Steven Wilson – Insurgentes Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song fits in line with what adrian5b was saying. This song is about people losing faith in this saint and her dream. It is also about how a dream can die with the person. I think this song reveals one of Wilson's inner fears, he seeks to accomplish so many things in life but when he dies, will no one else accomplish these things after him?

"Holy Mother of the simple one, when you smile at me you bring me down" The sight of her makes him sad.

"You betray your thoughts. All your prayers too low." He is speaking to the followers now. They pray quietly because they have lost faith in her.

"Now out of death you speak in tongues. And out of breath your work is done" The legend was that she spoke in tongues, once she was out of breath (or bread?) her work was done.

"And your dream absolves. And your path dissolve" When she dies, her dream falls apart and the path she has paved dissolves.

And your dream absolve,
And your path dissolve.

Steven Wilson – Get All You Deserve Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about the culture of greed and entitlement surrounding young people these days. It's how young people can fly through the world trying to get everything they think they deserve.

"Open the car door slow. Don't think you'll ever know my name" Sounds like the scene of a crash. The driver is slowly opening the door to see what/who he ran over. He'll probably never now the victim's name. Metaphorically, this person is recklessly driving through life, using and leaving people as he sees fit.

"Get all that you deserve, in this world"

"Love more than you can know. Have more than you'll ever need from me" He says he loves people/things but he loves more than he can even know, so he must not really love them. He has more than he needs so he leaves the person to die. He has more than he needs from this person so he leaves them to die.

Get all that you deserve, in this world

Get all that you deserve
Get all that you deserve
Get all that you deserve

Steven Wilson – Only Child Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm not sure but I think he's saying "Only child" not "An only child". I might just be trying to force the lyrics to fit what I think it means though. I think this song is about an adult who is still only a child. The devil metaphorically visits him and decides whether or not he should face reality. He decides that this person living in a meaningless existence would be worse than hell, a private hell just for him.

"A raven holding to narrow wrist. Pull it tight. Clothes are torn and the body twists. A single light" A raven, a metaphor for some dark presence, holds on to the wrist and pulls it tight, causing the clothes to tear and the body to twist. Some evil is forcing itself on someone. The light is the destination.

"The worse the struggle the more you fail. Strands fall down. The more you like it the more it hurts. Why stop now?" The presence continues to win control over him.

"Only child. A winning smile. A killing trial" This person, only a child in metaphor, is facing a trial on whether or not he should die but he has a winning smile that is swaying the judge.

"A broken rib and a bloody lip. All in hell. The fire's gone and your pride is stripped. A private hell" The judge has let him live and escape with few injuries (or did those injuries only occur in hell?). The fire from hell is gone, he is back in reality but his pride is stripped. The devil let him live because his his meaningless existence, this private hell, would be worse than actual hell.

"You never know why it is this way. Leave here now. Live through this on another day. Tonight sleep sound" He doesn't know why he survived but he must leave. He can live another day and sleep another night.

Steven Wilson – Significant Other Lyrics 13 years ago
Basically, he has a significant other (like a wife), his purpose who is there but he cannot find her. He tries to reach her but false leads mess him up. He must search inside for her because outside forces will lead him astray.

Steven Wilson – Significant Other Lyrics 13 years ago
"Pulling back from the precipice. Feel so small now, stars shine bright above." He has decided not to end his life or make some big mistake. Now he feels small in the light from the stars and the size of the universe.

"Don't know why, receive a better life for a song." Why should he receive a better life than others just for making music?

"Can't but try, other leads apply" I don't know, he can't help but try as other careers apply for his attention.

"Lookin' up at tragic rush on underground" People are trying to reach inside of themselves and are failing.

"Birds will turn and fly. Don't know why. Passin' through the day, only child." Some people (the birds) can turn and fly away without looking inside of themselves, passing the day like children with no purpose.

"Breathe a sigh, other leads apply" Maybe, he's happy he has a purpose in music and/or he is happy he is not stuck with music, other leads apply.

"Rainin' all day, trying to reach you. Feel so helpless, can't stop counting time" He is trying to reach the purpose within himself. He feels hopeless and cannot stop noting how long he has failed.

I think the lighter voice is the personification of his purpose speaking to him. I wish I could understand exactly what she is saying but the voice is too deeply buried.

(But in time)" Don't know why
(Warning, *something*) Hands above are stealing my heart
(Poison) Graceful dives
(Rain down from) Other leads apply
(the sky)

The voice is telling him that poison rains down from the sky above, i.e. outside influences will change him and ruin his chance at finding her (his purpose). He says that he doesn't know why other forces must come in to steal his heart. He takes graceful dives inside his persona but other purposes continue to apply.

Steven Wilson – No Twilight Within The Courts Of The Sun Lyrics 13 years ago
Damn, I cannot understand what the hell he's saying. I tried to add some but it's not much.

Drain the lake
Find the owner of the voice
Zip in the bag
And drop off across the noise
Examine the hairline
As archives in the strands
You’re telling me something
That puts the weakness in my hands

I see, but I suppose
I breathe, but I dispose
Black wheels turn yellow in the sand
I steal every idea that I can

Should I question the shadows in the lake?
Should I question, she moves aside her (something/lace?)
Wtf
I reach corrosion and sink here to die

Wilson was heavily inspired by Mexico and Mexican culture as he was creating this album. I think this song examines how inspiration can sometimes resemble and feel like stealing. The title, well, perhaps twilight is kind of like the gray middle between black and white. There is no murky gray in the courts of the sun. There is only a right and a wrong side in these... courts. The courts of his mind? Either the ideas are stolen or they're not. I don't know.

