It sounds more like a song about two friends who have a strong sexual tension between them but is never actualized.

-- Seems to set up the relationship as a man with feelings toward a female friend.

But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind
-- He's not certain of what to do so he makes himself hard to contact even though he thinks about her a lot.

Well I tried to fake it, I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it
-- He's confessing his love to her. Although its unlikely, he's begging for a chance just to know that he wasn't totally wrong about everything.
Finally, "Sister Golden Hair surprise" seems to say a close friend with blond hair who he surprisingly fell for. Or maybe its all about priesthood like synthwrr said. |

To me, this song is talking about someone who loves someone else but can't/can never have them. The person who is in love dreams about the other person and knows that they are just lies. They say that you'll die faster than without water talks about how painful love can be and how infatuation can destroy someone.
But at the same time, all they have are the dreams of the person. So they want to dream. Heres the sun, its alright means that you wont have to worry about sleeping and heres the moon, its alright means that you can finally be with that person.
...Kind of makes the song depressing, sorry. |

Actually, this does sound a lot like The Lord of The Rings from Sauraman the White. Except for the final line.
"when you find your servant is your master" Sauraman was the master.
The_Soul, your idea is good but I think that it's too metaphorical. I know that Sting is a deep guy but that's really stretching it. However, I have nothing better so I'll just nod my head in agrement. |

In the Stop Making Sense DVD, David Byrne said that the song is about a serial killer that finds himself very sophisticated but he just loses control once in awhile. "look at me, i can speak french. im intelligent." is what the serial killer is trying to say...errr..David Byrne is trying to project. but hell, let it mean whatever you want. thats music |

With me being the Norse Mythology buff that I am, I realized that the song doesn't have anything to do w/LoTR. Instead it's about Ragnarok, the final battle before the end of the world and the world is re-born. The news that must get through is the war starting. They hold no quater is in reference to the fact that all of the warriors under Odin's command leave Valhalla and begin to fight. No quater meaning that they have no place to stay. The snow talks about the three ice-ages that fall upon the world before Ragnarok starts. Finally, the part about death walking next to them goes to the Valkyries that pick up fallen warriors. As much as any of us like LoTR here, this song is not about it. Sorry to disapoint. |
