Manic Street Preachers – Nostalgic Pushead Lyrics 1 month ago
Not so much the lyrics, but the way they are delivered. I don't think I have ever heard another song where every line is delivered with such sheer enjoyment bursting from the singer and mic at every line.

Would not surprise me if this song was aimed more at the impresario characters that emerged from the 60s to manage the bands of the time.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Stop That Train Lyrics 3 months ago
I have a CD with Stop the Train and Stir it Up on. They are two different songs and the lyrics above are certainly not the ones Bob is singing on my CD to "Stop The Train" but are absolutely 100% the words to Stir It Up.

Did no one else notice? Google gets this wrong too. But if you search google for "Stir it up little darling" you will find the correct song. Similarly search for "Stop the train Im leaving" you will find that one too.

Two different songs

The Sisters of Mercy – This Corrosion Lyrics 4 months ago
On Jim Steinmans webpage there is the transcript of an interview with Eldritch:

"AE: People thought that with the second album we were completely Steinman-ised, but it's untrue. 'This Corrosion' is ridiculous. It's supposed to be ridiculous. It's a song about ridculousness. So I called Steinman and explained that we needed something that sounded like a disco party run by the Borgias. And that's what we got."

Ocean Colour Scene – Policemen & Pirates Lyrics 8 months ago
I think these are some of the cleverest lyrics I know of.

It sounds to me like it is a song about how difficult, unpredictable, ridiculous and unfair life can be, but we all have to get on with it despite the heartbreak. Part political, part romance, part "life in general".

For those not in the UK, The Sun and The Mirror are two of the most tabloid type of newspaper. Very clever I thought to highlight that amongst holes in the sky (ozone) that one tabloid of low credibility is shooting down another's showing the pointless madness that takes place whilst the real pains and problems of the world affect the humans. And yet we are all the same and all we can do is get on with life and try to love.
Brilliantly written.

@[eo10478576:44028] Well done and thank you. Of course we all understand people are free to interpret art in any way. However there is usually an intended meaning by the writer and I suspect your interpretations is far closer to the actual meaning than the others here.
I cannot believe someone as clever as Eldritch would bother to write something so puerile as a complaint about people enjoying a nightclub, his music was designed to be enjoyed at a nightclub. Whereas his obsession with politics and war seem a more likely topic for him to be writing about.

Adam Ant – Stand And Deliver Lyrics 2 years ago
Apart from the fun side of the song, it seems clear that the message is: "Outlaws are cool, everyone else is fooled and foolish".\n\nIt highlights the vacuity of the fashion and show business industries and how much stock most people put in to the value of these things, which we all know lasts but a year at most. It comments on how people use their appearance to hide the gap in their lives and soul - we all know people that are more style than substance.

The Sisters of Mercy – Flood I Lyrics 2 years ago
As we all know, lyrics for The Sisters are laden with literary, lyrical, philosophical, theological and other types of references. I like them for that, and have long found myself reading up on topics that sometimes give me the source that Eldritch is referring to. For example, as a young teen listening to Floodland, I had yet to hear Dylan sing of "Stuck inside of Memphis" so when I first heard that song by Dylan it gave me a little more context for Elritch\'s wonderfully atmospheric words. \n\nFor years I thought his "sackcloth and ashes" were a reference to Savonrola (sackcloth) from Florence. \n\nToday reading up about Ninevah an ancient city, I side tracked onto the story of Jonah from the bible and found a direct quote (on wiki - duh! I have some shoddy sources :) ) \n\nThat quote: "The king of Nineveh puts on sackcloth and sits in ashes"\n\nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonah\n\nAnd:\n"The entire city is humbled and broken with the people (and even the animals) in sackcloth and ashes".\n\nI\'ve long adopted the idea from others that Floodland does cover the end of the world, so with that in mind these references seems to fit in with this idea, until I read that, I was lost on this songs meaning and think that in typical Eldritch style it might just be metaphorical. \n\nOn that last comment about "is it metaphorical"? I wondered to myself, \'Is this another song about his early relationships?\' A love life like Armageddon because of the pain it inflicted. \n\nWhat an incredible artist Andrew Eldritch is. Did I hear it in conversation, or did I see it? I cannot remember, but in my memory I always remember the idea that Alan Whicker (British TV (icon?)) said Eldritch was the most intelligent man he had ever met, and Whicker met with some astonishingly influential people throughout his career.

