He's Scottish (hence the, "If you come back to America, just hit me up" line) and has suffered from depression for many years; Lana's song Black Beauty talks more about that which is why the lines "You said to a friend that you wish you were doing better" and "You've got the blues, changing like the weather, that's so like you" make sense, and it's known that Lana didn't exactly break up with him in the best way ("I shouldn't have done it" line makes sense here). |

Barrie didn't want the relationship to end and didn't even know about the breakup until he heard it from someone else. Regardless, they both deeply loved one another and I think she had a really hard time, as did he, with the split. |

Call me crazy, but to me, this sounds like Lana is singing to herself. Old Lana, Lizzy Grant, singing to new Lana, after she's found fame.
She's basically telling herself "Why are you doing this? Why are you working so hard? Is it even worth it? Is this all really what you want?" She's telling her she could return to the freedom she once had, and that a part of her still longs for, and she could end everything now and be done with it. A "Swan Song" is basically the end, it's the final performance before the singer goes away.
Lana has admitted herself that she's had some struggles with fame and she's spoke a few times about retiring, though thankfully it hasn't happened. Sometimes I think deep down she wishes she could return to her old lifestyle and live carefree like she used too, and in a way she feels like she's missed out on a lot by choosing the path that she's chosen, which would explain the lyrics "And you've been gone so long you've missed everything."
This is such a beautiful song. One of my favorites off of Honeymoon, for sure. |

The lines that hit me the most are "I'm sorry that I fell in love tonight. I didn't mean to fall in love tonight." You can't control your feelings, and sometimes can't help who you fall for, and she's extremely vulnerable at this stage in the song. Hits home hard. |

I always thought this song was about a young girl, at least that's what the music video implies; possibly a teenage rebellion who doesn't get along with her parents and thinks she'll be better off on her own, so she runs away from home.
Flash forward. She's been on her own for awhile now and at first, things were great. She was staying with friends, doing her own thing, having fun, but that's all come to an end and now she's on the streets, desperate and clueless. Her hair is a mess, her clothes are raggedy, the only place she can find to clean herself up is a connivence store bathroom. No one picks her up when she hitch hikes and she calls her mother, out of desperation, but decides to just hang up. After all, this was the life she wanted.
In the end, she's running in the rain, nowhere to go and seeks shelter in an abandoned car. At the end, she's seen crying, walking off. I believe this song, along with many others, are about a guy Lana was romantically involved with many years named Kevin, or "K" for short. K was a great guy on the outside, always made her laugh, but turns out he was running an illegal company and got busted for it and was sent away to prison where he still remains to this day. This would also explain the songs "For K" and "For K Part 2" the reference to being in prison in this song, Born To Die, Blue Jeans, Million Dollar Man, as well as many of Lana's most famous songs. It has also been implied that "K" did not exist and was simply a work of fiction used for songs, but, if he indeed is real then he is in prison and Lana hasn't seen him in many years.

I think this song definitely could have more than one meaning, but I think it's about her being in love with a man whom she knows is no good for her, but she stays with him because he provides protection and is a safe haven for her, something she's never known or had before. When Lana was younger, she used to live in a trailer park, hence the lyric "You have to take me right now from this dark trailer park life now". She obviously hated living in the trailer park; she was most likely broke, maybe addicted to drugs, and needed an escape from that life and he was her escape. He'd pick her up on the black motorcycle that she mentions in the song and plans to marry him in a Las Vegas chapel. She'll wear a fifties styled dress for the wedding and she wears "his sparkle" (Engagement ring).
When she says "Let me put on a show for you, daddy" is the part that stumbles me. It COULD be sexual and could be totally opposite. It might be sexual because she might be 'putting on a show for him' as a thank you for getting her out of the dreaded life she was living. She didn't have money or nice things to give him as a token of her gratitude, so she gave him sex. Whatever the meaning is, this is a beautiful, beautiful song and Lana clearly favors it because it was first released in 2008 and she's re-recorded it several times. It's haunting, but at the same time, so gorgeous. |
