Lover of music in many styles but favorite is the 80's. I'm a very curious individual whom loves getting to know people & discovering how they became the person they are today. This is what lead me here seeking understanding to song writers lyrics.

@[DarkPoo:31062] Hey there.. Back again to say that I did really enjoy Scandal's version! I always did enjoy Scandal which is why I decided to check it out & thrilled I did. I also found out & figured I'd share the info. (Whether you see this ever or not.. * shrugs shoulders.. * lol) But? I guess Journey sold the song to Scandal in 1984 which they released on their Warrior album. Which I liked but can't believe never heard them sing Only The Young.. Anyhow, ... Journey also recorded & released the song & Scandal was given a large settlement in the legal aftermath. Figured I'd share this interesting little tidbit as I was clueless to all this myself.

@[jetstarjon:31061] Hi ya! I did read about this but what I read what that the song came 1st then the band had met this teenage boy.. I'm posting what I read for you and others to read so all can read into it whatever ones mind leads them to believe. Just wanted to share so that whomever (like me) really wants to understand the lyrics can read the best of what I have found at this time. What I read starts here: ***** The first individual outside the band to hear the song was sixteen-year-old Kenny Sykaluk of Rocky River, Ohio, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. His mother wrote a letter to the band telling them about her son's terminal condition, and how big a fan he was of Journey. The band flew to his hospital bedside in Cleveland, Ohio at the request of the Make a Wish Foundation. Along with a Walkman containing the new track, the band also brought Kenny a football helmet signed by the San Francisco 49ers and an autographed Journey platinum record award. The experience of playing the song for Kenny left Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain deeply affected. Perry said, "As soon as I walked out of the hospital room, I lost it. Nurses had to take me to a room by myself." On the band's episode of VH1's Behind the Music, Cain broke down in tears recalling the event, remarking that "children should not have to live with that kind of pain". Kenny died the next day, with the Walkman still in his hand. The song brought life into perspective for the band and left them humbled. Neal Schon said that Kenny's death affected Journey by making them re-evaluate the issues that were causing friction inside the band itself. In honor of Kenny Sykaluk, the band used the song as their opener for the Raised on Radio Tour.*****

@[matt1966:31060] .. As for the song, I'm not completely sure what everything means but do agree it's about kids somewhere in their early to later teens. Just wanted to say that I'm very sorry for what upbringing lead you to end up with the loss of a loved one at such a young age. I also hope you have been able to find peace for YOURSELF via forgiving your (mother/father and or other.) I can relate to parents raising kids that should NEVER been able too.. God Bless

@[AnotherBrick:31059] Well 22 years old is not old however? In a blink you'll be 32 and then 42 and then... Lol, well you get it.. It's all good! But if a song makes you feel old, sad or otherwise down, I suggest you change the channel, CD, Video or whatnot to something that makes ya jump around and feel great! No time to be down! :) Age is but a #.... Seriously!

@[cropduster:31058] I completely agree! And of course I would because I was in my 1st "puppy love" relationship 1986/87 @ 16 1/2 yrs old. Journey's Greatest Hits Album brings me to my knees (emotionally not literally) no matter which song. Teen years are soooo awesome & packed with grand memories.. (For most..) May we all be able to remember our memories & smile about them in the future. :o)

@[DarkPoo:31057] Thanks for mentioning this as I have never heard that version and I'm going to check it out now.. However? Journey's Greatest Hits album holds WAY to much meaning and memories for me to ever think another version of this song (let alone any other) is better. Just my personal pref. Thx again!

@[Sojus:15050] .. I went back and was rereading what you wrote and I thought you were speaking of Bipolar Disorder and Narsasissiam. But I see you said Borderline Personality Disorder/ Narsasissiam... I just had to say I think my sister may have been diagnosed wrong. But still.. Thanks again for sharing! Love a good read! :) TC

@[Sojus:15049] ~ Very very well said! As a daughter of a narcissistic mother and a sister to my best friend and enemy at times, my younger sister who is bipolar, I can concur and say everything you've said is 100+% correct! I have always referred to my sisters love life as 1 big crazy soap! She has 2 to 4 men that at one time she said, "This it! I have truly found the love of my life!.." 2 she married. Both she divorced. Went back to previous b/f SHE broke up with but of course this was as temporary as the next relationship she ran back too. (One of the 2 x hubby's.) And the cycle continues and repeats just as you said. (With the same partners.) I see the narsasisstic traits in my sis but not as bad as our mother. Either way, makes it hard to be close to either as their lives are toxic. My mother and I are done as for sis, I can tolerate her at this time and love her dearly so I will go on to continue to hope for growth, medication help or a straight up miracle. ... Best wishes to all in similiar situations. .

@[most_wretched:15048] ~

Not sure what your meaning is behind "for an atheist."? What would one expect had they asked an "atheist songwriter" to write a song about their thoughts on
death/dying? "For an atheist" (IMO), the song is clear and understandable. However,
For this "Christian listener," it's sad and leaves me concerned for the songwriters soul. Beautiful music & have liked song since I was a teen in the 80's. But I thought it was about a break-up. NOT until today 8/9/16, did I realized the meaning after looking up the lyrics. <3 Wishin' ya'll love & eyes 2 see with - and ears to hear.. <3