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Jinx:40313] Of course Simon thought so deeply, he is held as one of the best songwriters of all time. Do you think the brush strokes of Van Gogh are by chance as well? The great artists intend every single stroke and nuance of every single note and second.\r\n\r\nBruce Springsteen recorded over 2000 takes of Jungleland, why do you think he did that, why did the band and studio staff support it? Because it was the search for perfection. \r\nThe search for perfection does not leave something as important as lyrics to chance. \r\n\r\n"Don\'t over analyse?" Well, OK, but the entire point of art is that the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so let each establish their own level of meaning. Yours is shallow, not deep, enjoy it, but don\'t tell others to not search for meaning, you will kill artistic exploration with such sentiments and that is a heartbreaking thing to be doing. Open your eyes Jinx, open your mind, and your heart and embrace the depth of meaning and feeling that these artists break themselves to achieve. They did it FOR YOU, so if you chose to ignore it, fine, but do not tell others not to.

Bruce Hornsby & the Range – Way It Is Lyrics 2 years ago
Seems to be about racial discrimination as well as other systemic discrimination built in to the system.

There is nothing complex in the lyrics, but somehow this song captures at least two sentiments perfectly : 1) The victims disadvantage. 2) The onlookers emotion which to me conveys heartbreak, tragedy, empathy and deep frustration.

I think that is what makes this song truly timeless, important and beautiful. It carries the hallmark of real craftsmanship; to evoke so much with such gentle words.

Cold Chisel – Bow River Lyrics 2 years ago
Of course it is obvious to see the song as "about going back to the special place", but that doesn't take much to come to that interpretation. Along those lines you would think David Bowie's Space Oddity is about a man going to space, you are all being too literal. Space Oddity is not about going to space, just the same as Bow River is not about going back to Bow River.

It is about the loss of youth and being unable to face up to the demands of the adult world, and every second being obsessed with that loss and trying to find a way back.
He does say "I have my first set of wheels and I AM going back", he says when he gets his first set of wheels it is the first thing he is doing. So we can infer that he cannot yet go back and he is spending his time hating the factory work and thinking about getting out, but unable to, until the last part of the song.

1) This site is song meanings not "songs I love". So your comments of "I love this" are just not adding value to the discussion, but thanks for letting us know.
2) This is the shiiittt - how about you express yourself with eloquence and elegance rather than 'spring break style' shouting, you will find you are suddenly far more capable of influencing and engaging people.
3) The singers name is not John Bryne.
4) The lyrics about bows are more likely to be about childhood innocence or the fashion of the 50s (think Grease) than paedophilia. Paedophilia was a word that was almost never used at the time of writing the song, and people did not think that way back then. Paedophilia is very much a 2010s 2020s consideration even though such crimes have long been committed.
5) "This song is about" is definitive, so it is worth backing it up with a reference to where you heard Bryne say so. Or try saying "I think" or "To me this means" or "It might be".
6) The years between when Fight Club was written and this song produced (there were many), and Chuck was a teenager at the time this was written.

This site can be a great resource.

Deacon Blue – Real Gone Kid Lyrics 4 years ago
The web has a few places saying it is about Maria McKee, but none of that tells us anything really. He says he will tear out pages, and that the old 45s don't mean anything...but that still tells us nothing.

The band is Scottish, does "Gone" mean something in Scotland, is it slang? What does it mean? Does it mean she really "left somewhere and is now gone" ? That would be the correct meaning in English.

So did she leave somewhere? Or does it mean she is out of her mind ? Her mind is real gone? Or does it mean something else?

Possibly a hint at "impostor syndrome" in the lyrics - maybe for them and their career (doubtful - they are super talented) or possible people in general these days - it is a feeling that seems to affect more and more people these days. CBD's music is often littered with religious references and this seems to be another, although more ancient Greek than Christian this time. The ferryman being the man to take you across the river Styx and to Hades.

A journey he has been preparing all his life - i.e. Life prepares us for death. It's pretty clear if you read it literally.

