The Smiths – That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore Lyrics 6 years ago
The bit about "die with a smile" might as well be about suicide. The common view is that suicide happens while extremely sad. It ain't always necessarily so, there might be a strive for the REST in PEACE thing, and the happiness of that thought.

The Vaselines – Son Of A Gun Lyrics 6 years ago
I think the interpretations about the song being about sex and love are probably right. Personally I like to listen to this song interpreted as a making babies song where the sex has actually ended up to a situation where a baby has been conceived, born and is now a toddler turning, swinging, going round, playing in the bedroom. Seen like this it's an extremely joyful song, full of warmth and happiness, joy that one hopefully experiences with one's spouse while making babies, and then when one watches the priceless end result playing and growing. Probably it's just meant to be a song of wild sex, though :)

Mazzy Star – Blue Light Lyrics 7 years ago
This one is difficult but I want to point out a couple of associations and maybe someone else gets an idea to help along the way. In this old fairy tale

http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0562.html

blue light is an object that grants you your wishes, connects a wounded person dying alone, to life, the world and love of another person.

For some reason Louis Aragon's poem Elsa's Eyes also comes to my mind, with its blue eyes and ocean and the blue colour that is associated with Virgin Mary.

Personally this song reminds me of a girl I once knew who shot herself. She was trying to cope with her problems with drugs and alcohol, and the blue light in railway stations often brings this song and her to my mind.

New Order – Truth Lyrics 7 years ago
"I know they like what they see"/"I hope they like what they see" might be just as pessimistic as the rest of the song. It might be that the line is about people seeing the suffering of the singer and liking it, a bit like in Joy Division's Atrocity Exhibition or the ancient Romans enjoying seeing gladiators getting killed.

Porno For Pyros – Porpoise Head Lyrics 7 years ago
Cottons for swabbing for filtering the heroin, two bags of it for two lovers. Maybe Farrell and co thought this song is about ultimately blissful love, having sex in seventh heaven. Personally I don't see it this way, though. To me this song is about being incapble of loving someone without something to tone down the terror of the being vulnerable. In an odd way this song is akin to the Stooges' Now I wanna be your dog, where the terror of being loved is toned down by contempt and domination, fueled by amphetamines and aggression.

HIM – Wings of a Butterfly Lyrics 7 years ago
This is one of those "Live fast, die while young" songs. A butterfly only lives a few days as a beautiful butterfly, most of its life it spends as uglier life forms. It develops the butterfly stage to find a mate and dies soon after mating. The song looks at life and love as something that can't last. Die while still happy, young and beautiful, don't wait until you're old, ugly and lonely. A very pessimistic song with no hope and the only positive thing in it is the capability to love, despite all the hurt and cynicism.
