I\'m reading all of these comments and they all are very wrong. Ville once said right before performing this song that it was self explanatory then said "You can\'t build a fortress out of tears can you". I\'m still not 100% on whether Ville is talking to a love interest or whether he\'s talking about himself when he repeats the word \'you\'. The more I read his lyrics, the more I\'m convinced Ville is referring to himself, how he\'s either referring to all the hurt he\'s experienced in past relationships combined or he\'s talking about one recent relationship that\'s been the final nail in the coffin for him, so he decides to build a metaphorical emotional fortress in order to protect his heart from any more hurt because he can\'t take much more - "No-one can free you now, from these chains around your heart" and "This fortress of tears I\'ve built from my fears for you". A fortress is something meant to be safe and secure to protect against enemies but he says its built " ...of tears from my fears ..." so he\'s in a lot of emotional pain, so much so he\'s built a wall around himself in order that he doesn\'t get hurt again because he\'s extremely fragile. Where he goes onto say "...Just dive in this emptiness and hold your breath on your way down" Ville is admitting defeat and giving into his hurt because he feels its the only way - "Just hold your breath on your way down" i.e just grin and bear it, drown in the emptiness you are feeling, become immersed in it. The song is really saying he\'s using his pain and emotions, the very things that are hurting him to try to protect him, but we know you can\'t do that l, which is why he says you can\'t build a fortress out if tears - you can\'t build something strong from something so fragile. |

I actually disagree with everyone here. He's clearly speaking about a past relationship that has recently broken up - he's saying they were both invested in the relationship and although he can pinpoint a few things that were the cause of the relationship going south, they both don't know why it didn't work out and how to make it better. We know it's not him talking about something that has yet to happen because he says "Ashamed are the shattered REMAINS of promises made" , so obviously they both had high hopes for this relationship and they both made promises and plans for the future but something destroyed it, and to this day although he mentions "fazed by the envy and greed" - of wanting more, it's still confusion because he doesn't know what went wrong... sweet pandemonium |

Clearly, this song is about a woman who jumps from relationship to relationship (you don't have to live like a refugee - refugee's move around a lot) because she's paranoid as she's got hurt in the past (Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some) but with her current relationship she doesn't seem to want to try hard to make it work. (Tell me why you want to lay there and revel in your abandon) so Tom is saying to her that everyone has gone through difficult relationships, but that doesn't mean you should give up (Everybody's had to fight to be free, You see you don't have to live like a refugee) |
