10,000 Maniacs – Noah's Dove Lyrics 11 months ago
Could this song be about Michael Stipe? I knew that they were close friends but just recently learned they were romantically involved as well. His recklessness and acting as if he had more lives could be referring to the gay sex that was putting them both at risk. Also, the dove Noah sent out must have utilized "rapid eye movement" looking for a place to land.

@[jackiwillbe:38827] I stand corrected. Rubella could be heard in the background in one scene with Angus. I think it's while he was working on his science experiment.

Kenny Rogers – The Gambler Lyrics 3 years ago
@[Serpentspeaks:34795] I really like the idea that the gambler is himself, like his superego or something. The problem with that theory is that it's pretty clear the gambler dies and the man is still alive at the end of the song. I guess you could say that moment of clarity / enlightenment passed on and he went back to his normal day to day self. Like that moment when you realize you have to leave a bad relationship. Cool twist on the song, thanks.

Bad Religion – Kerosene Lyrics 5 years ago
Something is not quite right with the lyrics. I'm quite sure the 2nd line should be "shelter is a privilege of the SANE and COMPETENT," as others have mentioned. But the first line still doesn't make sense. "Everywhere I look I see exclusive huddled uninviting?" What does that mean? I think it's supposed to be "everywhere I look I see ????, huddled, uninvited." Referring to other homeless people. Also, the funeral pyre could be for the life that could have been, not the physical body which is still biologically alive. And finally, "tonight, buildings rage?" Is he burning down buildings? This doesn't seem consistent with the idea of a homeless man who has given up on life. Any thoughts?

@[acirvin:27897] This is not the original song I posted this comment about. May be something going on with the database. I've never heard this song before. It is kind of funny though, due to the randomness and meaninglessness of the lyrics.

Smoking Popes – Rubella Lyrics 5 years ago
I really wanted the lyrics to be "She explodes like a CYST and she burns from the first kiss." I think it would have fit the song so much better! But being honest and listening to the pronunciation, it's clear he is singing "fist." Not sure why. Maybe they changed it because "cyst" was too gross-sounding?

Ben Folds – F10-D-A Lyrics 8 years ago
I want to thank you for writing this song because

A) I didn't realize what the song was about and had no qualms about playing Ben Folds accompanied by an orchestra the other day in the car with my kids in the back seat.
D) My daughter who is musically inclined commented on the cleverness of the lyrics and how the notes being played matched the words. Then she looked up the actual lyrics and we all got quite a chuckle! Except my 10-year-old who we agreed was too young for the joke.
F) I had anal sex with my girlfriend for the first time later that same evening! I like to think the song lodged in my subconscious and gave me that extra motivation to get the job done :)

Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics 8 years ago
This is not a conversation between two people, dead or alive. This is a conversation between the id and the ego or the left and right brain. It could be about someone with multiple personality disorder or schizophrenia. The "old and empty house" is the person's brain. Over time society and the aging process have caused more of a divide between these two parts of the mind causing more back and forth between them whereas it used to be one whole personality, now it's two halfway broken identities. The truth varies day-to-day as each takes its run being dominant. One way or the other, the ship (body) will contain these two selves "safely" throughout life to shore (death).

Now what the video means I have no idea!

Is it possible there could be a double meaning? On the surface, it's about abduction, but it's really about how someone can abduct you emotionally when you fall in love, like steal your heart and it's scary.

Elton John – We All Fall in Love Sometimes Lyrics 9 years ago
"Another creative shift. Every lyric on Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was about Bernie and me, about our experiences of being able to make songs and make it big. I cry when I sing this song, because I was in love with Bernie, not in a sexual way, but because he was the person I was looking for my entire life, my little soul mate. We’d come so far, and we were still very naive. I was gay by that time and he was married, but he was a person that, more than anything, I loved, and the relationship we had was so odd, because it was not tied at the hip. Thank God it wasn't tied at the hip, because we wouldn't have lasted. That relationship is the most important relationship of my entire life. In a way, years later, I ended up being Captain Fantastic and he ended up the Brown Dirt Cowboy: Here, I’m living my fabulous lifestyle, collecting paintings, and Bernie is interested in horses and bull riding and shit like that. We became those characters. Who was to know?" - Elton John

The Decemberists – Down by the Water Lyrics 9 years ago
"When you can't figure out what a song is about, it's probably about a prostitute."

I agree the setting is Portland, but I think it's a tale of a young man who comes there for work back in the 1800s when the city was the major port of the region. He doesn't like the weather and the melancholy mood the town gives him Summer's always just around the corner, right?), but he finds comfort in the brothels, "down by the water" on the main drag. Maybe there was even prostitution on the ships? A historian's perspective here would be most appreciated.

I had a feeling the "lash-flashing Leda" line was key to unlocking the meaning. Some folks thought he was singing "leader" but I listened to it and it just didn't sound right. Turns out Leda is a character from Greek mythology who became impregnated by two men in the same night. I wasn't sure about the lash-flashing part and then I realized it was short for eyelashes. However it could be that there is also some anthromophization regarding describing a ship as a woman. So maybe there's a double meaning as there is a definite nautical feel to the lyrics. It seems the character is "knocked-down and torn up" emotionally about his behavior and possibly his love for the woman but continues going down to the waterline in order to fulfill his needs. Probably were way more young men there in those days than women so it's not hard to imagine this scenario.

Elton John – The One Lyrics 13 years ago
Nice comments, I think there are a few more "adult" themes here that are being overlooked. "In the instant that you love someone, in the second that the hammer hits, reality runs up your spine" - I have always thought they were talking about orgasm here. Maybe I just have a dirty mind but it makes sense, after that "instant" is over, you suddenly see things a lot differently and maybe some things that seemed extrememely important just a few "instants" ago no longer do.

Also the stanza about the drunken nights in dark hotels is just basically talking about having meaningless sex with no emotional connection. He is contrasting that with the experience of being truly in love.
