Jackson Browne – Lawyers In Love Lyrics 4 years ago
@[Tmo2199:33975]
I've always thought the political subtext behind this song is super boring. I prefer to think of it a quirky love song also!

Spoon – Me And The Bean Lyrics 4 years ago
It's often said that a developing baby in the womb resembles a bean, particularly when viewed in early ultrasounds.

I know a few people who referred to their unborn child as "bean" or "the bean" before giving the child their birthname.

Song being written about feelings for your first born makes sense. "I have your blood inside my heart" is an incredibly powerful line.

The Decemberists – Valerie Plame Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the tone of this song is more empathetic towards Valerie Plame rather than mocking. It's sung from the point of view of someone who saw her picture on TV, found her story fascinating and tragic, and becomes so smitten he imagines hanging out with her during some of her exploits.

A great tune musically as well. All of the Decemberists get involved and it builds and builds until it all drops out for the vox-only, Beatles-nodding ending.

"ya'll don't know what it's like
being male, middle class and white
it gets me real pissed off and it makes me wanna say

Wilco – Kicking Television Lyrics 16 years ago
Get off your ass and do your best to get out and be a part of life. Sure, we'll never be completley rid of antiproductive things like television, but at least we can try to enjoy being humans with other humans in a communal experience. So what's one good way to "kick" television??

Wilco – Handshake Drugs Lyrics 16 years ago
I really like you explanation, suppossablethumps. Jeff Tweedy has always been so relatable to me because of his normalcy. Tweedy's lyrics, espescially around this time period in Wilco's recording history, seem to often deal with getting past the recklessness and anxieties of being an unattatched young man and moving into becoming a responsible adult/father/husband. Battling emotional disorders and addictions . is very difficult to begin with, but even more so when others who love you are depending on you. Ultimately choosing to become a better person for yourself and you loved ones requires listening to their concerns and feelings. Asking them "what do you want me to be?" That also includes finding the balance between your creative loves and your role as a human in a relationship.

Plus the music in this song kicks ass, especially on the live version when Nels Cline drops that feedback at the end.

Oh yeah, buymeagreenhouse, that line in I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, about the blow in Amsterdam is obviously a toungue in cheek joke. Jay Bennett is making fun of the fact that Wilco isn't your typical "partying" rock band.

Sublime – Scarlet Begonias Lyrics 17 years ago
yeah the beat does come from James Brown's Funk Drummer...and yes also sampled by Easy E, Fatrick.
In fact it's been sampled by a million hip hop influenced acts.

Billy Bragg and Wilco – One by One Lyrics 17 years ago
a man growing old, thinking of his true love while on his death bed?

i always thought the song was too pretty for that explanation, but i can't shake that feeling when i listen to it.

what a gorgeous tune, one of Tweedy's best vocal takes.

Sleater-Kinney – One Beat Lyrics 17 years ago
about the magic of creation over the horrors of destruction.

it's dance
it's music
it's literature
it's art
etc.

it's about how all those things are what make us human, and they are fairly abstract and not easy to explain scientifically. yet the process is wonderfully powerful. "a sonic push for energy exploding like the sun"

a great, great, song and some of corin tucker's best lyrics.

Badly Drawn Boy – Fall In A River Lyrics 18 years ago
No I think he's married...to a woman.

This is song IS way to short, great effect on his voice. I think it's about a guy who's pretty silly and simple, and how he may be right for some girl anyway.

The Flaming Lips – Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree with loafer's interpretation. there is also a nod to Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii concert film going on. The music, particularly the bass/drums sound quite a bit like the music the Floyd was producing when they filmed the Pompeii movie.

This is also the first Lips song in quite some time where Wayne doesn't sing vocals. They are sung by Steven Drozd

Faith No More – Easy (Commodores cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
I they think they have tongue firmly planted in cheek with this cover.
It's almost like they're making fun of the sappiness of the original, hence the "eww" part before the solo.

