Dire Straits – Ride Across The River Lyrics 10 years ago
This song popped into my head when visiting the sacred valley in Peru, leading to Machu Picchu...the wind instruments and percussion are identical to the sound of native Peruvian musicians. While I agree that the lyrics are portable to any conflict they hit home for me as revealing the conquering of the Incas by the Conquistadors...the noble cause. Plus, the river that runs along the path to Machu Picchu is, at parts, deep and wide....

Neil Young – Powderfinger Lyrics 10 years ago
Of the many Neil tunes I love, this is the best. My read on it is that he's using the Civil War as a metaphor for drug addiction and loss...the powder and the finger. And the guitar solos....just chilling and full of emotion, with the first hint of Neil's use of feedback as an instrument. I never, ever tire of listening to Powderfinger. I saw two shows of the Rust tour and was totally blown away by it the first time...this was long before we knew what songs would be played from internet news. Think of him as one you'd never figure indeed!

Mark Knopfler – Cleaning My Gun Lyrics 10 years ago
My read on this great song is that Knopfler is juxtaposing thoughts of a vet with those of an Irish terrorist, showing their common ground. Tanks vs tire irons....staying below the radar....having a party before they go...all visions that could apply to vets coming from or off to war, or terrorists plotting their attacks. The 'case of old damnation' is genius...it is also "case the whole damn nation" alluding to the terrorist plots. All in all I think this is unsurpassed in the amazing Knopfler catalog...Dire Straits included.
