All that happens is that she loses the ability to appreciate the good things that happen to her, the bad ones will still hit, and things will only get worse. Man it takes a silly girl to lie about the dreams she has Lord it takes a lonely one to wish that she had never dreamt at all Just like everyone else...yeah, this is the bit that hits me. Because that is so me. It's silly to lie about your dreams, and if you don't tell anyone what you really want, they can't give it to you - but sometimes what you want seems so silly itself that you're shy to tell the truth about it. But if you don't, you're stuck without it. Until you're so sick and tired of not having anyone there to fulfill your dreams, you wish you could just stop dreaming, so it wouldn't hurt so much when they never come true. Oh look now There you go with hope again I think the 'oh look now' is her catching herself hoping, as much as him catching her. And as soon as she catches herself: Oh you're so sure I'll be leaving in the end She squashes it. Because she can't believe he'll stay when no-one else has, and if he doesn't and she hoped too hard he would...it'll hurt. Dig your ditch deep enough To keep you clear of the sun You've been burned more than once You don't think much of trust Hide. No-one can see you in the dark, but you can't see the sunlight either. She doesn't think that general warmth is enough to make up for the burn she gets sometimes. Treatin me like I'm already gone but I'm not I will stay where you are always She can't accept that, though. She 'doesn't think much of trust', and she doesn't think she has any reason to believe he's telling the truth. All he can do is try and show her. I will stay (oh look now, there you go) He stays, to prove himself - but she'll leave him. There's no way he can win, because she won't trust him when he says he'll stay, and if he does stay, she might still leave him before he can leave her. They both lose out in the end, because they could have had something lovely, but she keeps herself and him from being happy. |

EzEebs, I think that you're right it's not supposed to be really comforting, but it's not sarcastic either. Sarcasm is mocking, but I don't think the person is trying to mock anyone, she's totally sincere, because she's trying to believe herself that love will come for her and for the person she's talking to. It's about a real effort to be comforting, but the song itself isn't comforting - the person's trying so hard, but there isn't an answer. |

I don't have much to say about the meaning, though, because since it keeps coming up next to "Vermillion" on my mp3 player's shuffle, I just associate it with the Bokurano anime now >.< And while it fits very well with bits of that, it's obviously not what it's supposed to be about XD | |

| I heard it as "careless calm of strangers' reserve" but "common strangers" sounds about right too - and you're right about the oxymorons then. Calm would go better with reserve, but only if you're not looking at those contrasts. | |

Martha, I don't think that sounds stupid at all. It's one of the impressions I've always got from it too - nothing really coherent, but it always makes me want to write some sort of dystopian post-apocalyptic fic based on it. The lines about electric fences and the mosaic of the head of state and "someone is watching all of the outsiders" kind of add to that - it gives this sort of idea of some sort of [maybe collapsing] dictatorship. Adding in the fact that it's nominally at least about cathedrals, that could be how he feels religion is, but maybe not... It does feel like it's about rebuilding/trying to find a life in a world where you don't know where you belong. That's the basic idea I get strongly from it, anything more is speculation. |

Oh, this is so beautiful...I especially love "Tell me the stars are made of tin and that they're banging on the roof" For the whole song, it's like he's trying to get the person to let him comfort them, but they won't let him get close enough to trust him with it, he just wants to be allowed to help. The first set of reaosns are the most mundane, and then there's the beautiful poetic verse, and the lovely line about stars, which I guess is trying to show the wider concpets that can make you sad, that are hard to put into words "the stars are madeo f tin" sounds like someone dissillusioned with the world, finding all the beautiufl things fake, and "banging on the roof" that they feel trapped and want to escape...it's one of those huge things that just crushes you sometimes but you can't explain why. I suppose he recognizes that, because the "the sun will rise and keep your mind at ease" is him giving up on understanding why the person's sad, but trying to offer generalized comfort anyway by tellign them it will be better in the morning. The way he sings the "please" over and over is one of the things I love most about the song, he puts so much emotion in it, it's a really tender, pleading sound. |
