"I Will Always Love You" as written by Gonul Ozcarkci, Linet ...
If I should stay,
I would only be in your way,
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you each step of the way.
And I will always love you;
I will always love you.

Bittersweet memories --
That’s all I am taking with me.
Goodbye. Please, don't cry;
We both know that I'm not what you need.
And I will always love you;
I will always love you.

I hope life treats you kind,
And I hope you ... you have all that you ever dreamed of,
And I wish you joy and happiness,
But above all this, I wish you love;
And I will always love you;
I will always love you;
I will always love you.

    General CommentThis is written from the point of view of someone who's capable of genuine love. She realizes that she is not the best fit for her lover, and makes a sacrifice for his happiness. This kind of transcendental love is very rare.

    General CommentThis is probably Dolly's best song ever.

    The story I'd heard is that she wrote it as a farewell to Porter Wagoner, but when I tried to verify that information, I found that "I Will Always Love You" was released in February, 1974, while Porter and Dolly released an album in August, 1974, and another in August, 1975. So, I doubt that Dolly addressed the song to Porter since it was released just before the pinnacle of their joint career.

    One thing is for sure: Dolly Parton's rendition of "I Will Always Love You" is the best there has ever been.

    General CommentI don't know about those albums you mention, but my guess would be that they were recorded before this one and only released later. This song was on the album Jolene, which was her first solo after officially leaving Porter's show, so I think it's still likely addressed to him.

    And I agree, this is easily better than all subsequent versions.
