There are many different interpretations of the lyrics of this song. The most common is that Drake is singing about his troubles with depression, and the Black Eyed Dog is a manifestation of his mental illness. There is also the possibility that the Black Eyed Dog is just a stray that is begging for food, trying to get home. It is impossible to know the real meanings, as Drake has been dead for decades now. However- Having worked mental health for 16 years I think the possibility that he was writing about his depression is a fair one. I don't know what sort of treatment Drake received back then or if he actually attended any therapy on a regular basis. I do know that one thing we always advised is to keep a journal. This song sounds a lot like Drake turning it into lyrics. Also, I have encountered patients that described their symptoms as something dark that was slowly forming, usually in the corner of their bedroom. You couldn't really see it, but they visualized it like a tangible thing. We will never really know, and it is best to enjoy the song for what it is. It has a good tune, and shows what Drake could have accomplished had he been able to continue recording. For a sad little tune, it is sort of upbeat- not nearly as obviously gloomy as Way To Blue, another favorite of mine. You must hear that one without the orchestra! With just Drake and a backing piano, it is the epitome of feeling down and blue. |

I read somewhere, liner notes in a remastered CD I think, that when this song was written they had no idea what LSD was and were very naive about counterculture. This is their interpretation of the events happening in San Francisco- nobody was quite sure of what was really going on. That is why he used the imagery of a sort of Biplane, and He'll fly his astral plane. He'll take you trips around the bay. He'll bring you back the same day. Not to say that they didn't learn more quickly, as that was the scene then. But at the time the album was more about the current TM fad and meditation. |
