The Strokes – Between Love And Hate Lyrics 10 years ago
I meant to say "by finding a new girl" in the second to last sentence, which there was an edit post option

The Strokes – Between Love And Hate Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm really surprised, I didn't see any comments mentioning the title of the song, which is sort of the centralized theme here. He's literally between loving and hating this girl, anyone who's ever been in love with someone who has hurt them can relate to that mix of emotions I'm sure.

I believe that this song was about a girl who ended up cheating on the main guy in the song, while he was away. It sounds like the lines:
"Thinking about that high school dance
Worrying about the finals
Yes I know
You're feeling lonely
Oh lonely, so lonely."
Is a conversation between the girl, and the guy she's cheating with (or about to cheat at this "flashback"). She's complaining to him about all her problems, and he took advantage of her vulnerability. She's worried about not having anyone to go to the dance with and everything else that's going on, and the guy she's talking to is the one sympathizing with her about how he knows how lonely she must be.

"Watched her as she wiped her eyes
You don't make me sorry. Now I know
That you never listened - Listen."
I believe this is "present time" in the song, and she's feeding him a sob story about how it wasn't her fault for one reason or another, but she has to leave because there's someone else now. He's not buying her bullshit and the last line must mean he had told her he would be back someday or that he would always love her or something, and he knows she didn't listen because of what she did.

Never needed anybody, I never needed anybody
I never needed anybody, I never needed nobody
Don't worry about it, honey
I never needed anybody
I never needed anybody, it won't change now.

He's mad at her now, he's telling her he never needed anyone, not to worry about it he'll be fine without her.

Am I wrong?
Don't sing along with me.
I said I was fine,
It's just the second time
We lost the war

He's still in love with her, he's starting to doubt himself about being fine on his own, because he still needs her in his life. The bit about "war" i believe is referring to "all's fair in love and war" idea, saying that he's either lost this love twice, or this is the second love he's lost.

She'd be in the kitchen
I would start the fire
Those days are gone
But you know I can't give up - Give up.

He can't stop thinking about the good times he had with this girl, he knows she'd gone but he has to keep trying to get her back.

P.S. if i may ask why
He needs to know why she left him.

When will they get tired
I think this line is him waiting for them to break up so he can be with the girl again

We've stayed up
All night tryin' - Tryin'.
I'm not entirely sure what these lines are about, but I think he might be trying to get over the girl by finding girl, and he's spent so long trying to love her but he can't

These are just my opinions, but that's what I've gathered from listening to this song

So you're saying there has never been a musician from a country other than America that's used slang native to their homeland in a song? I don't believe Julian Casablancas threw that line in this song in out of arrogance, I think he put it in there because it fit with the song. It's not his fault you're uncultured.

Defiance, Ohio – Petty Problems Lyrics 10 years ago
Great song, as "cfonts" touched on, it's pretty much just a song that calls out everyone complaining of "first world problems" ie - problems that aren't really anything to complain about. There's people struggling just to stay fed and stay healthy but we're all (as a whole) so narrow minded we don't think about anyone else's problems for the most part. "There are many kinds of problems, not all of them are like yours or mine, but I forget that all the time"

Defiance, Ohio – The New World Order Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is written from an entirely sarcastic standpoint. In this song, they're talking about how the U.S. Government (represented by Bush) convince the general populous that war is the best thing we can do for the world... when it's obviously not. They're saying the government is getting rich while others suffer "once we've got our yachts and crowns, God plans some food to trickle down"

Basically, they're saying the Government is using religion to turn people against each other, which has happened throughout all of American history. They do this by convincing everyone that it's our religious duties to go to war, convert the world, and take all their resources while we do so.

I've also submitted several corrections to the lyrics

Toh Kay – Tornado Joe Lyrics 10 years ago
What a beautiful cover of an already creative song. Tomas Kalnoky is such a talented musician, turned this upbeat song into one that sent chills down my spine the first time I heard it.

For those that can't figure out what this song is about, I believe it is about someone realizing they would never make anything of themselves, and they had to get out before the "quicksand" of a place swallowed him up along with all the others.

He is apparently talking about California, or somewhere else on the western coast when he said "far left coast" he's talking about western america I believe.

However, the song is also saying that just because that place will lead to a dead end life, doesn't mean that leaving to go somewhere new will solve all of your other problems. He makes this clear in the lines "anxiety can hitch a ride on planes, loneliness travels from state to state" etc.

Alkaline Trio – Maybe I'll Catch Fire Lyrics 10 years ago
Hey guys this will be my first post, however I thought maybe I could offer some of my insight on this song. I haven't seen too many comments touching on what the song is actually about, and the ones that do don't seem to (in my opinion) offer a "full" explanation of the song.

I think the others that have touched on the "depression" of the person in which this song is in the point of view of. This is very true, it is definitely about depression, but I'd even go a bit further and say it's about being depressed about a situation.

The situation in my opinion has to do with drugs of some kind. Alkaline trio are notorious for their drug use metaphors as Matt Skiba (and probably the others that have been in the band) has struggled with drug addiction throughout his life.

To me the lines that make me believe it's someone struggling with addiction are:

"This house is full of ears but I can't talk to anyone
They've heard this one a thousand times"

-He's relapsed on drugs again, and everyone's sick of his shit.

"Most exciting thing I do - hand half way out third floor windows,
maybe throw lit cigarettes down."

-Many harder drug users are compulsive cigarette smokers, and also don't live very fulfilling lives

"And maybe I'll catch fire,"

-suicide is often made glamorous by drugs, and all the problems that come along with addiction as I'm sure anyone else who's experienced the horrors of addiction will tell you

"something warm to hold me,"

-I believe he's referring to heroin, specifically, with this line as heroin makes people feel very warm (and also extremely cold during withdrawals, so the "warmness" of the next high is more noticeable in the midst of addiction, rather than just trying it for the first time you might not notice it)
-However, this line could also be referring to the lack of love he feels in his life, and addiction has tricked him into thinking that drugs is all he needs to fill that void

"something pure to burn away the darkness that hides inside my mind.
All that evil shit's not hard to find"

-He needs something to make him feel better, sometimes suicide seems like the only way out with many serious life problems. The "evil shit" in the next line, I feel is a play on words and can be interpreted two separate ways. He can be referring to the previous line meaning theres so much evil shit in his mind that it isn't difficult to find, or referring to drugs as the "evil shit" saying that drugs are pretty easy to find.

"I guess I only claim to be nice."

-Starting to realize he's not a good person after all, now that he's had time to reflect on everything that he's done and everyone he's hurt with his addiction

"This house is full of eyes but I can't look at anyone
They've seen this face a thousand times"

-same thing as the first line in the first verse, everyone's sick of his shit

"Most relaxing thing I do - hand half way out third floor windows,
and look at rocks if I fall out,"

-contemplating a different form of suicide

"And maybe I'll fall hard,
something tough to break me,
something sharp to rip into my insides and bleed out all that pain."

-He has so many demons inside he just wants to get rid of it all and doesnt care if the only way to accomplish them is by killing himself - hes desperate

"Sorry I don't even know your name"

"I guess for me it's easy this way."

-I'm not really sure what these last two lines could mean, I'm thinking he might be hurting people he doesn't know, like robbing them or stealing from them to support his habit and it's "easier" for him to hurt people he doesn't know personally

-Or he could also actually know the person and he's so messed up on drugs he doesn't realize he know's them, and he's saying it's easier to go through life on drugs

Again, this is all just my opinion but I didn't see anyone else elaboration on the entire song so I thought I'd offer my own interpretation of the song and I would love to hear feedback on my thoughts, and if you prove that I'm wrong - even better!
