The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Turning away for the last time,
Turning away for the last time,
so you say its the last time,
you know that weve been writing,
our names into the sky so long,
and ive been wasting my breath on,
such little things when i think,
of what could be.
common sense awakens slowly,
the water (and the water) is rising,
love alone will find a way,
but we lost it (we lost it).
now ive given up wouldnt you,
we gave it time but you took over,
you'd say we wasted our time,
i gave you mine,
you left me nothing (you left me nothing)
it's the last time...
since you left home seems further,
away than when you were here,
and you see it now what could be,
but you chose to forget it so forget it (so forget it).
common sense awakens slowly,
the water (and the water) is rising,
love alone will find a way,
but we lost it (we lost it).
now ive given up wouldnt you,
we gave it time but you took over,
youd say we wasted our time,
i gave you mine,
you left me nothing (nothing, nothing, nothing...)
time has wasted love has faded,
id like to say im well these days,
and time alone is well enough,
but i cant forget when,
i miss this much.
now ive given up wouldnt you,
we gave it time but you took over,
youd say we wasted our time,
i gave you mine,
you left me nothing.