As an aside, if you like this, I urge you to check out the album with this on, The Getaway, it sits in my collection alongside Linkin Park, RATM, LZ, Kate Bush, White Lies, and is one of the nicest albums of it's time. Just a shame CDB is know by most folks for Lady in Red which isnt really representative of his style.

If you are going to post something that will be online for a very long time at least have the brains to make sure you are right. English soldiers have been organised and paid since medieval times. It is about "song meanings", if you really feel it necessary to air your personal opinion on a song, please do it on youtube and stop ruining songmeanings with your pointless opinions - that is NOT what this site is for.

For those that still don't get it - read up on what a "song" is, and then what "meaning" is, and then add the words together and think about it.

Having listened to it again and again and read the comments. I would say it sounds so much like it is about Princess Diana's death. Strange topic for a song, but the references are all there in the lyrics, not hidden you just need to know a few things. Such as - Love in the City of Lights=Paris where Diana died with her lover Dodi ******in a tunnel****** which was a different route they took that night to avoid the paparazzi. The affairs/betrayals/guilt/death/

Clear as crystal I think.

k.d. lang – Miss Chatelaine Lyrics 10 years ago
Chatelaine is a lady of the castle in French. It is also a famous wine growing domain.

I can find no evidence to suggest that Ms Lang was Ms Chatelaine in 1988.

So, is she saying I don't know why I have become a soak? (Drunk),
"Every time your eyes meet mine
Clouds of qualm
Burst into sunshine"
That is certainly what happens when an alcoholic has a drink. Not for me to say that KD has any association with drink, those that know her better than I will know that.

Just that the lyrics certainly don't match to the idea that she is confused about why she got the awarded a title of Ms Chatelaine.

Leonard Cohen – Dance Me to the End of Love Lyrics 11 years ago
Im kind of getting a little frustrated by the comments on this site in general, this song is written about something specific by LC, it is not about what listeners interpret it as.

****************************************************************************************
As mentioned, it is indeed about the string quartet that played at the gasing of the jews in the holocaust.
****************************************************************************************
It shouldnt be trivialised into something less. Sure, a song can be interpretted in many ways, as with all art, however LC intended this song to be about the holocaust - therefore comments stating it is about something else are invalid, and shouldnt be here at all. Those who think it is about something else could say "To me this song means...." but you should not say "This song IS about".....because you are making a definitive statement which is totally wrong.

Joan Armatrading – Drop the Pilot Lyrics 11 years ago
Whilst lesbianism was a political topic in the 70s and 80s, I think J.A. was more politically focussed on the issues of Africa than those of bedroom antics, and I think she is educated enough to use a finer metaphor for breasts the balloons. Perhaps in the 5th form locker room Balloons works, but J.A. is far more of an artise to sink to that level.

Thehsabs, you could do some reading on why using "abolutes" in discussion is often frowned upon. Perhaps you could have said "In my opinion" rather than telling the world that you know exactly what this is about.

White Lies – Bigger Than Us Lyrics 12 years ago
PS..."Bigger than us"...meaning that the things that happened before Diana died (rifts in the marriage, relationships with Dodi Fyed, Major James Hewitt etc), and the supposed reasons she was killed meant that whatever good/love had happened between husband and wife could not help her, and that it was out of his hands - in the eyes of the royals she had done untold damage to thier image and therefore the problem was bigger than a marital issue.

Im not convinced, but it certainly could "fit" the lyrics.

White Lies – Bigger Than Us Lyrics 12 years ago
Every reponse talks about similar things. Which could all lead to my interpretation...

Maybe:

Young girl....could indicate someone who was young when they married, also could suggest naivety of the world she has become part of, and never wanted to the conclusion it came to.

It is sung with a lot of anguish suggesting tragedy.

The opening lines mention a tunnel.

Upon hearing this song the first time, I immediately thought of Princess Diana, who was killed in a car accident in a tunnel. Many conspiracy theorists think she was assasinated by the UK secret service.

I should have added that it could be political about the exploitation of Africa's riches and that trying to fight against this is a loosing battle. Perhaps Joan thinks there is someone better to lead the continent or country she is singing about - "Im the one you need".
