The Silver Jews – Random Rules Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't know much about David Berman, but I know he's had struggles with drugs. The first verse, however, reminds me SO MUCH of my brother's struggles with bipolar mania. When in a manic state, "random" does rule, and the person believes they ARE approaching perfection, and can also be hyper sexual. The third line, about the infrared deer and digital snake is a mystery to me. The fourth line reminds me of how the heavy doses and powerful medications they put my brother on when he was hospitalized would actually make it hard for him to shake hands or interact with other people in general.

I've got nothing to add on the second verse, but the third verse almost surely refers to Stephen Malkmus of Pavement, who was also a founding member of Silver Jews (along with Bob Nastanovich) and is playing guitar in this song. I wondered if the "black colored roads" was also a reference to P/pavement (after all that is the literal definition of what 'pavement' is).

Awesome song. Somehow seems it could be a companion to "Range Life."

Pavement – Black Walls Lyrics 8 years ago
Version I heard:

Black Walls:

I've been to the desert on a horse with no name
He came in many colors, but he always looks the same

Its
Black Walls (x6)

Well everybody's got one that they can't see
Well the cans in the kitchen and its starting to breathe.

Well
Black Walls (x6)

You shouldn't hate your body
'Cause it's a part of you
You shouldn't hate your family
It's a part of you
You shouldn't hate your neighbors
Its part of YOU!

Black Walls (x10)

Pavement – Feed Them to the 5 Lions (Linden) Lyrics 8 years ago
@stickie pants Thanks for that info. I saw a pic of Gary Young with a Linden hat on, now that is explained. For people who aren't diehard fans, malkmus and kannberg grew up in Stockton. Just in case anyone reads this.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Real Emotional Trash Lyrics 8 years ago
I kind of wondered if this wasn't a reflection on what it's like living with 3 women (wife and two little girls). That's my current situation also and let me tell you, daddy's on the run, because there is a ton of Real Emotional Trash in my household :-)

@[C:9350]. V. Catullus I wondered if the line: "The band became a picture frame surrounding the vision he dreamt" was a bit of a shot at SM's old bandmates in pavement.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Church on White Lyrics 8 years ago
http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2001/04/01/stephen-malkmus-being-stephen-malkmus/

Aside from a bit of strained small talk, my first half hour or so in the company of one of indie rock’s most acclaimed wordsmiths is spent in silence, watching him clean out his trunk. A soggy copy of an old income-tax form. A Thin Lizzy album. A rumpled suit bag and battered dress shoes, probably last worn to the funeral of his friend Robert Bingham (author of a collection of short stories called Pure Slaughter Value and heir to a publishing fortune). Bingham died from a heroin overdose in the fall of 1999. “I don’t think he was really that into it,” Malkmus will tell me later. “I think he just tried it with this girl … ” The rest of the thought trails off to protect the privacy of the dead.

There’s a song on Malkmus’ self-titled solo album called “Church On White.” It’s prime Malkmus. He sounds sad-eyed and shattered, and the guitars clang languidly, loping along in figure-eights of resignation and regret. It ends with a tolling passage that closes the lid on the final chorus before flaming out in a wailing-wall guitar solo. If every Pavement song was about thinking, this song is about feeling. “Church On White” is about Bingham. He used to live at the intersection of Church and White streets in New York City.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Jenny and the Ess-Dog Lyrics 8 years ago
I always though Malkmus was the "S" dog. This writer agreed:

http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2001/04/01/stephen-malkmus-being-stephen-malkmus/

(This is the part of the story that’s in parentheses. It’s just a theory, and Malkmus, notoriously reluctant to reveal himself in his songs, would never admit this, but I think the song “Jenny & The Ess-Dog” from his solo album is really about their relationship. Some of the names have been changed, but you don’t need a secret decoder ring to figure out who the “S” Dog is. Even though the facts have been disarranged—“She’s a rich girl, he’s the son of a Coca-Cola middleman”—the song has the same vibe Malkmus and Larimer give off when they’re together. It sounds like summer, like falling in love. It’s the catchiest song he’s written since “Cut Your Hair.”)

back to my thoughts:
SM is the son of an insurance salesman. He says he never writes anything literal, but that's not far off.

@[shejustwantstorock:9214] Maybe the title is a reference to Malkmus being about to go solo. Pavement was "the minor leagues" and he is looking forward to the "major leagues" that will be his solo career.

Pavement – Painted Soldiers [#] Lyrics 8 years ago
Based on the video that is on YouTube, which appears official, this song is about Malkmus kicking/forcing Pavement co-founder Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs) out of Pavement. But that doesn't happen for another 3 years or so. I was wondering if "painted soldiers" was a known idiom or saying. I also wondered where this song appears. I'm guessing a b side to a single or compilation album somewhere. I wondered if the song caused more friction between SM and SS. This seemed like a direct shot at Malkmus:

Why'd you have to say those things
About my faults, about my sting?
I didn't want things to end this way
I didn't want things to end this way.

All my soldiers are painted
And I'm one of them,
But I'm still dedicated
To seeing...

I knew he liked to talk about himself
But he wanted the whole world to know.
It made me sick inside...
I just gotta hold back.

Sebadoh – Flame Lyrics 8 years ago
@[doorman666:9209] I read somewhere on YouTube that "Flame" is a nickname for a real-life indie-rock groupie that spent time with several indie bands in the US and Canada in the 90's. Knowing that leads to a pretty straightforward interpretation of not wanting to "ride Flame," like other band mates. It fits with the line you reference above quite well. That being said, it could be (and probably is) dual meaning with drugs also.
