Brand New – Mene Lyrics 8 years ago
Okay, here is what I think the song means to Jesse, the lead singer. It has religious metaphor as usual with metaphor being the key word for most of it(meaning it largely has nothing to do with religion). Notice how much of the time he references religion it is to get an entirely unrelated point across(seen in the songs 'jesus christ', all throughout the albums 'devil and god are raging inside of me' and 'daisy')

Anyways, on to the song. I firmly believe it is about how the band itself is coming to an end, with small bits relating where Jesse now stands with the whole religion thing. He has been quoted as saying he wont be doing this(Brand New) when he is 40, and he is 37, he's married now and wanting to focus on that. He has also stated that he has a hard time playing their first album, and parts of the second one because he wrote them back when he was a college student and simply doesnt feel/relate to them as he once did, but since it is what he wrote and what fans want to hear he must play them to an extent(which he see's as his own fault). I'll put this into context with the lyrics now.

"How does everything start and end?
Come gather now, and lay this beast to rest
I kept hearing trumpets, got my hearing checked" He is setting up the song and bluntly putting it out there that everything does have a start and an end, whether its wanted or not. The last line refers to how after daisy they were thinking it may be the end only to make one more cd(hearing trumpets symbolize the end times)
He is possibly alluding to old age in the last line, like if he tried to keep the band alive too long they would pass their prime and be one of those bands of now old men that are somewhat embarrassing in relation to their good days(like mick jagger, paul mccartney).

"My father spoke of prophecy
To think that I believed is self-centered of me.
There was something I was trying to say,
but then I choked on it and now it's gettin' kinda late"
This would be the part that relates his stance on religion(as he does on most records), and his coming to terms/admittance that he believed because it served some selfish purpose for him(dead loved ones werent just dead, or that theres something after death, etc.) He doesnt feel relieved by not believing anymore because of others who still believe and would be bothered by it, so he doesnt mention it too them. He also perhaps doesnt want to be the cause for others disbelieving and realizing they were living a selfish lie most of your life(a huge blow to the ego at minimum).

"We walked to the edge but we never leapt
What sings to you when you disconnect?" Pretty forward, they almost ended it after daisy but didnt. Then he is using double meaning and saying with this massive disconnect from previous beliefs he finds inspiration hard(nothing sings to him), and he feels he cant relate to some of his previous songs and hence doesnt want to play them(so what sings to you then?)

"Written on the wall, letters plain and tall
This is my own fault, we don't feel anything"the first line is the title of the song in long form. He is referring to all of the signs about the coming end to brand new, but also to his own lyrics(written for the world to see on walls all over the internet) which he wrote in a way that was very acute to how he once felt rather than timeless lyrics(like those in later albums), hence making him disconnected and unable to feel them. He blames himself for having to play them night after night for years after they stopped being relevant to him since they were his creation

"I still cower in eternal wrath, though
Don't want my fear to become my shadow
I want to invade my thoughts, I wanna die in Kyoto." He's thinking about what if he is wrong to not believe, but doesnt let the fear dictate his mind or choices anymore. He could be reffering to not letting his desire for immortality(by leaving a legacy) become his shadow, meaning that he wont be an old man in a band that is only remembered for that, and that he wants to off time to invade his thoughts, to live and die where he chooses, and to instead focus on what matters in life(wife, family)

"The ocean never sleeps or dreams,
and never stops to ponder what it sees
Committed to it's satellite,
no one can move you, man, and no one's ever going to try.
All the tides are married to the moon.
All I want is for my heart to be as true."
My favorite part, he is pretty forward and easy to understand here. He doesnt want to want or dream for anything because he has his satellite(wife, life,) and doesnt want anyone to question his commitment which they would if he was always out touring and 'sleeping' on the job of being a husband. He is set in his decision.(good for him)

"Not gone but fading fast so let me put to rest
The only question that you'll ask: We don't feel anything"
They arent dead yet, they still have a cd to drop(they have it already recorded, its just being decided n whats being released and whats not) but they are coming to an end relatively quickly as after they do a tour for the cd that'll propably be it for Brand New. People are surely going to ask why and Jesse Lacey doesnt like talking about his band or personal life, or answering asinine questions(much less repeatedly) so this song is him giving his interview and is the band answering why its the end. They dont feel anything.

theres some obvious irony in making a song about no longer making songs, but it also takes a good amount of honesty. leave it to Brand New to be the ones to pull it off lol