They probably decided to do this on behest of their record company, you know:

Record Company: "Hey Faith No More, can you guys do a cover of a well-known song that's fairly popular and easy to digest so we can get a little crossover-mainstream appeal going"

Faith No More: "Sure how about a Lionel Ritchie tune (sarcastically)"

Record Company: "Perfect! That's the spirit!"

Bob Dylan – Joey Lyrics 18 years ago
Emmylou Harris does alot of background vox on this record, I would assume it's her on this track

submissions
Ramones – California Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
actually the band the Ramones cover on this song is The Rivieras, not the Beach Boys. In fact I think it came out even further back than that but The Rivieras version is the best known. Of course this Ramones version is the best to listen to.

Sleater-Kinney – Light-Rail Coyote Lyrics 18 years ago
It's funny, I remember seeing the pic in the Oregonian paper of the coyote on the MAX before this album came out.
That image may not be exactly what the song is about, but it is a great synopsis of Portland, rugged wilderness meets progressive urban mass transit, it's all right there in microcosim. A wonderful tribute from the ladies in Sleater-Kinney.

submissions
Pink Floyd – Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast Lyrics 18 years ago
I believe the Alan in question is Alan Stiles, roadie for the Floyd, that's his voice you hear as he cooks breakfast for the boys.

The Flaming Lips – Up Above the Daily Hum Lyrics 18 years ago
Some people cringe at Wayne trying to hit the falsetto on this one.

I am not one of those people, I think this is one of the Lips most beautiful tracks

submissions
The Smashing Pumpkins – Hummer Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the title refers to Corgan's writers block, but the actual lyrics don't reflect it other than the one line "Life's a bummer...when you're a hummer" He had a bad case of writers block while writing this album.

submissions
The Flaming Lips – The Gash Lyrics 18 years ago
"Still the last volunteer battles on"
is a great line, this is one of Wayne's best songs lyrically IMO and I'm a huge Lips fan. I love the anthemness of it, it's a pretty epic statement.

Basically life can suck pretty fuckin bad sad sometimes, but if we pull together we can make through as a species...

submissions
The Flaming Lips – Fight Test Lyrics 18 years ago
Seems like the lyrics are about deciding when violence is the proper action to take. In this case it's when someone disrespects a women you're in love with.

ANYWAY, Cat Stevens did sue, and I think he demanded something like 75 percent of the royalties or maybe even all of them if I'm not mistaken.

Primus – Spegetti Western Lyrics 18 years ago
These lyrics perfectly capture the feeling of being unemployed or in a dead end job and having nothing better to do than watch tv and smoke grass.

Not that I would know anything about that....

self explanatory, and beautiful.

One of Jeff Tweedy's best lyrics, very honest

submissions
The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the way the vocal hits the beginning of the line "I Hear The Sound Of A Gentle Word" in the first verse. I think it's Brian singing, raises the hair on my neck every time!

The Flaming Lips – Race for the Prize Lyrics 18 years ago
good comments moomoosnake
as with most Lips tunes on the last few albums, the pretty music deceives a bit of negativity in the lyrics...even though it sounds positive on first listen, digging a bit deeper shows the underlying realism.

often times folks who strike to help improve the comfort of living for strangers do it at a cost to their own well being as well as those close to them

submissions
Beck – Soul Suckin Jerk Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah the version on the Loser EP is awesome, different music and the verses are rearranged. Plus it contains one of Beck's great one-liners "Rockin' The Town Like A Moldy Crouton!!" Freakin' hillarious stuff.

good point about the Levy collaboration, they wrote together for most all of the Desire album I think.

The Flaming Lips – Waitin' for a Superman Lyrics 18 years ago
This song was inspired by a conversation Wayne Coyne had with his brother during the time before his father passed away. His father was very ill and slowly dying and Wayne's brother asked Wayne if he was doin ok, or if things we "getting heavy". Wayne thought things we already "as heavy as they could be" but realized his brother was letting him know that it would get worse when their dad does eventually pass away. A beautiful, beautiful song with a gorgeous melody written by Steven Drozd

kublip may have a strange user name, but he's right on...

so sad for her, she missed hanging out with the most fearless freaks of them all!

