Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics 19 years ago
I haven't seen Life as a House yet (it's certainly on my list now), but this song should've been on the soundtrack for Mulholland Dr. It fits the movie oh so perfectly.

The meltdown at the end is really touching, I agree.

Radiohead – Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was Lyrics 19 years ago
About the bubbles...

I think Thom's talking about us. The millions of people listening to the song, he's bursting all our protective bubbles by making us realize that as much as we might wish it, none of us is bulletproof. I don't know about you guys, but that sweet 'ooooooooooof' breaks thru my armor everytime.

Radiohead – Let Down Lyrics 19 years ago
You know when you're sitting around with friends (especially not-so-close acquaintances, perhaps fellow employees) and you're "hanging out" but have nothing to do? And eventually you decide "let's get hammered" because that's all you have to look forward to after your 9 to 5?

This song describes that disappointment quite well.

The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics 19 years ago
What does anyone think of the "mother's breaking heart taking over" line? I think that's the best line of the whole song.

When someone's son/daughter is killed, you've killed a part of that person. So the "breaking heart takes over," and the mother advocates violence because she wants revenge, but that will only continue the cycle of violence and death, and not really help anyone.

P.S. grieving violent mothers are scary.

I,....would NOT recommend listenin' to this song, before you dump someone..

The part in the middle, when she's going "ooohh...oohh, ohoa....whoa...oo...oh....oooh"...sounds really sexual, doesn't it? Maybe she's reenacting the cherry-popping scene with Uncle Joey!

Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics 19 years ago
Don't know if this has been mentioned already, but this song makes me think OCD.

If anyone's seen The Aviator or just knows the Howard Hughes story, this kind of reminds me of him. He repeated phrases uncontrollably sometimes.

"What was that you tried to say?"
OCDers have a hard time explaining their paranoid, completely irrational feelings. Just an idea.

Repetition = predictability = conformity = safety = the death of individuality, uniqueness, fun (NOT the hyper-controlled cookie-cutter variety), spontaneity, intrigue, wonder, awe, all that good stuff.

We're living in one tight-assed OCD society, citizens

Radiohead – Planet Telex Lyrics 19 years ago
It certainly isn't overly joyous.

Since it was supposed to be "Xerox" I think of a bunch of copies that aren't as good as the original.

They're all malfunctional (broken). They're so far removed from what they came from...but they can't forget it either. Because that's who they are.

An apt statement for our time.

Radiohead – Treefingers Lyrics 19 years ago
definitely have to see it in context of the album, and what it's doing where it is.

if How to Disappear Completely is a written set of instructions on complete introversion and isolation from the world, this is the unwritten version.

the title makes me think of branches growing forward slowly when i hear the song.

optimistic follows this, and it's like a snap back to the real world...and back to real songs.

the breakdown part in the middle is really cool.

there aren't any lyrics during that part.

the silence is powerful however.

Radiohead – Morning Bell Lyrics 19 years ago
Love Radiohead. But this song just irritates me.
Then again I used to hate "Bones" and now it's one of my favorites.

If this song is as violent as Thom claims, I applaud the band for making the most ironic musical statement I've ever heard.

Radiohead – Fitter Happier Lyrics 19 years ago
I like how the baby goes from "smiling in backseat" to "strapped in backseat."

The price of the safety technology can grant us is our freedom to be human. It saves us at the same time it straps us down.

This track is a mirror image of "Airbag."

P.S. greenplastic is a great site, plenty of song info (not much on Hail to the Thief, however, what's up with that?)

Radiohead – Airbag Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the song that got me into Radiohead.

The music is so perfect for the feeling Thom is trying to get across. The chorus especially is full of awe and reverence, in a way.

One part that doesn't seem to click for me is the "neon sign, scrolling up and down" bit. Scrolling makes me think of a computer, but that's all I got. Anyone want to help?

The album is great because it doesn't just put down technology. It looks at it from different angles. "Airbag" shows that it can protect us, because there is some scary shit that can happen out there (see "Climbing Up the Walls").

Radiohead – Climbing Up the Walls Lyrics 19 years ago
I heard that Thom said the song was about "the unthinkable. literally, skull-crushing." If you consider the Care in the Community story (letting potentially dangerous mental patients out into the real world), these lyrics play with words brilliantly.

"open up your skull" seems to be a play on "open up your mind," which I would think would be a motto of the Care in the Community program. By opening their minds and accepting the patients into society, people are also inviting the literal opening of their fucking skulls.

The "fifteen blows" lines also seem to blur the line between metaphor and physical reality. The fear of the literal blows to the head results in "blows to the mind" or paranoia.

The scream at the end is mind-blowing in itself. Absolute perfection.

Pearl Jam – Bushleaguer Lyrics 19 years ago
don't forget that bush is a product of the american system. the government is still a representative democracy, i.e. it's our fucking fault. an overwhelming majority of incumbent congressmen are reelected because people don't give a shit. half of the eligible voters couldn't inconvenience themselves on election day. if the average american joe had half the political enthusiasm of vedder, this song probably wouldn't exist.

that said, i like the aristocrat choir bit, brings some amusing images to mind

Fleaaaaa, I really loved Binaural, (I think it tops Yield, actually), & Riot Act was a big disappointment for me. It has its moments, but some of the stuff sounds kind of tired to me. Then again, the songs are pretty cool live..maybe I just didn't like the recording style? eh, how much difference does it make

submissions
Pearl Jam – Smile Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that stuff was just drawn on the note Ed found..it's in the liner notes for the song. The words aren't written, but there are 3 crooked ass hearts & a bunch of swirls.

