"Strange Room" refers to either a police station cell after a ruinous night (hence talking to the officer), or the stranger\'s bedroom they woke up in after the previous song on the album, "Put the Radio On".\n\nI was in a long-distance relationship with a girl I first met in high school, 11 years later. I had moved away from Britain to Australia in that time, but was preparing to move back to be with her. It fell apart and didn\'t happen, and so the chorus ("finally I\'ve come home") rings bittersweet for me. |

I love the line "I don't remember losing sight of your needs". Like tumblebiscuit said, the ambiguity is striking. Is he admitting it & implying he was neglectful, or was he genuinely blindsided.
I relate to the song with my ex-girlfriend, who accused me of the same. I agreed with her that I lost sight of her needs, but it doesn't feel right, because I loved her deeply and I still do. The singer is pained and confused by the sense of loss, but knows he's not an acrobat and can never be good enough for her. |

To me, the "you" and "me" is actually the same person...the same person talking to themself. The person is trapped in a rut of shame and self-loathing, beating themself up and feeling useless. This kinda fits with Freestate later on the album, which is about letting go and recovering from it. |

I had a big crush on this girl who I used to work with. I also had a big feeling (no idea whether it was true or not) that she also fancied me as she constantly attempted to speak to me.
But the both of us were shy (me considerably more so) and the spark failed to ignite. Eventually I quit my job for a new one and left her behind forever despite my atrraction towards her. And "that was the hardest part"!
I relate to every line of the lyrics too. The sweetest taste, the trying to sing but couldn't think of anything etc. I am socially inept and this song perfectly encapuslates my thoughts that I am unable to speak out.
I failed to tell her my feelings, hence the "sweet taste" just going down my throat and back into my mind, instead of somewhere useful (her ears).
I also find parallels with "The Scientist" here in terms of song meaning. I often listen to the two songs back-to-back. |

these two shouldn't be together in one SM entry like this, they're completely different songs.
Reign of Love seems to me like its sung from the perspective of a man, who is getting married to his lover (church), but doesn't really want to, probably doing it under peer pressure. He is perhaps in love with someone else (i.e. next track "Yes", as someone else pointed out) but will never know now as he is marrying and becoming a prisoner to the reign of love.
The "reign of love" to me seems like the grandiose ideal of a a man and a woman falling in love, getting married and living together forever after. But this man has doubts, is now a prisoner to his feelings and regrets not speaking up about it as he can't just stop the marriage now, lest he lets the "reign of love" down (and all those who believe in it, i.e. his and his lover's families at the ceremony) |

lol I love this song so much. catchy as hell. the lyrics and the title give me the impression of anxiety and social awkwardness when the singer tries to get with the girl. which I can wholeheartedly relate to of course.
In live videos on youtube, Dave changes the fourth line to "Just like me and you" which makes a bit more sense. |

If this song is about heroin addiction, then it's the shittiest song about heroin addiction i've ever seen.
I expect songs about drugs from New Order for example, but Depeche Mode? why would Gore write about heroin addiction when Dave was the one doing it (6 years after this song mind)? The albums all had certain themes such as love, religion, devotion and other things spiritual, but fucking snorting coke behind the stage isn't one of them.

Indeed, this song hits home for a lot of us. I had (one of) the most beautiful, sexiest, most angelic-looking girl i've ever met confess that she had deep feelings for me and that she really wanted to go out with me. As time went on, I became one of the most important people in her life, but sadly, on my end, it was all looks. She meant absolutely nothing to me otherwise. But because of how strikingly gorgeous she was, I faked my emotions and approach towards her to try and get in. as you can see, faking attraction never ever works out. I came to terms with my true feelings for her and finally ditched her and this song truly explains my feelings to the tee.
I can't really explain it, as I was immensely attracted to her physically, but even despite the almost devotional admiration she heaped on me, she still means nothing to me. In the end, she was a grossly insecure and unhappy person and I played on her insecurities by feigning my feelings. I feel guilty about that, just like the protagonist in this song seems to. |

"The song is not about celebrating the vacuousness of idle teen Euro-louts... it's a melancholic observation of a middle aged man who no longer understand his surroundings and, in particular, can no longer communicate with with his son who IS a shallow product of the times.
The second verse deliberately blurs the narrative's POV between the father and son; the third verse is about the son. The chorus is... irony and loss.

Could it be about rape? Most of the lyrics seem to fit - one of my best friends recently confessed that she was raped by a friend a while back and when I listened to this song afterwards, I was surprised. The evil rapist with the dark eyes and the cold hands, burning the victim's soul...all those years ago.
"This is a place where in the end, it happens in our world within" is more abstract. I think it describes how the victim would see it as a rape that has just happened (a bad thing), in her "world", but that the rapist (in his world) obviously sees it as a normal thing.
The title "Ultraviolence" seems to fit the idea too. Of course it may well be about domestic violence, or drugs, or anything else in that vein, but the song will always remind me of rape and my friend's horrible experience. |

To me the song is about death. Taken on face value, the singer could maybe have been responsible for somebody's death, or "drowning" as it were.

Just before I moved away to Australia, this girl who I had known and been friends with for a few months (and had feelings for) confessed that she had feelings for me too. It really messed me up and I was at a total loss as to what to do - waste the opportunity of my life and leave it behind for Oz, or stay behind for her, leaving my family in the process.
By coincidence, my friend sent me Get Trashed at pretty much the exact same time this happened and the song immediately stuck with me and has ever since. Especially the "Your confusion's got me so confused" line (she was deeply confused about whether to go out with me or not), plus the fact that I tend to drink a lot anyway to drown my sorrows.
Of course, the proper meaning is slightly different as has been explained already, but the song is special to me for the reasons above. Seeking solace in getting trashed. |
