Death Cab for Cutie – The New Year Lyrics 19 years ago
yeah, I'd like to pick up specifically on the lyrics wombatcombat mentioned. I don't know what the whole song is about but this particular part rings true to me in the sense that it feels like the apprehension many of us feel in growing up.

in saying 'i wish the world could be flat like the old days' he words it in such a way as to sound childishly naive - as if he actually thinks the world used to be flat. And if you think about it, that mentality actually makes a lot of sense. To look around you the world does seem more or less flat, and almost, to suggest that the world is round doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

In this respect, what Ben seems to be saying here, as far as I'm concerned, is that when you're a child you see things very simply, and to a child the way things appear to be is the way they actually are. As we grow older we discover that things aren't always as simple as we may think, or wish, they were. We start having to look for double meanings in the things people say and do and it seems to me that Ben is saying he yearns for a time when he didn't have to second guess everyone in that way.

Its that interpretation that i connect with because i have similar feelings the older i get and the more i learn. It seems to me that the 'wiser' we get, the more we learn not to trust.

To this end, the New Year may be talking about the symbolic nature of knowing you're one year older and yet, still believing that to live with the simple naivity you had when you were a child would actually be a better way to live.

Finally, if you listen to the album on repeat the sound at the very end of A Lack Of Color (last song) and the sound at the very beginning of The New Year are the same which, i think, symbolises the cyclical nature of things which, of course, ties in beautifully with the name of this song.

Ben Folds – Give Judy My Notice Lyrics 19 years ago
have you all heard the acoustic release on 'Speed Graphic Ep' or are you talking about the full-band version on 'Songs for Silverman'? It's just that i heard the original Ben-only version first and was moved to tears, but hearing the full band version on '...Silverman' ruined it for me. I just think its so cheesy! I'd be interested to hear whether people who have heard both versions agree or disagree with me?

Cranes – Bewildered Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow. I just heard Driving in the Sun by the Cranes last night for the first time and thought i would look them up on here. They seem like an awesome band with great lyrics. I especially like the lyrics to this one. Thanks to lauramars for sticking them on. Have also (hopefully) added Driving in the Sun lyrics. Now all i have to do is find some of their music. mmm. delicious.

Onelinedrawing – Livin' Small Lyrics 20 years ago
" I don't know if I've seen a million faces
I'm not sure if I've rocked them all
All i know is I've met a lot of people
Filled a lot of spaces
Learned to jump and learned to take a fall
And if that's not livin' large, then I'm happy livin' small"

Genius. A song that is completely at peace with itself. Often the ones who shout the loudest are the ones who are secretly unhappy in themselves. This song illustrates the point perfectly.

Jonah's songs really don't need any explaination, not least of all because they often mean different and very personal things to everyone who listens to it, but Jonah has really tapped into something that is so often overlooked as a talent nowadays and that is pure simple honesty.

So often simplicity is the thing that describes the complexities of the human heart the best.

Onelinedrawing – Smile Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's a testiment to the man's talent and observational / writing skills that although jonah can write songs that will reduce me to tears for their honesty about sad issues, particularly break-ups (Yr Letter, Perfect Pair etc.), when he writes a happy song, it also shows the same amount of clearly defined emotional awareness and transcription as one of the sad songs. It's impossible not to smile when you hear this song.

Um, i think the 'fun break-up song' comment from the sketchy Ep is Jonah being sarcastic!

Something Corporate – Straw Dog Lyrics 20 years ago
It is touched upon above, but a 'Straw Dog' is from Taoist Philosophy / Religion, in which these dogs made of straw are made, used as an object of worship for a day or two and then, as mentioned above, thrown away and actually violently ruined. This was all explained above, the point i am trying to make is that i think the song is representing how the author feels after a relationship. He feels as though he has been the object of affection for a little while, while he was useful, but now has been violently rejected because the object of his love, presumably 'Jessica' wants to 'fly away'.

Cap'n Jazz – Precious Lyrics 21 years ago
i think i'm right in saying that towards the end of this song the guitar player plays the 5/4 time signature part that he plays at thge beginning while the drummer plays a 4/4 time signature. Am i Right? if so, it's bloody genius!!

Radiohead – Like Spinning Plates Lyrics 21 years ago
I like that last idea from IndieRockLance. I never thought about it like that before but if you take that interpretation then you can see where the 'You throw me to the lions' line comes from as wasn't it the romans who used to put Christians in an arena with lions for entertainment.

Radiohead – Sail to the Moon. (Brush the Cobwebs Out of the Sky.) Lyrics 21 years ago
yea, just to elaborate on the point made by 'nobody', the song is, in my opinion, definately about his son, Noah and the fact that they will try and teach him 'right from wrong' while he's young so that they can look after him, but then, as Thom and his partner grow old Noah will look after them, hence, 'building them and ark and sailing them to the moon.'

Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics 21 years ago
i just really love the way the song drifts into confusion and dissonance with the strings playing those strange notes and Thom brings the song out of the darkness with that long sustained beautiful note. Listen to it and you'll see where i mean.

Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics 21 years ago
After having read your interpretations i was set thinking. Mainly on the "two colours in my head" line. Because black and white are shades and not colours i would suggest maybe it is this: wehen you see a 3D film you have to wear those weird glasses to see the 3D part right? The glasses have one blue side and one red side. Now, i have no idea why the glasses work but maybe the "two colours" refers to the red and blue, implying that Thom sees the world in 3D where so many people can't. Maybe he's been looking in 3D and seeing the depth behind the surface and he doesn't like it, hence the sucking on a lemon, and so maybe the title is somewhat ironic and everything isn't in it's right place at all? After all, does it sound like Radiohead to be optimistic?

Radiohead – Pyramid Song Lyrics 21 years ago
In response to Slugsinthefields question about why the song is called Pyramid Song, i'd like to attempt two possible explanations and hear some of your views. Firstly and most obviously perhaps because, i am told, the pyramid shape was considered by the Egyptians as the symbol of eternal life (hence why they buried their dead in them), secondly, and slightly obscurely, i was working out the time signature of the song and it feels to me as if it is 1 bar of 6/8 ollowed by one bar of 4/8 followed by two bars of 6/8 followed by one bar of 4/8 and then another bar of 6/8, (repeating throughout the song) hence arranged like so: 6,4,6,6,4,6 which, you will find is symetrical, much like the sides of a pyramid. Any takers?

P.O.D. – Youth Of The Nation Lyrics 22 years ago
ok, time for a contraversial opinion. I don not wish to condone the tradgedies that have occured in the US bt come on, those things dnt happen on a regular basis. Just like every death from ecstacy, the frequency of these occurances is very low, however, those that do occur are so well publisised that people get a biased opinion. Why are parents the object of your hatred. Obviously, there are always exceptional cases where parents are neglectful or just fucking nasty, bt everyone knows that as a teenager, being angry / upset / misunderstood is "cool", even if no-one is willing to say it. Kids make up things to be angry about or they exagerate for effect. It's ok cos it's part of growing up and develloping a sense of self/ individuality. However, no one ever gives the other side of the argument, and it needs to be heard.

Tool – Faaip de Oiad Lyrics 22 years ago
Jesus, I bought this album yesterday and decided to listen to it the whole way through before i went to bed.

the rest of the album passed and i sat, fascinated by the qualuty of the musicianship, then, however this track came on.

as i lay there on my bed, in the dark, at 1 o clock in the morning i swear i nearly shat myself!
Not only are the lyrics fuckin freaky but the musical accompaniment only serves to amplify the terror i was feeling!

Don't ever listen to this before going to sleep as it will give u nightmares- no doubt about it!

Slipknot – People = Shit Lyrics 22 years ago
Shite lyrics but quite simply the best double bass drumming i've ever heard. Joey concentrates not on the speed of the peddling, but on technique, and the synchopated quality of the drumming in the verse is incomparable.

Lacuna Coil – Cold Heritage Lyrics 22 years ago
I cant believe no-ones commented on Lacuna Coil. They are a fantastic band but unfortunately it doesnt look like they'll ever get the recognition they deserve simply because they're gothic and because too many people concentrate on Christina Scabbia rather than the band. Oh well. I decided to add this comment for this song because it's my favourite on the album, but the comment; "great song" could be added to any of them. This is simply a wonderful song to kiss a loved one to.

Radiohead – Lurgee Lyrics 22 years ago
The gretaest thing about this song is that although the lyrics are simple, they are incredibly affective. I often feel that people on this service analyse the lyrics too much, but with this song the meaning is very obvious.
Thom Yorke never trys to hide his emotions in his songs and i think his repetition of the phrase, "it's getting better" shows that it's not getting better at all, and that in fact, he loves her so much, he cant live without her. Listen to this song after you break up from a relationship and the sheer simplicity, overwhelming heartache (in both the lyrics and the guitar) and the immense beauty will move you to tears.

Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics 22 years ago
I just like the lyric, "there are many things that i would like to say to you, but i don't know how." Isn't that the point of this web-site, to look at the lyrics, not to argue about which is less shite, the Beatles or Oasis.

Glassjaw – Secret Song Lyrics 22 years ago
I think the reason this song means so much to me is bcos, despite everything else Daryl says about this girl on the album, the lyrics here show that every emotion expressed is based around his love for her. He hates her for leaving him bcos he still loves her so much. Thats definately something i can relate to.
