That Handsome Devil – Charlie's Inferno Lyrics 7 years ago
Charlie's Inferno is a modern-day reference to Dante's Inferno.

Long story short, Dante's inferno is about a man who must travel through all of the stages of hell to finally reach heaven. Dante creates an imaginative correspondence between a soul’s sin on Earth and the punishment he or she receives in Hell.

It's great how THD's lyrics depict the irony of each stage, just like in the book.
Fat people cooked alive with apples in their mouths.
"Attention whores and padded bras hanging from extension cords
Tortured with the products from their favorite catalogs."

The reason Charlie is sent to hell in this song is a bit ironic:
Charlie is selfish.
Yes, he is a kind and loving person who gives a lot, but in the end, it was only for himself to get into heaven.
If a man lives a life with no aspirations -aside from living a pure life, then he will burn in hell.

I love the way THD writes their songs.
Charlies Inferno, Party Mom and Invisible Dad, and Junkies in Love all have sad song lyrics, but the lyrics are placed on top of a happy major key. It's great.

The Who – Eminence Front Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is simply about how the rich hide behind
their wealth and power to save face.

The rich seem to have everything:
Ostentatious displays of Speed-boating and skiing.
Beautiful smiling women at their sides.
All the money in the world to easily forget about
devastating losses of their shares.

But the "people forget" part is what gets me in this song.
The rich have so much they forget about all the things they
have and search more more power.

Or they believe the lower classes forget just how important they are.

In the autumn of their life, they are beat down by the inevitable factor of age.
they do everything they can to keep their power, but end
up being just as human as everyone else.

This song was played at the 2016 republican national convention.
I typically love irony,
but this makes me absolutely fucking sick to my stomach.

Alice in Chains – Nutshell Lyrics 8 years ago
This song's message is simple, and yet so unbelievably powerful.
In a nutshell, <--(yes, I am a degenerate) It is about the growth & change of the inevitable fact that we will not only have to become self-reliant, but also care for the weaker ones we hold dear.

As kids & teens, We are allowed to make mistakes.
To be honest, most people predict it.
Many of us have fond memories of loving parents or guardians caring for our needs and comforting us during our "awful" childhood experiences.
There is "someone" to cry to. "Someplace to call home.

Later in life, we find "no one" to cry to, "no place" to call home.
We find little comfort in this "mature" & "grown-up" world. We now understand we will have to work for the rest of our lives, until we kick the bucket.
Ironically, we kick ourselves the whole way through. We weep over the foolish mistakes of "yesterday" and repeat these same emotions the very next day.

I've found the Title -"Nutshell," to be a metaphor for the song's message.

The Idea of being trapped inside of a nutshell is simple, Thank you Mike Myers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E6uGkotqKA

But Layne not only redefines this message, he transcends it to an intimidating level of symbolism.

Wallnut seeds grow, inside the nutshell, and are eventually forced out of their home, the tree. They cannot escape their nutshell, just as we cannot escape ours. They must leave home in search for comfort, -fertile soil, and all the warmth they can find. If they can't obtain it, they will perish and decay to become food and nutrition for the weeds and the rats.

Nature is brutal, and it puts us in a vicious cycle we may never escape.

Alice in Chains – God Am Lyrics 9 years ago
When he says "sure, god's all powerful, but does he have lips" it isn't actually a person in the band saying it. It's actually a movie quote from Sean Penn's character "Spicholi" (surely misspelled) in the movie "fast times at Ridgemont High". He plays a stoner and says it while taking a bong hit while his buddies are amazed. As far as the song, he's basically having a conversation with god almighty and telling him he's losing faith in him because he now worships a new god named "Heroin" and doesn't have time for anyone or anything else in his life since his new god has completely consumed every minute of every day. He's asking "how can you love me and let this happen to me?"

Black Sabbath – Zeitgeist Lyrics 9 years ago
Such a diverse and amazing song... One of my favorites off the new album.

Zeitgeist, by definition, is the primary thought or idea during a certain time period.

I believe the message shows an awful zeitgeist (thought) carried through troubling times- "On this sinking ship I travel, Faster than the speed of life, Not so super nova burns, The black holes turn and fade from sight." But the person carries through it.
I also think that maybe a greedy group of people that want to continue the zeitgeist for personal gain- "The strings of fear they are holding up the race, The puppets falling to the ground, The love I feel as I fly endlessly through space, Lost in time I wonder will my ship be found?"

Cheap Trick – Surrender Lyrics 10 years ago
I love this song and i think the general meaning is to have sex with people you love. You don't want STD's or other stuff. (don't give yourself away)
I really like the line "Then I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch," they seem to still love each other after so many years.

Alice in Chains – Acid Bubble Lyrics 10 years ago
I think maybe this song is about how bad habits are passed down in family.

-"You tried to kill me off, surprised I remain." Tried to stop a bad trait, but failed noticing the offspring's failures.
Lines such as -"Afraid of my own name," or -"I am the child that lives and cries in a corner, Dies in a corner," shows that the parent is trying to stop this bad trait (in a bad way not knowing it's bad) and the child remembers.