"Drain the lake, find the owner of the voice" He drains this lake, which is like a well of ideas. He finds the owner of the voice that has been inspiring him.

"Zip in the bag and drop off across the noise" Um, he zips up his bag of ideas he has stolen? Then he runs away I guess.

"Examine the hairline as archives in the strands" I don't know about the rest of the song but this is a beautiful line. He examines his hairline, thinking about how much he has aged and ponders how the strands of hair are like archives of his life.

"You’re telling me something that puts the weakness in my hands" Pretty straightforward, someone tells him something that makes him weak. Probably someone reveals to him that he is stealing ideas.

"I see but I suppose. I breathe but I dispose" Hm, he sees things and supposes from them, finds inspiration. He breaths but then disposes of those ideas?

"Black wheels turn yellow in the sand. I steal every idea that I can" Well, Mexico is a very dry place in certain areas so this image is probably inspired by driving through the desert as he goes through Mexico. Then he comes out and says it, he steals every idea he can.

(I could be completely wrong on these next few lyrics)

"Should I question the shadows in the lake?" Should he question the inspiration he receives from these places.

"Should I question, she moves aside her (something/lace?)" Maybe, oh this is a stretch, should he question these ideas when they (she) reveal themselves to be stolen? (Moves aside her lace like a mask to reveal the truth).

No fuckin' clue what he says here, something about a car?

"I reach corrosion and sink here to die" Straightforward. He can't take this anymore and lays down to die.

Steven Wilson – Venemo Para Las Hadas Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is probably inspired by the film discapacitadosocial was describing but I'm sure it is more than merely a plot description. Wilson has written it vaguely enough for it to apply metaphorically to other situations. Aside from the film, I think this song is about the death of innocence.

"When you're young you're sleeping with the love you're feeling" A young child lives with love dormant in their soul, waiting for it to emerge as an adult.

"Waking up to evening to the pulse you're breathing" Waking up, that love is ready to emerge for the world to see.

"Nothing left, just embers. Only we remember a bottle not for sharing, poison for the fairies." This is where it relates to the film. The witch has tricked the girl but the girl has gotten revenge. However, the young girl has been exposed to the evils of the world, i.e. trickery, manipulation, murder, etc. Now nothing is left but embers, physically and emotionally. Her innocence is gone. This dark piece of humanity she's uncovered is something she should not share. It is a poison to the fairies, a venom to the children. The world is a dark place which will destroy a child's innocence.

Steven Wilson – Abandoner Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about Steven Wilson trying to reach someone who has lost their way.

"The other half is somewhere else. A play in the dark, whines like dogs." I don't know about this part, could just be some unsettling imagery. He is in a bad mood and the play in the park whines like dogs, it's annoying him.

"I am restless, I am lost. Time freezes all. Flawless eyes." He feels restless and lost without this person. Time sort of freezes as he pictures this person.

"The rope you used to tie your soul, dreams enter plains, scatter remains." This person tied their soul down with complacency. Their dreams entered plains (flat, boring land, in other words no more dreams) and her soul's remains are scattered.

"I reach for you, denied your touch. Snow starts to glide, I confide." He reaches for her but cannot touch her. I don't why the snow is gliding but he confides all of this with the listener.

Steven Wilson – Salvaging Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about someone Steven Wilson knows who is trying to salvage their life. This person lives in a lie where he pretends to be happy but he really just sort of lives, without passion and happiness. Wilson and this person assess whether or not he can be saved but "the nails have been driven". It's too late.

"What was the point of making you trust? You live in a lie, the pain in the dust." -Wilson has been trying to help him, he trusts him but it is pointless if he does nothing to himself. He lives in a lie and the pain comes from the dust, from the lack of change.

"God always shouts and you always kick, through passionless hours. Yeah you make me feel sick." -I'm pretty sure it's hours. I'm not sure about the God part but this guy is resisting help and it makes Wilson sick.

"Your secret is taught but the body rejected." Wilson reveals to the man the secret that has been destroying him but he rejects it.

"Your smile's a question but the end is expected." Every time he smiles, he is putting up a front so people must always question if he is actually happy. The end is expected because if he makes any progress (he smiles) he reverts and falls apart again.

"A truce is obtained, excuses are given." They stop fighting, Wilson is probably through dealing with this guy. He doesn't want help.

"Time to assess, now the nails have been driven. It's hard to assess, now the nails have been driven.
It's time to assess, now the nails have been driven." Wilson assesses the situation. It's too late. This person has driven the nails into the proverbial coffin and buried himself. He is lost.

Good song but it rests on the same exact premise Cygnus X-1 by Rush does. Kind of a rip off if you ask me.

Rush – The Body Electric Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this song is about the awakening of the indidudal within someone who has always lived a life os subjugation and slavery. As said above, 1001001 translates to "I", I imagine the robot screaming this as he realizes he is an indivudal with his own thoughts and belief. My question is whether or not the ending is a happy or sad one. Is he replaying all of the tasks he was forced to do and then he finally breaks reversing back to his ways?

Rush – Red Sector A Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is from the perspective of a person who is surviving some Holocaust like event.

I find the lyrics:

"Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings
To survive?"

particularly moving. His references to helping his mother stand up straight implies that despite all of the pain and torture they have been through, they have still retained their humanity and their pride. Now they are asking whether or not they are the only ones who have.

Rush – Lakeside Park Lyrics 15 years ago
This, while mostly simple nostalgia, does go beyond that. I think he is saying that the magic of our childhoods will die at some point but it will always live on in our memories.