Pearl Jam – Light Years Lyrics 20 years ago
The whole address to the fans approach made the song more moving to me than thinking of it as about a death..It really shows that Ed is a true showman & entertainer, and his relationship with his fans is important to him, even if it's rocky (see "Corduroy"..). Beautiful song, great little instrumental bridge.

Pearl Jam – Stupid Mop Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's just a great way to end Vitalogy (arguably the best PJ album). The rest of the album is so dark, & by "Immortality" Ed is blatantly wondering about suicide..this song just provides a view of insanity from a real mentally ill person..I think Ed was going slightly nuts when this album was being recorded, maybe he needed something to relate to..or something to assure him that there's always someone crazier..jack irons's drumming is cool

Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution Lyrics 20 years ago
Uh, shit's gonna go to fire. Heh. The she-devil in the video is hott. Esp. when her face becomes a demonic skull. "Herd behavior," hahaha. Great. I personally enjoy when he changes it to "On the loose, I'm a fuck..". Todd McFarlane made the best music video I've ever seen for this song, if you haven't seen it, put it on your list of things to do.

Pearl Jam – Habit Lyrics 20 years ago
You could take this song very generally and apply to any kind of habit, i.e. any mindless routine that someone goes through just because it's been imprinted in the animal part of his/her brain..Just any stupid thing that you do without thinking about, from biting your nails to booting H. "It's not your way" because you're just going through the motions & not actually thinking about what you're doing..you're like a slave to your own brain.

Pearl Jam – Footsteps Lyrics 20 years ago
"and if there's something you'd like to do, just let me continue to blame you." it's like a brief moment of sanity in the song, when the speaker realizes that he's blaming "you" for his actions, when in fact there really was no real reason at all. for that small part of the song, he's acknowledging his own insanity. groovy.

'Clip-on world' is a great phrase to sum up the idea of the entire song. Fake, pre-packaged..just handed to him. And 'dirt turned to sand'..what a way to describe growing up..just being broken into smaller and smaller pieces..great stuff here, writer's block my ass

Pearl Jam – I Got Shit (I Got Id) Lyrics 20 years ago
I thought the loud lines were "and i fight back in my mind/never lets me be right/i got memories, i got shit/so much it don't show"...then "and i stay in bed/oh in a little while, i'll see you/if just once, i could feel love/ah stare back at me, yeah..". Yeah..whatever.

There's a passive-aggressive, manic-depressive, anti-social psychopath in us all, and this song fucking proves it

Might not be true, but I heard Ed just found a note somewhere with this stuff written on it and used it for lyrics..kinda like how jeff overheard someone talking about guns and jotted down "glorified g." Unless that's not true either. Heh, interpreting is fun.

Pearl Jam – Insignificance Lyrics 20 years ago
This song just makes me want to boogie on down to the voting booth.. Lyrics are really cool. Ed's little solo in the bridge is f*ckin kickass, makes my hair raise every time. Ah, so "feel like resonance of distance" could mean that the workers feel the effects of their work (making bombs) "resonating" in a distant land (Iraq for example)..And the "iron" used to make the war machines really 'lies' in their 'blood', meaning it's their own will (or lack of it) that's causing the destruction...gotta love this song.

Pearl Jam – Tremor Christ Lyrics 20 years ago
Cherub Rock, I'm with you on this one. In the bridge it's like he's screaming at people trapped in a religious stupor to wake the f*ck up and stop 'believing in lies to get by.'

I love these comments; serious Tool fans are such intelligent people..the insights are really helpful, especially when there is so much to read into in every Tool tune. To add some chump change to the mix, I really like the reference in the song to "your scarlet letterman", which I think of as a reference to THE SCARLET LETTER, one of my favorite novels.."your scarlet letter-man" is the person you've chosen to hold a grudge to--you've branded them with a scarlet letter that they'll never be able to remove, at least in your eyes..long live Maynard.

PJ vs. the media...I think this one is Eddie offering a compromise to the media, to "make amends"..."we" is PJ; they are young, they'll find their place...however, Ed still wants the media to back off ("outta my FUCKIN' FACE")

submissions
Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Lyrics 22 years ago
love this one...the woman is trapped behind her small-town life...routine after routine makes her easily forget old friends and old feelings..."I just want to scream, 'Hello'": she wants to scream, but she won't...the town dictates her actions and controls her life...I always thought that every song on Vs. had to do with Eddie's backlash against the intrusion of the media on the band, and even this song can work on that level...the frustration of being held back from those you care about, all the memories you can lose touch with once you get mindfucked by the biz...

submissions
Pearl Jam – Blood Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree, but I think it's really ironic the way that Eddie thought that the biz was draining his creative lifeblood, yet his hatred toward them created this ass-kicking album...this is one throttling good song.

I miss Dave! he was my favorite PJ drummer...this album shows off his skill really well, especially this song...he's so tribal and raw and cool...hmm, so about the lyrics...I don't think many rock bands would attempt to seriously approach racism as a topic for a song, props to Ed and the gang.

yeah, the music definitely fits the lyrics...especially the end, which really gets me into that 'bustin loose' vibe...it's freedom, baby...I see the connection to Daughter too, that's pretty cool, nice little storyline, sort of...I wonder if Go fits in there somewhere...

Pearl Jam – Daughter Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with PJ10...but...no one should tell anyone what a song is 'really' about...lyrics should be able to be interpreted on an individual basis...no one has the right to define anything, and everyone has a right to their own opinion: no one is 'wrong'...the purpose of this site is just to convey ideas.