I noticed once the song repeated, only the lyrics change. This may mean the second time around, when the beat kid becomes a parent, the new parent hurts his children in the way his parents did, enforcing a family habit. (I see that -"built into the system" part helps on the family passing down bad habits.)

Alice in Chains – Lab Monkey Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe this song is about taking the idea of animal testing and putting it in the thought of abuse.

"Anybody out there? Anyone at all? Can you finally hear this deep in scratching through the wall?"
-lonely person looking for someone to spend time with.

"Came far to find me... Down the rabbit hole... Watch me smiling back while
Chewing on my skull."
-An abuser finds him and the lonely person is happy at first.

"I know... Won't forget... Limped away, From the wreck."
-usually when abuse happens, it's because the abused is doing something wrong and the abuser is trying to teach them it's bad. (according to the abuser)

"Is the monkey breathing? Lookin' kinda sick... Got a witty comment for me?
Have yourself a kick!"
-The abused person is hurt and damaged, but can't tell anyone to stop.

" Does it make you feel good? Are you full and strong? Gonna end up in this cage and I hope your stay is long."
-The abused hates the abuser now and hopes that someone will fight him.

"We'll never know what this is 'Til we take a look inside I'm sure we'll find what came before it dies."
-Referencing animal testing here, abuser hopes to hurt him without the abused leaving and doesn't know why the abused doesn't fight back.

"Had enough - I don't need you to stick my hide
Had enough - no more tears for me left to cry
Had enough - I don't need you to blind my eyes
Had enough - no more tears for me left to cry"
-The abused has had enough and leaves.

Probably my favorite song on the new album and I probably could of worded it better, but that's my interpretation. thanks for reading.

Soundgarden – Rusty Cage Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe this is about leaving a relationship with a bang. (family or romantic relationship.)

"You wired me awake and hit me with a hand of broken nails
you tied my lead and pulled my chain to watch my blood begin to boil."
-went out of your way to pissed and frustrated.

"But I'm gonna break I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run."
-I'm going to break free and leave someday.

" Too cold to start a fire I'm burning diesel burning dinosaur bones."
-maybe the abuser is trying to piss Chris off (start a fire) but can't so tries different methods to do so. (Diesel, dinosaur bones)

"I'll take the river down to still water and ride a pack of dogs."
-Chris may wait for the person to cool down and stop (river to still water) and then attack.

"Hits like a Phillips head Into my brain It's gonna be too dark to sleep again
Cutting my teeth on bars and rusty chains I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run."
-the abuse might be getting too damaging for Chris to fight back so he's doing everything he can to fight back.

"When the forest burns along the road, like God's eyes In my headlights. When the dogs are looking for their bones and it's raining icepicks on your steel shore."
-These lines, I believe are about the hunting down part. The time for Chris to fight back is about to come. (confused about the next part because 1.God's eyes could be in the headlight's way, or 2.could be the actual headlights. I'll just use both. 1st-The abuser tries to look like God and unable to be harmed, or 2nd- God is with Chris because he is doing the right thing. Chris (dogs) is/are looking for the abuser. Chris's strong stance/attack (icepicks) are fighting a strong person.(steel shore)

"I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my,
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run."
-Maybe this hasn't happened yet and Chris is thinking of doing it, or maybe Chris did it and is looking back on what he said to help him.

I love this song and it is one of my favorites. Thank you for reading.

Soundgarden – Get on the Snake Lyrics 11 years ago
My guess is that this song is about the fear of joining a gang. (motorcycle gang)

"Get on the snake with a swarm of motor flies,
get on the snake under the cola-colored sky."
-Join a gang that is badly viewed by others and is dark. (cola-colored)

"Don't worry, everything's clean, road worthy, hungry and mean."
-The person gets worried and the gang says: it's fine, we won't get caught and someone has to do this job.

"Get on the snake where the metal river bleeds,
Get on the snake where you never will believe,
Hey baby, what's your disease? My heart's bleeding I'm dying to leave."
-He sees destruction and death like he'd never believe and his heart and mind are through. (guess the disease and STD thing was to add filth?)

"Get on the snake where the water turns to steam,
Get on the snake with a suicide machine."
-He sees that the gang turns something that gives (water) into little or nothing. (steam) He also finds out gangs gain and loose members from death. (suicide machine)

"Don't worry, everything's clean road worthy, hungry and mean hungry and mean... hungry and mean..."
-He leaves and realizes that the clean and worthy parts only look good in evil eyes. I guess the repetition of hungry and mean shows that it's the most of it.

Thanks for reading.

Soundgarden – Mind Riot Lyrics 11 years ago
I Believe this song is about having to deal with problems being a teenager.
"I was slipping through the cracks of a stolen jewel,
I was tightrope walking in two ton shoes,
Now somebody is talking about a Third world war,
And the police said this was normal control"
-I feel this is about having trouble with life's problems, but getting more when you become a teen. Then a higher authority (police) tells you this has been with you your whole life. It turns out its just hormones.

