You're cynical and beautiful
You always make a scene
You're monochrome delirious
You're nothing that you seem
I'm drownin' in your vanity
Your laugh is your disease
You're dirty and you're sweet
You know you're everything to me

Everything you are
Falls from the sky like a star
Everything you are
Whatever ever you are

I wanna kick at the machine
That made you piss away you dreams
Tear down your defenses
'Til there's nothing there but me
You're angry when you're beautiful
Your love is such a tease
I'm drowning in your dizzy noise
I wanna feel you scream

Everything you are
Falls from the sky like a star
Everything you are
Whatever ever you are

Everything you are
Falls from the sky like a star
Everything you are
Whatever ever you are

Everything you are
Whatever ever you are
Whatever ever you are
Whatever ever you are

I love the Goo Goo Dolls' lyrics. This is a great song... it's about a girl who's a world of contradictions to this guy, but he loves her anyway. She's pretty fickle, and maybe toys with his emotions at times.

I really like the second verse, for some reason: "I wanna kick at the machine That made you piss away your dreams And tear down your defenses Till there's nothing there but me You're angry when you're beautiful Your love is such a tease I'm drowning in your dizzy noise I wanna feel you scream" ... Don't really know what to make of that. I guess she's been hurt by someone before, and it's maybe messed up everything she had planned. The "tear down your defenses 'til there's nothing left but me" line is interesting... sinister, even. He wants to have power over her, as she probably already has over him.

"You're cynical and beautiful You always make a scene You're monochrome delirious You're nothing that you seem "I feel this means that her looks contradict her insides, she is so beautiful on the exterior but totally chaotic on the interior....I think he loves this girl despite her deceptive ways......

I also feel that he is trying to lead her in the right direction and get her through life and hates the fact that something or someone that has this power over her and made her basically kill all of her dreams... so he wants to put a stop to this and make her see that he is what is right and his influence is the one she should follow.... I think he still loves her.... and wants her....

to sweetestsiren- what the line " ... tear down your defenses til there's nothing there but me ..." to me, means that the girl he's talking to in the song puts up false defenses around her by isolating herself from others, not letting them into her heart, so that she doesn't get hurt. he wants her to let go of her fears and realize that he's standing there, ready to be the right kind of shield from pain for her.

This is another great Goo Goo Dolls song. I think the best part of this song is the chorus, although I'm not quite sure what it means...I think i would put this as third best song by them after "Iris" and "Here is gone"... GOO GOO DOLLS RULE!

All in all, to me it means he hates to love her and loves to hate her.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
