MonumentuM – A Thousand Breathing Crosses Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is a reference to Paul Valery's "Le Cimetiere", which I believe was first finished in 1890 and then re-worked and then published in 1920. Anyway, the poem itself is about life, death and the soul. You can hear that same theme in this instrumental.

Chroma Key – When You Drive Lyrics 12 years ago
It annoys me when people peg this as calming, as if it were some mindless new age garbage. It's every bit troubling and sad as it is spiritual.

The Gathering – The West Pole Lyrics 12 years ago
Going by the overall feel of this piece, I'd say it's about death. The lyrics also drop hints as to the subject:

As I watch the miracle
Of seasons changing
I saw the leaves die

Our protagonist is contemplating life, observing and reflecting on its changes.

Silje also has more of an breath-y sadness to her "vulnerable" sounding vocals.. even a more soulful feel than Anneke did. I'll never understand how people can accuse Silje of copying her.

OSI – Big Chief II Lyrics 12 years ago
A nod to Earl King? http://www.hurricanebrassband.nl/Repertoire%20big%20chief.htm

This song uses terminology related to Mardi Gras (Second-line, Esplanade, a street in New Orleans). It also feels like the above song, except turned on its head and given a more modern scenario.

This is a great song. The beginning is well written.

Tiamat – A Deeper Kind Of Slumber Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't think this song is about heroin at all. It's just very "out there" in nature. Right off the bat, the song makes reference to a few different mythological beings; Robin Goodfellow (a mischievous creature), Diane (NOT Dianae! Diane aka Artemis was the goddess of childbirth, hunts, virginity and the wilderness) and finally, Morpheus who is commonly known as the god of dreams. I think the opening verse pretty much defines what this song is about. Edlund uses these mythological beings symbolically to represent something feelings of not being able to have something he's had sight of (Robin Goodfellow) and feelings of hopelessness and perhaps apathy as a result (Diane, my muse. Morpheus in my heart; your sand in my veins).

Of course, I could still be way off but these are my thoughts. One of my favorite songs from their gothic rock period nonetheless.

No comments? This is a good song. The tremolo picked bits around the 2 minute mark really add a new dimension to this.

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony – Mo' Murda Lyrics 13 years ago
Some of their best work is on this track, imho. I think one of the most respectable things about Bone Thugs is the duality of moods in their music. These guys rap about murder and occasionally, social issues but it's all presented in a way that's convincing, nonchalant, and subtly sad (see 1st of the Month); moods which, on the surface, are seemingly incompatible; this song in particular sounding both convincing and even relaxed. Whether some of this is intentional or not, I think it's an overlooked aspect of their music.

I know "forlatt" means "abandoned" and "lys" means light, so I guess lysforlatt means light is completely abandoned?

My Dying Bride – My Wine In Silence Lyrics 13 years ago
I see it more in this way, moreso than a song about lying about love. The way the vocals are sung suggest this as well. I've also updated the lyrics. Good song.

Satyricon – Hvite Krists Díd Lyrics 13 years ago
Good translation! :) But shouldn't the line "We are burning God's children on the bonfire" just be "We are burning God's children in the fire"?

Satyricon – Hvite Krists Díd Lyrics 13 years ago
I corrected a small error in this: pø bølet --> på bålet, which means "the fire" in English. pø and bølet aren't words in the Norwegian language, I don't think.

Vreid – Arche Lyrics 13 years ago
From what I understand, Arche essentially means 'beginning'. According to Greek philosophy, the arche is where everything originated and also where it will end. It was first theorized by Thales that water was the basis of all things, supported by the observation that moisture could be found throughout the entire world. However, this theory was refuted by his successor, Anaximander, who stated that water couldn't produce it's opposite -- fire. Anaximander proposed the idea of an indefinite substance as the arche, called apeiron. Following the pattern, Anaximenes, who was Anaximander's student, proposed a theory which stated that air is the arche, rather than an indefinite substance. Anaximenes observed that decreasing the density in air (or rarefaction) creates fire, which can become water and eventually, stone (earth).

Vreid – The Blood Eagle Lyrics 13 years ago
To me, this song is obviously about the torture/execution method in which the ribs are cut open and broken open so they resemble blood stained wings. It is debated whether or not this torture method is fictional or true. Some believe it was true and was brought on by hatred of Christianity by Pagans and some believe they're tales heroism, poetry or misinterpretations of the accounts.

Skyclad – No Strings Attached Lyrics 13 years ago
White elephant is an idiom for something that's invaluable. I agree that it's about hopelessness and failure, though. On the surface, it does seem to be about a musician who gave up on his dreams but it can be taken as a huge metaphor. Great song.

Tiamat – The Temple Of The Crescent Moon Lyrics 13 years ago
This album is marred by terrible production. The volume on the bass is too high at times and the kick drums have too much presence (seriously, did they really need to be that much punch? O.o). On the other hand, the cymbals and snares also lack that oomph. Great album musically but the quality is unforgivable.

OSI – Free Lyrics 13 years ago
I specifically like the lines:

Watch the sky,
And your television
If something don't look right
Dial 1-800-YOURE FREE

It's succinct but it implies so much and the ironic usage of the phone number is genius. A lot of people also find Mike's vocals intolerable but I think they create an interesting contrast, especially in this song.

Faith No More – Zombie Eaters Lyrics 13 years ago
I realize songs are open to interpretation but to me, there's no doubt this song is a metaphor for dependency. The lines:

"You're everything
That's why I cling to you
When I emerge
My thoughts converge to you
To you"

and..

"I like to make a mess
I laugh at your distress
I sit all day in my crib
Absorbing all you give
I'm helpless
I'm flawless"

are proof of this. It's over-exaggerated and silly but it's brilliant, actually. Great song. Amusing too.

The lord and lady, Frej and Freja, are the rulers of Vanaheim and they are united in the sacred marriage which brings life to the arable and pasture lands. Not known to everyone is the secret lore of witchcraft which the Vanir-gods teach the chosen ones."
