She can walk out anytime anytime she wants to walk out that's fine
She can walk out anytime anytime she feels that life has passed her
by
And when I start my new life I won't touch the ground
I'm gonna try hard this time not to touch the ground.
He can walk out anytime anytime he wants to walk out that's fine
He can walk out anytime across the sand into the sea into the
brine
And when I start my new life I won't touch the ground,
I'm gonna try hard this time not to touch the ground.
So we sold the car and quit the job
and shook some hands and wiped the make-up right off,
And we said our good-byes to the bank
left Seven Sisters for a room in a seaside shack,
And when I start my new life I won't touch the ground,
I'm gonna try hard this time not to touch the grounds
...it's by the sea we'll breed
...into the sea we'll bleed...

Suicide??? How can anyone see "suicide" in this song...? :-0 It's a very beautiful song whose simple meaning is about letting go of all the chains in everyday life, job-bank-7sisters, breaking free and live a simpler, possibly happier life. A choice many of us toy with, now and again, but very few have the actual courage to do... So I think that the 2 characters in the song sort of redeem us all, in a way...

it is an optomistic song, despite its sombre feel. the lyrics are about not sinking to a depression after a relationship ended. its also about sacrifice..."So we sold the car and quit the job And shook some hands and wiped the make-up right off, And we said our good-byes to the bank Left Seven Sisters for a room in a seaside shack"

this is about making sacrifices for a better future, and sometimes in life, you have to lose things that you dont really need in order to appreciate the simpler things in life. its one of my all time favourite songs and the song that truly got me interested in suede as a band when i saw them perform it on jools holland show by chance.

    Memory

I can relate to this beautiful song. I gave up my job from the urban rat race to live by the sea. I'm now a surfer and live a much more chilled lifestyle earning less but enjoying life to the full.

I don't see it as a threat. I see it as wonderful optimism.

I think it is about realizing you don't want to lead the sort of life you have been leading anymore, the "ground" being all of the profane things considered the most worthy in modern times. When you feel like being spoiled by them you look for a clean place or clear state of mind, that being the sea. Also, the suicide motive. Feels like someone is struggling about which way to take out of the ugly world they are in.

"and when i start my new life i won't touch the ground" this sounds like a threat, a cryptic way of saying that the they never want to be heard from again.

Just discovered this song. It makes me want to cry, it's so lovely. I agree it's sort of wistfully optimistic. It makes me depressed, though, because it's another wonderful Suede song that I'll probably never see live.

I'm a lot more pessimistic than you guys.

"He can walk out anytime, Anytime he wants to walk out, that's fine, He can walk out anytime, Across the sand, into the sea, into the brine"

To me, this means he leaves his known life to a life in which he doesn't have any responsibilities, he can enjoy himself, and when he wants to die, he'll have the sea right next to him. He could have children and make a new life right by the sea, trying to keep dreaming, or he could kill himself if he "touches the ground".

He/she can commit suicide if they want, by walking into the sea In their afterlife(new life) they won't touch the ground again (coz they will be under the sea)

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
