Fear – New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones Lyrics 19 years ago
to me, this song means that New York's alright if you like saxophones.

Cursive – The Lament of Pretty Baby Lyrics 19 years ago
okay, I think I'm going to clear this up (finally). Domestica is a concept album and the repeated motif of "the moon has raped me" is an allusion to the themes of a relationship's hidden violences coming to the surface during its painful dissolution. the moon here is a literaryl device, a metonymy implying jealousy, as the moon is illuminated through reflected sunlight.

thus, the line "the moon has raped me" is meant to communicate the ugly feelings of jealousy and resentment and the anger therein of the album's speakers (a theme that recurs throughout the album, most notably on "Making Friends and Acquaintances").

"Sweetie, the moon has raped me --
It has left its seeds like a tomb inside me
So I must learn to abort these feelings
This romance is bleeding..."

GG Allin – Bite It You Scum Lyrics 19 years ago
the etymology of the word "punk" is rooted in prison lexicon. a punk, by definition, is a guy at the bottom of the prison food-chain, a guy who allows himself to be so debased that he winds up immune and outside of the system. GG Allin is the definition of the punk philosophy. his stage show wasn't theatrical, it wasn't fun, and his music was beside the point - GG was a punk, perhaps the truest since Iggy Pop.

"If I could, I'd make up a world as foggy as I feel, and tender as a nerve."

what a perfect image.

The Promise Ring – My Life Is At Home Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. I kind of scratched my head at this record when it first came out but the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. Davey's definitely a great poet.

Richard Hell And The Voidoids – Blank Generation Lyrics 19 years ago
does anyone know if the so-called "Blank Generation" of American novelists in the 1980s (best represented by Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho and Less Than Zero) is named for this tune?

The Adverts – Gary Gilmore's Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm surprised no one's commented on this song. lyrically, it's a grim fantasy about receiving a corneal transplant from executed killer Gary Gilmore who, following a murderous binge, begged for death and was the last man to be killed by Utah's firing squad. musically, it's the Yardbirds "For Your Love" and, in many ways, is the best summation of the punk rock spirit: a nod to the style of earlier rock, updated and re-contextualized with a particularly virulent lyrical nihilism. truly brilliant.

Braid – Killing A Camera Lyrics 19 years ago
hey B. that comment is over two years old so if I were you, I'd chill out. granted, I still haven't heard any of those bands but I still stand by my previous statement because, honestly, it's hard to imagine a guy who's most stand-out contribution to Braid was some guitar noodling and frequent interjections of "YEAH!" carrying a band on his own. I wasn't even levelling an insult at Broach, I was simply trying to stick out for Hey Mercedes who, in my OPINION, pick up on the more anthemic qualities of what made Braid great and run with them. besides, Braid is back together and it's sort of a dead issue, isn't it? so I think your comments and insults are not only unwarranted but serve the sole purpose of making you look like a dick. and nobody loves an assholes.

p.s.
my friend knows Chris Broach and from what I hear, he's a colossal prick, which makes sense, seeing as how he's among your favorite musicians - I think the two are related, hmm? consider it.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Soma Lyrics 20 years ago
I think you're all off with this Brave New World junk. I remember interviews from back in the day where Billy stated that he doesn't think too hard about his titles, that he just does a six degrees of separation and chooses titles according to association or whatever sounds cool. just take the song as it is: an epic meditation on disengagement and the end of a relationship.

Ben Folds Five – Barrytown Lyrics 21 years ago
also a Steely Dan cover...the whole soundtrack to "Me, Myself, and Irene" is comprised of Steely Dan covers. This song and Brian Setzer's version of "Bodhisattva" are quite good but the majority of the rest suck ass. for example, Smashmouth's cover of "Do It Again" was so terrible that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker refused to let the singer and guitarist from Smashmouth in to a Steely Dan show.

Ben Folds Five – She Don't Use Jelly (Flaming Lips cover) Lyrics 21 years ago
yup, Ben Folds Five covered the Flaming Lips. their version can be found on the "Lounge-a-Palooza" comp, I believe. and as you'd expect, it's quite good. Ben Folds Five has done a bunch of cover songs and they've done justice to every single one of them. such a great band, it's sad they had to go and break up.

Braid – Killing A Camera Lyrics 21 years ago
yeah, I agree...I appreciate Chris Broach's musical and lyrical contributions to Braid but I can't imagine him carrying a whole band on his own.
Perhaps I'll check out some Burning Airlines in the future. I've heard some Jawbox stuff but that was a long while ago. From what I remember, it was pretty good.

Braid – Killing A Camera Lyrics 22 years ago
"if you're gonna love the seed, you gotta at least appreciate the flower"...couldn't have stated it any more eloquently myself, Le NIghtingale.
It's interesting, too, for that matter that there is a cadre of detractors who would assert that Braid blatantly ripped off bands like Jawbox and Burning Airlines. Me, I've never really bothered to listen to either of J. Robbins' projects so I couldn't say.

Fairweather – Whatever It Takes Lyrics 22 years ago
I wasn't debating Fairweather, xbrowneyedgirlx...I was challenging Dashboard Confessional's undeserved status as the premier ambassador of the "emo" sound to the mainstream masses. I love Fairweather, their record moves me to tears and also makes me wanna jump up and down and rage like I'm at a cathartic hardcore show so they were never in question.

