Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.

best shai hulud song yet (that's saying something). The effects of a failed/failing world on an idealistic heart and trying to persevere.
Not just the best Shai Hulud have done, but possibly my favourite song ever. It's a perfect portrait of how the apathy, callousness, cruelty and greed of mankind can completely destroy what an idealistic person used to be, and leave nothing but someone who retaliates at; and resists humanity.
When I listen to this song I cry 60% of the time. The way the riffs go so perfectly with the emotion in the lyrics is really something to marvel at.

The whole song gives me chills, but that line makes me shiver. I sense a bit of optimism in this song, as the writer continues to struggle to live his life even amongst the negative feedback of others. A truly uplifting song for me.
I think the choice of demons is brilliant. They started out as loyal angels, servants of God, but they were turned by, of all things, the appeal of humanity. Of course, in the song the narrator is just a person whose optimism and hope for the world has been run under by the crappiness of people in general. But when he says "I am not simply strong. I may very well be the strongest man that ever lived", it just kicks me in the heart. It'd be too easy for a cynic to say that if the worst you have to deal with is stupid idiots, you've got it posh. The fact of the matter is, the world's just fine. The people living in it are responsible for both nearly all the problems with it and a good chunk of what goes right in it, too. We need each other so much, even when it's tempting to draw away and hide.
