You
Why do they always send the poor?

Barbarisms by Barbaras
With pointed heels
Victorious Victorias kneel
For brand new spanking deals
Marching forward, hypocritic
And hypnotic computers
You depend on our protection
Yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, ooh
Everybody's going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancin' in the desert
Blowin' up the sunshine

Kneeling roses disappearing
Into Moses' dry mouth
Breaking into Fort Knox
Stealing our intentions
Hangers sitting, dripped in oil
Crying, "freedom"
Handed to obsoletion
Still you feed us lies from the tablecloth

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, ooh
Everybody's going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancin' in the desert
Blowing up the sunshine
Everybody's going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancin' in the desert
Blowin' up the sunshine

Blast off, it's party time
And we don't live in a fascist nation
Blast off, it's party time
And where the fuck are you?

Where the fuck are you?
Where the fuck are you?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?

Kneeling roses disappearing
Into Moses' dry mouth
Breaking into Fort Knox
Stealing our intentions
Hangers sitting dripped in oil
Crying, "freedom"
Handed to obsoletion
Still you feed us lies from the tablecloth

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, ooh
Everybody's going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancin' in the desert
Blowing up the sunshine
Everybody's going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancin' in the desert
Blowin' up the sun

Where the fuck are you?
Where the fuck are you?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?

Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
They always send the poor
They always send the poor

Wow...where do you start with this one? Hmmm. Let's start with "why do they always send the poor?" since the band keeps repeating it like they've actually figured something out. First...the poor aren't sent, they volunteer. The question is "why do they always volunteer?". The answer is because they get a free education that many of them wouldn't have otherwise, they also learn qualities such as respect, leadership and responsibility that many, especially those from the ghetto, need. I have seen the military change people around from worthless whiners to strong people with character. They also learn skills in the military and see the world and contrary to Soad's apparent beliefs, most come back in one piece. Many also do it for their country. It's very ironic to me that the vast majority of the people volunteering for the military and putting their lives on the line believe in what they're doing while whiny west coast bands like soad are doing the bitching from their mansions. Newsflash: Soad you are rich. The poor go because whiny Hollywood rich types like you would never do it! What's more, it's because of your people that we are there...not because of the rich, Bush, Republicans or anyone else.

What's next. Hangers sitting dripped in oil. Soad this war isn't about oil despite all of the delusional, unprovable, conspiracies that Kerry, Moore and all of the other wack jobs have mind f***** you with just to get votes and regain power. We were attacked so we went into Afghanistan to bitch slap the government that supported Osama. It wasn't about oil, it wasn't about religion, it was about justice. If it were about anything else we would have done it long before now. Since we were over there we decided we might as well take care of Sadam as well. If we wanted oil we would have went into Iraq when they attacked their neighbor and our ally. Saddam signed an agreement and he broke it. Saddam paid off people to bomb innocent people in Israel, Saddam shot at our planes, Saddam killed thousands of his own people, he attacked his neighbor, he killed those in his country that disagreed with him and at some point everyone agreed that he had WMDs which he either sold, or disposed of in such a way that the UN could not verify that he disposed of them (that would have been almost an unbelievably stupid thing to do). He was an unstable force in an already unstable region and when everyone else in the world came out against what happened on 9/11 he basically said "that's what you get". The president gave him the opportunity to step down peacefully and he refused. Not one shot needed to be fired. This is all Saddam's fault and it is NOT about oil. If it was our gas prices would be a lot lower now. The only reason we protect the oil facilities in Iraq is because it's the only thing of value there and it needs to be protected so it can be used to rebuild and support the country. It's not like all the sand over there is worth very much.

How about the line "we don't live in a facist nation". Hmmmm. Is it just me or do people throw that term and the term Nazi around way too much. If you think that Bush is a facist or a nazi you may need to try watching the Discovery or History channel for once. Watch the specials on Germany during WW2 as thousands of bodies are pushed into mass graves with bulldozers and learn what fascism and nazi's really are. Hey Soad, you think this is a fascist nation? It obviously isn't. If it were you'd be dead. I would love to hop in a time machine, put Soad in Iraq, or WW2 Germany and generate some anti Saddam or anti Hitler lyrics for them and see how long they lived. Go ahead Soad, keep pissing all over the people and the government of this nation. Fortunately for you that freedom is granted to you because WE fought for it.

Having said all that the music behind the "dancing in the desert" part is very catchy.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
