"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Up so early, feel so bright
I didn't get much sleep last night
A freight train rattled through my head
Whistle blowing', love is dead
Is dead
Heart attacked by fear and doubt
Won't be long 'til the truth comes out
First impressions never lie
Lover's bonds they hold so fast
Restless future burnin' bright
The past is holdin' on so tight
I never heard the warnin' bell
And I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
Welcome swallows dip and swing
Take their cue from the slightest thing
Rollin' fog into my room
Why'd you give up on me so soon?
So soon
Restless future burnin' bright
The past is holding on so tight
I never heard the warnin' bell
And I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
Why'd you give up on me so soon?
Why'd you give up on me so soon?
I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
I didn't get much sleep last night
A freight train rattled through my head
Whistle blowing', love is dead
Is dead
Heart attacked by fear and doubt
Won't be long 'til the truth comes out
First impressions never lie
Lover's bonds they hold so fast
Restless future burnin' bright
The past is holdin' on so tight
I never heard the warnin' bell
And I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
Welcome swallows dip and swing
Take their cue from the slightest thing
Rollin' fog into my room
Why'd you give up on me so soon?
So soon
Restless future burnin' bright
The past is holding on so tight
I never heard the warnin' bell
And I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well
Why'd you give up on me so soon?
Why'd you give up on me so soon?
I just want to wish you well
I just want to wish you well

haha yer, I'm surprised no-one else has commented either.
Me thinks this song is about a girl (aren't most..? j/k)
Maybe Bernard was going through an uncertain time, and all things came to a head at the same time ( a breakup, career taking a new and uncertain path, poss. when he decided to go solo) and the song is about the girl bailing just when he needed the support. Perhaps it was a bad breakup, and she didn't want to have anything to do with Bernard, but he still wants to be freinds, or something.... there is a definite trace of lingering feelings ("Lovers' bonds they hold so fast" and the "I just want to wish you well" could allude to still having feelings for someone)
Just some thoughts. It is a very beautiful song, and for me it means still having feelings for an ex-lover that doesn't want anything to do with you.
@Pollux a reply 18 years later, absurd🤣
I found your thoughts on the song meaning reasonable, the line -Welcome SWALLOWS DIP AND SWING was what brought me to this page, Swallows represent love and companionship
On Bernard’s song “Songbird” he says
SONGBIRD you got tales to tell , how many times can you describe your living hell?
The SWEEPING GESTURE creates a fuss.

The reference of a chatty bird in both songs supports what you suggested about a girl a partner maybe it was a pet name for her. Anyhows Happy new brother-rock on