"Candles burnin', yesterday somebody's best friend died, I've been caught in a mind riot."
-everyone is sad someone died. (must of been Chris's best friend, Andrew Wood) Chris is now in a very sad, confused, and angry state. (mind riot)

I was crying from my eye teeth and bleeding from my soul,
And I sharpened my wits on a dead man's skull,
I built an elevator from his bones,
Had climb to the top floor just to stamp out the coals."
-Chris is truly depressed about his friend and decides to learn from his mistakes. he visits his friends body (funeral maybe?) to forget his death and only remember the good times.

"I'm tired within
I'm luck's last match struck in the pouring down wind"
-Chris is tired of this whole thing and feels that is amazing because he dealt with a friend dying better than everyone else.

Soundgarden – Blow Up the Outside World Lyrics 11 years ago
I believe this song is about getting out of an abusive or bad relationship. This is just my point of view, and I respect yours.

"Nothing seems to kill me, no matter how hard I try. Nothing is closing my eyes."
-Nothing may make this person bust or die, simply because they don't know how to say stop or know what's too much, probably because this has been their only relationship.

"Nothing can beat me in, for your pain or delight."
-Basically the same as above, except the person realizes that the person or group that's hurting him is mentally gaining, losing, or both from this.

"Nothing seems to break me no matter how far I fall. Nothing can break me at all."
-Same as first line (important) this is all he knows because he's alone.

"Not one for giving up, though not invincible, I know."
-He doesn't leave cause he doesn't give up, but he can't take much more.

"I've given everything I need, given everything I owned, given these things to at least be ours alone."
-He has given all of his stuff to the person, but they won't even share.

"I've given everything I could, to blow it to hell and gone, so burrow down and then blow up the outside world."
-He realizes that he's given more than what one needs to be happy. so he hides and ignores the person.

"Someone, tried to tell me something, don't let the world bring you down."
-Someone tells him that there are more people to deal with than someone who terrorizes you. (important) now he talks with other people.

"Nothing can do me in before I do myself."
-He realizes he can at least kill himself on his own terms before letting someone else do it.

"So save it for your own, and the ones who can help"
-Tells the person to save yourself from the future emotional pain or take it out on someone who will fight back.

"Don't make it understood, knowing though I never would."
-Becomes stronger and tells them, if you really want to hurt me, you'd act like I couldn't protect myself.

"Trying though I know this world is blowing it to hell and gone. I never could."
-He's trying and needs help, but knows that this world with public money going to positive thinking programs would never help people out with a problem as horrible as this. Even Friends and family. At least directly.

Thanks for reading. This is a problem we can all relate to. If you are the person getting beaten, get help and leave. If you beat people, f**k you and I hope you get your ass kicked so you know how it feels. There are different ways to view songs and this is how I saw this song. It's definitely on my top 3.

Soundgarden – Room a Thousand Years Wide Lyrics 11 years ago
My interpretation (gets kinda complicated) is that this song is about Kim Thayil (the man who wrote the song) is pretending to be a different person around other people, and realizing that they won't know him for who he truly is.

"listen here he is inside"
-talking about who he truly is

"one who lives while others lie"
-the one who lives Kim's personality, Kim, knows him, but everyone else knows only lies

"I close my eyes and walk a thousand years, a thousand years become mine"
-Kim chooses not to care what people think, and show everyone who he truly is. He is proud of what he did, and true relationships start to form

"Seems he's near me as I walk"
-Kim may start to lie about his worst problems, and feels that his fake personality is still in people's minds

"One who loved what love denied"
(complicated one)
-Kim's true personality used to like what others didn't like about him, because it was fake and not really him. But now he realizes that if he shows people who he truly is, they'll think he's lying just to get on their good side

"He lives these years that I walk blind"
-Kim's fake personality is starting to confuse him and he is confused (blind) on what is really him

"All these years cannot be mine"
-All of the years he's been lying he's sad and knows he may not be able to take it back

"Tomorrow began tomorrow"
-Kim realizes he may only be happy about is inner self if he starts as soon as he can. So he starts tomorrow. (May of wished he didn't take so much time thinking about it?)

"A thousand doors: a thousand lies"
-There may be many different fake identities, many different lies (probably my favorite line)

"Room a thousand years wide"
-States another option of being truthful to everyone, have just a few great friends and being happy, or telling lies to satisfy everyone, lots of small friends and being sad about not telling the truth. (I believe line that states the main meaning of the song because its the title)

"I walk in the cold sun and wind"
-Kim decides to try being himself to everyone and finds most people being mean (cold) to him

"All these years cannot begin"
-The people that were mean to him now don't have a relationship (years) with him because they were lied to.

"Tomorrow began tomorrow"
-Kim reflects on the thought of starting what he did as soon as he could and is happy

(End)

This is one of my favorite songs on the album and probably in the top 20's in songs in general. I like it because its very eerie "Seems he's near me as i walk" actually reminds me of amnesia. (scary game) This song like almost all songs can be viewed in many different ways. I just talked about the way I see it, and I respect your viewpoints.