The Promise Ring – Forget Me Lyrics 22 years ago
I don't know how it relates to the themes of the song either but you can't deny that Davey is alluding to that poem all over the album, from the lines I pointed out in this song to the "Polish towns in German tongues...he thought every Russian was you" line in "A Broken Tenor". However odd the juxtaposition may be, I really like it. The first two Promise Ring albums seem almost conceptual in their lyrical repetition of certain lines, images, and themes. I feel a bit saddened by their sacrifice of that element in their more recent works which, apparently, reflect an interest in a more pop direction.

Far – Nestle Lyrics 22 years ago
yeah, I definitely feel that...it's from the perspective of a guy who grew up with an absentee father, worrying that he'll end up quite the same (" When I stared this, I was thinking of my Father
Now a holy ghost
Now see one become the other
One become me")
and, in the choruses, sounding the resolve that he's determined not to ("Nestle, I won't ever let you go").

The Promise Ring – Emergency! Emergency! Lyrics 22 years ago
yeah, seriously...I think this song has the best chorus the Promise Ring has ever written. it's so catchy and I love the single-note guitar riff and the chord progression underneath it. so rockin'

Better Than Ezra – Rosealia Lyrics 22 years ago
wow, I can't believe nobody's commented on this one yet! this song has such great lyrics. I really think this is a cool song, an interesting story about a woman fleeing an abusive relationship in the middle of Carnivale.

Hey Mercedes – Que Shiraz Lyrics 22 years ago
I believe "que shiraz" is Portugese for "what will be"...and an obvious reference to the pop standard "Que Sera".

Braid – Killing A Camera Lyrics 22 years ago
I don't know why everyone trashes on Hey Mercedes so much...it pisses me off. Chris Broach left - at least the rest of the group had the integrity to honor that by not calling the band Braid when they regrouped. And my guess is that the people who rag on Hey Mercedes so much are either ignorant emo newcomers who can't reconcile their Saves The Day records with the more mature and articulate Hey Mercedes or snobby punk purists who think that a hefty recording budget is a mortal sin. I think in a scene full of look-alike sound-alike bands, Bob Nanna and co. deserve massive props for keeping their sound fresh and unique while not capitalizing on their lucrative legacy with the late, great, lamented Braid. consider that and then try and tell me that Hey Mercedes are a bunch of sell-outs.

Scott Weiland – Desperation #5 Lyrics 22 years ago
it IS about drug use...I read an interview with Scott from shortly after this album came out and he said that he wrote and demoed this song within hours of leaving detox. he was all strung out on methadone, slurring his words, barely able to sing and play and that's how he wrote the song.

Pixies – Letter To Memphis Lyrics 22 years ago
I believe Frank Black himself said this song was about past-life regression. go figure.

Pixies – La La Love You Lyrics 22 years ago
I just want to say, for the record, that SmashMouth blatantly ripped the guitar riff in the verse of their song "When The Morning Comes" from the Joey Santiago lead line in the verse of this song.

Pixies – The Sad Punk Lyrics 22 years ago
I read an interview with Frank where he said it was about how ridiculous the punk rock scene was, how rigid scenesters are about "selling out" and what's hip...I guess he was just making fun of punk kids, which is always fun cuz they set themselves up for it so easily

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics 22 years ago
it's not like it either..."Animals" was the Orwellian piece. "The Wall" is a rock opera that fuses the personalities of Syd Barret and Roger Waters into this psychologically damaged pop star who goes all neo-Nazi like Bowie...it's psychological rock opera, a commentary on the dehumanizing nature of entertainment, and a snide swipe at rock and roll fans in general (hence Pink's abuse of his audience - Roger had an idea that rock audiences LIKED being abused and grew to hate arena shows in the years prior to The Wall)

submissions
Flickerstick – Beautiful Lyrics 22 years ago
that's not part of "Beautiful", it's the intro to "Sorry, Wrong Trajectory"....totally different songs but I get the sense that they're companion pieces in that they have the same chord progression and a similar melody.

Peter Gabriel – Red Rain Lyrics 22 years ago
It's less social and much more psychological than that - I remember reading somewhere that this song is based on the writings of early psychoanalyst Carl Jung.

The Promise Ring – Forget Me Lyrics 22 years ago
how clever - a song full of allusions to Sylvia Plath's "Daddy". how they work within the context of a love song escapes me, though - the poem is about a woman with an Electra complex and an explicit desire to commit symbolic patricide in order to lift the oppressive legacy of her father from her shoulders. only Davey could get away with something like that, I suppose.

submissions
The Promise Ring – Miette Lyrics 22 years ago
I love this song...I really like the way that the e-bow guitar texture paints the sleepy shadows in a reflection of the lyrical content. even though Davey only sings the first line ("some night's my room's dark"), it's ok because the music completes the thought beautifully.

R.E.M. – Nightswimming Lyrics 22 years ago
I know what this song's about...I read a book about R.E.M. and, in their early Athens days, everybody would be so hyped up after an R.E.M. show that the band and a bunch of random fans and girlfriends would find a pool or pond and go skinny-dipping together. it's pretty simple, I suppose - Michael Stipe recalling fondly the band's idyllic beginnings in a southern college town.
