Eurythmics – Anything But Strong Lyrics 2 years ago
It's a relationship gone sad and which is now mired by her partner's use of drugs. She is mildly admonishing her druggie partner: "where is your hope? it's all gone up in smoke". She's just trying her best to keep his head above water, gently talking him out of his bad habits: "hold on to the good things that keep you from falling down"; "what are we really learning when we make the same mistakes?". And yet she herself might well feel powerless to haul him out of the mire, help him fight his addictions and dispel his confusion: "you struggle on and on to find where you belong"

John Wetton – Hold Me Now [*] Lyrics 3 years ago
It's clearly somebody desperate enough that cries out to God, some kind of "de profundis", someone who's desperately craving both acceptance and love from God. An extremely well penned song. Truly beautiful.

Tears for Fears – Suffer The Children Lyrics 3 years ago
Always thought the child in this song is suffering from a dreadful disease, a handicap of some sort, perhaps even a baby with down syndrome, because of the lines "and it's so unfair..when you gave him his life" and "but the pain of birth, what is it worth, when it don't turn out the way it should". And this gives even more meaning to the fact that the child is so dependent on his Mum.

XTC – Pink Thing Lyrics 3 years ago
I am repeating, "Pink thing" is a homophobic song. It's mocking the gay community at large and "pink thing" to me is no clear reference to a penis but to a gay male he is addressing and taking so much pleasure in ridiculing.

XTC – Pink Thing Lyrics 3 years ago
This is clearly a homophobic song! "That man is unfit to enter heaven"; "that man isn't fit to be a father" _ "I want to take you out and show you to the girls"... I'm just wondering if Partridge believes in conversion therapy.....

Freur – The Piano Song Lyrics 4 years ago
This is somebody who knows for certain he's going to die soon and addressing friends and family to come to him and let him speak his last goodbyes to them. what makes me say this are the lines "should fate decide that I disappear" and "when fate is the phone, you take that ticket"

Microdisney – Birthday Girl Lyrics 4 years ago
"Birthday girl" is an affectionate form of address to his mum. I love this song and the obvious contrast between a lively upbeat tune, melody and the rather dark and depressing lyrics which describe a man's life as just one long night.

Tears for Fears – Pale Shelter Lyrics 4 years ago
@[Zegonite:33291] I fully agree. I have just posted a comment and it seems we both have the same interpretation to these lyrics.

Tears for Fears – Pale Shelter Lyrics 4 years ago
This will perhaps read a bit far-fetched or over the top. To me, this song is the expression of disappointment with God, and frustration with God. God does not crack up to his expectations. There is some ambivalence and inconsistency too : “when all the time , you changed my mind”. It is also accusatory : “you don’t give me love, you give me pale shelter, you give me cold hands”. And yet “I’m calling you, I ask for more and more”. To me, the ambivalence is evinced by the contradictory lines: “I’m calling you” + “I thought you had it all” and “when all I want to be is completely in command”. And to be completely in command means to break from God, put an end to a tense and fraught relationship with God, and be the perfect master of his own life or destiny.
