Ben Rector – Beautiful Lyrics 10 years ago
He's telling a story.

It's about an older gentleman waking up and starting his day. He starts thinking about his younger days when he was 16 in his beat up car and he had a beautiful girlfriend. I imagine him in his leather jacket holding her hand with the wind in their hair and not a care in the world.

"How do we end up like this?" He's looking at how much the world has changed since he was 16 with his girlfriend and how people don't take time to be with each other and everyone is held up by work and less important things than the ones you love. "While the grass grows green" everyone's inside playing video games and watching tv instead of outside having fun in the sun.

He has another "flashback" to when he was 16. I imagine it's him and this same girl walking through an open field just spending time together because they love each other. I think he says "she was beautiful" over and over again because that's when he really realized how much she meant to him and how beautiful she really was. I imagine he might've proposed to her right there.

When Ben is singing basically a Capella I imagine the old man remembering all the times he had with this beautiful girl. (Their wedding, anniversaries, kids, vacations, graduations, etc.)

"It was you and you were beautiful" I think the old man is standing by his wife's grave and saying that you are still that beautiful girl I knew and that he still loves her and he misses her and he can't wait to see her again one day.
