You guys missed the references to addiction/alcoholism all over this damn album eh? He doesn't want to repeat the addictions of his family.. I guess you could read really deeply into it and find some even more emo "this song so relates to me" meaning but..

I'm a bit late to the party but I just had a thought on the line:
"an empty fate just means an even score"
In religion fate/destiny is predetermined by God. Perhaps, the empty fate is a result of lack of showing faith/doing anything for a God? "I did nothing for God so I was handed an empty fate." that type of thing?
I have no idea, but that could be a possibility...

JeffKaos71 - Basically, what they're trying to get at is.. if you're an entirely good person, why would god punish you? The common Christian response to this is that "God tests us." Well these worst case scenarios are like, why the FUCK would "God" punish someone that seemingly hasn't done anything wrong. In this situation, strongly religious people tend to look to God even more for help/answers... From a logical point of view, it's totally insane to put so much faith in a god that would do that to you. |

First off, why has nobody commented on this song yet? This is by far the best Five For Fighting song. If you haven't heard it, I definitely recommend buying the album or downloading it or whatever you have to do. This song is pretty amazing. I think this song just rocks first off... There are many ways this song could be taken, and I think the song says it all. I really like the guitar part and during the bridge or whatever when the singer kind of just speaks the lyrics, I think that's pretty tight. He's got an awesome voice...

As much as some people.. like 5ra think, depression sometimes isn't just 'having shit on your mind' sometimes it's because of a chemical imbalance in your brain.. if you're seriously feeling suicidal and it's not just 'i feel sorry for myself' type stuff.. then you should talk to any doctor, or psychologist.. been down this road before.. cut my wrists and stuff messed up my guitar playing and typing because of it. Good song, but anyone seriously considering their own death really needs to seek some help, they can give you talk-therapy, medication(non mood-altering and non-habitforming) and over time .. it takes like a month, it can bring you back to happy.. then eventually you can get off of them.. not to preach in here, but depression and suicide aren't too cool and/or funny. ANyway, good song ;) |

Alcohol is just as much a drug as anything else. I don't personally use drugs or condone the use of drugs per se, but what a great point... Alcohol causes more deaths than most if not all other drugs, yet it's a mainstay in western culture?! Anyway, heh, I also don't really say that people shouldn't drink, my point is though -- if i can drink why can't I buy some methamphetamine or something at the store? It's not any worse for me... Yeah, this is very surprising nobody has commented on this really, less than I'd expect. Soul Doubt is underappreciated but very very true, if you didn't catch it by reading the name, it's a very obvious synonymical pun for "sold out." Very very cool if you ask me, especially the cool chorus type thing with layered singing. |

Fat Mike does know who wrote this song, it is Frank Sinatra indeed whoever said that. I first heard the song by Frank Sinatra and love the cover, it's very cool. If you buy "45 or 46 that weren't good enough to go on the other albums" by Nofx, the liner notes have a summary of all of the songs, and it points out that it's awesome to cover a Frank Sinatra song that nobody knows because you get credit for it ;-). |

Let me start off by saying I'm personally offended at the comments made by sincerelyme96 and rainydayboy. Yes, punks and hippies do share similarites. Fat Mike only makes fun of people who he has clear reason to make fun of, but let me clarify a few small things. To put this into comparison with anything else, I need to go back a little into American history... throughout history there have been groups and individuals who hate each other because of their similarities. Example, Malcom X and Martin Luther King jr., though they both supported one cause -- they went about it VERY differently, one through civil disobedience, one through outright violence. To call punks and hippies similar has some truth but is also different, I cut my hair.. it's blue, i am NOT dirty, I don't do drugs very often if at all... and I don't dress like a freak(not even in a 'punk' way.) Hippies go at similar causes (i.e. protesting) in VERY different ways and to be compared is almost offensive. |

Yeah, as several people said, this song is about Jerry Garcia's death and how it was a sort of victory for the punk community (those of us/them that hate hippies anyway.) Yes, Mike did screw up the date, Garcia died August 9th, and the reason that Mike thought August 8th was the day Jerry Garcia died is because it was the first day of the original Woodstock Music Festival (I believe anyway.) That was listed in the NOFX Q&A at www.nofx.org and Mike just got the dates mixed up, can ya blame the guy? |

Yeah, they have been playing this song for a long time.. i saw them live (the first time) March 27, 2002 and they played it then.. very funny, very true. Awesome stuff. Bush is kind of an incompetent leader. |