Pink Floyd – A Saucerful of Secrets Lyrics 18 years ago
I have actually read inteviews with Roger Waters where he says the song is about the stage of a battle, exactly like Nicodemus describes in the comments above. However all Floyd fans know that the fellows can be bullshtters on occasion, so that could be a load of said BS. Either way a great track, love the requiem type singing at the end.

submissions
The Beatles – Mean Mr. Mustard Lyrics 18 years ago
"His sister Pam" was added in(I think John's original lyric had her name as Shirley or something) to fit with the medley concept. So yeah, Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam are siblings

actually just heard it on the anthology and it's "shelly"

originally the last track, "her majesty" which is just a little tiny sound bit, was supposed to go between "Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam". But I think the label decided to cut it for continuity so McCartney just tagged it on the end of Abbey Road. If you can program your CD player, you'll see how it fits between the two!

submissions
Wilco – In a Future Age Lyrics 18 years ago
I love those last four lines, a great (proper) ending to a fantastic album
The song kind of ruminates on the serious subject matter that came in the songs before it. It's closure on everything else that's gone on, or at least as close as to closure as it can be.

submissions
R.E.M. – At My Most Beautiful Lyrics 18 years ago
The music in this song is heavily influenced by Brian Wilson of Beach Boys fame, the "way to make you smile" lyrics are a nod to Wilson's long unfinished (until 2004) "Smile" album.
Although the lyrics go alot deeper than that obviously

submissions
Wilco – Jesus, Etc. Lyrics 18 years ago
"Jesus" at the start of the song is definitley used as an exclamation not a pronoun. Nothing better then hearing this live when Tweedy asks the crowd to sing along to "our love is all we have". What a beautiful lyric!

Beastie Boys – Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun Lyrics 18 years ago

Yournewgod, you've turned me around full circle on this song, I used to think it was mindless, lowest common denominator crap, now I realize that Durst IS the next Da Vinci. Thank you sir, you're infinite knowledge of the arts is breathtaking and abundant all at once.

the "ben" lyrics are referencing Michael Jackson's song "Ben" which references the "Williard" movie, so technically you're both right on that one :)

Queens of the Stone Age – The Sky Is Fallin' Lyrics 18 years ago
Grohl is a great drummer and he did contribute mightily to this record, but not particularly on this track. The key sound to this track is that pummeling guitar riff, not the drums.

submissions
Radiohead – Just Lyrics 18 years ago
it doesn't matter what the guy says at the end of the video, the point is that his words are so awful/shocking, etc that everyone has to lay down in the street and give up. It's not what he's saying per say, it's the fact that he could say something THAT powerful. Kinda similar to the briefcase in the movie Pulp Fiction, it doesn't matter whats in the briefcase, what matters is that something actually is THAT important/beautiful, etc to the characters in the movie.

Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien Lyrics 18 years ago
Don't think there is any similarities to the Dylan track other than the nick on the title...
I did read somewhere that the band was trying to mimic Miles Davis with the muisc/chord progressions, particularly during the "uptight" part

Spiritualized – Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space Lyrics 18 years ago
i believe this is the second pop song(I've Heard) to reference Pachelbel's canon in D major, the other being Blues Traveler's "Hook" which is the only similarity it has with this song as it kinda sucks, and "Floating In Space" is freakin' wonderful

submissions
The Smashing Pumpkins – Hummer Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's titled Hummer because Billy Corgan had writer's block going on while he was working on this album, he was "humming" trying to think of lyrics

Pearl Jam – Lukin Lyrics 18 years ago

Bob Dylan – Joey Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a sprawling (even by Dylan standards) tune that pretty much glorifies Joey Gallo, one time Mafia boss who was shot down in Little Italy, NYC
Kind of controvesial subject matter, as alot of folks thought Gallo was a psychopathic murderer type of fellow, check out Lester Bangs article "Bob Dylan's Dalliance With Mafia Chic" for a pretty strong rebuttle to this song.
Either way fantastic storytelling.
