LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is nostalgic, plain and simple.

It's about reminiscing about the memories and times that mattered in your life all while embracing the fact that you've built a home that you can, well, come home to. It's about the balance between responsibilities and doing what you actually want to do in life. The progression of the song hints that James is telling us to live life to the fullest while we can, before the age and responsibilities begin to catch up to us.

>>
We set controls for the heart of the sun
One of the ways we show our age
<<

A reference to Pink Floyd. Instant nostalgia if you know your classics - you need to make the most out of your time and potential memories to come. Setting controls for the heart of the sun is simply that... focusing everything on the highest energy source possible and keeping it as bright as you can.

>>
You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan
And the next five years trying to be with your friends again
<<

The constant struggle between finding stability while trying to spend time with those you know and love. Time is your only enemy in this life.

>>
I wouldn't trade one stupid decision
For another five years of life
<<

This is commonplace and everyone should feel this way. Without mistakes, life can't flourish. A stupid decision doesn't always end in a stupid result, and by not trading a stupid decision for five years, you can bet your ass it was a worthy stupid decision. Make some stupid decisions, dammit!

>>
When you're drunk and the kids leave impossible tasks
You think over and over, "hey, I'm finally dead."
<<

I'm dead now, I get to revisit my memories and allow my offspring to conjure up their own memories. Finally! I'm glad I took this path and I'm glad I can finally "rest" in peace.

Now go out and make some memories. Challenge yourself and take a risk while you still can. There's a difference between jumping off a bridge without a parachute and jumping off a bridge with one. Both can be considered stupid, but only one guarantees a premature death.

Morphine – In Spite of Me Lyrics 9 years ago
Yeah, I took it in a similar way, as well. He may have shared an experience or words of wisdom with her that no other man ever did before, and only because he felt worthy for her at the time... only to get caught off-guard when she makes a big and randomly falls off the map after developing such a rapid relationship. This is a common theme for many artists, I imagine. The amount of crazy can drive so many faces away.

Also gotta remember that the song was written in the late 80's (I think), so communication was horrendous compared to how information is accessed these days. This is constant food for thought and should be respected; maybe under modern-day circumstances this song would've never been created, but be grateful how easily you can track down and revisit memory lane with an old friend... even if you treat it as a breaching of "privacy."

So badabing, a dent was left in the man's soul as classes divided the couple. Man appreciates the memories but feels sorrow upon revisiting them, aching to the thought of her never coming back like the poor mutt in Futurama.

Harvey Danger – Jack The Lion Lyrics 9 years ago
What a bummer this song burdens my soul with. Sadly I had to deal with this exact process through an alcoholic entity that happened to be my father. He went from being extremely open and bubbly to a limited vocabulary of slewed-together slothful statements.

Luckily he still remembered to tell us how much he loved us before he passed, but it's such a shame to watch someone crumble apart in front of you. His last roars will forever echo in my heart, but I'm glad he's finally swept away from this collision-generated controlled chaos theory we live in today.

Gojira – The Art Of Dying Lyrics 9 years ago
That's a simple but solid interpretation, but you forgot one thing - comparing it to a long suicide isn't the right way to put it. The main difference in a "long suicide" and actual suicide is that the long suicide is full of experiences and memories that make you want to stay alive. Actual suicide doesn't support this and is a temporary state of mind that humans are digging through on a daily basis.

So, everybody is going to die, but everybody is also bound to live a fragment of time within the illusion of time itself. If you realize and acknowledge the temporary existence along with the fact that time is simply an illusion fueling illusions, you embrace the perseverance and effort to get whatever it is your seeking, and look towards the things that truly stand out and matter to you.

Obviously what you prioritize varies, but like I said above, once you truly embrace the fact that life is temporary and everyone will disappear one day (the art of dying), this song could potentially morph into a different title - "The Art of Dying: How I Embraced Life and Summoned the Strength to Prioritize What Truly Matters Around Me".

Gojira is fucking awesome, man.

Tripping Daisy – Miles and Miles of Pain Lyrics 9 years ago
I wonder how many people were in the process of killing themselves and decided to listen to this track one last time, only to find themselves in peace once the track faded out from the speakers.

There's at least one... that's for sure. I'm coming home.
