Coldplay – Clocks Lyrics 7 years ago
@[MaryMaryQuiteContrary:15403] Hm. I really can see where you're going with this interpretation and I like it. There does seem to be a feel of regret, despair, or resignation to the lyrics and melody. A lot of questions are posed either directly or subtly.

@[ShooFlyPie:15402] As an anxious person what you say makes a lot of sense. But the lyrics are so non-literal that I'm not completely convinced. And the sound of the instruments don't really match. I'll have to give it more thought.

Saliva – Always Lyrics 7 years ago
I always thought the part

"I see, the blood all over your hands
Does it make you feel, more like a man
Was it all, just a part of your plan
This pistol's shakin' in my hands
And all I hear is the sound"

was meant to be symbolic. The blood all over the hands refers to the emotional injury of rejection. The pistol shaking refers to the impulse to hurt those who hurt us. He's on the threshold of the decision between lashing out at his love because if the pain caused or simply leaving.

Just because we have been hurt and/or estranged from some one doesn't mean we stop loving them right away, but those things start the decay of such positive feelings. The song shows the conflict in ourselves when we feel that love turn to hate or apathy, even as we try to cling to the notion of loving someone 'Always'.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Little Heaven Lyrics 9 years ago
To me the song is encouraging patience and stoicism. Pretty much, things happen, and we'll do the few things we can about it, but that doesn't mean it is fate, or some big design, or inevitable. Bad things aren't necessarily a punishment. Life is full of change and all we can do is hold onto our hopes and plod on. And the less we fight with each other, and nature, the fewer things there are to be our enemies.

@[sonneeah:1066] I was actually surprised, when I finally looked up the lyrics, that it was not a romantic song. (I used to think the last line was 'I'm not gonna fail this one' as in a relationship). But, despite this, I always see that scene in my mind and I absolutely love the song.

I don't know if I would use the word 'threat', but you and I were thinking along the same lines.

I didn't look it up, so I'm sure the people who mentioned the firefighter are correct, but that doesn't meant it's the only meaning of the song, if that makes any sense. But this is how I see the song.

I get the impression that it is about any voice telling a person what to do, whether it's external or internal conflicts. And because we all have such conflicts, we can't truly know what another person is going through until we are in their shoes, except they are daring further than the shoes, and saying 'wear my soul.'

I think the part about 'paint me on canvas so I can become, what you can never be' is contrasting reality to ideals. A canvas picture can be a snapshot of a person's best moment, and represents an ideal of that person, but it's only a picture, and it doesn't really represent a person's trials or what is in his/her heart.
