Don Henley – The Boys of Summer Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is not about a Summer romance. Summer is the time of her life where she is beautiful and desired. He is saying that the Boys of Summer were after her when she was hot but his love was real and would endure. He has great memories of their passion and still loves her but she belongs to the past and he should leave her in the past like the Deadhead should leave the Grateful Dead. "I should just let 'em go"

David Wilcox – The Kid Lyrics 10 years ago
The end of the lovers' tale is that was all in his imagination. When you listen to the song, the music changes mid-verse, and at the same time the lyric goes from reality to the world of imagination. Only in imagination did they get together. Great tune!!

Carole King – Tapestry Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe this song is about reincarnation. The tapestry represents her life. The stranger is someone who at the end of his life was reaching for "something golden" which is the return to the non-physical eastern religion equivalent of heaven. But, he had not reached that level spiritually and began a new cycle as a toad. The figure gray and ghostly is death (dressed in black in times of darkness) and she has mastered life and is ready to make the journey to "heaven"--"my tapestry is unraveling (she's dying), he's come to take me back (to the spiritual world)". I think Pete Townshend's song Drowned is along the same lines.

Jackson Browne – The Fuse Lyrics 10 years ago
A beautiful song, about the faith that overcomes all the uncertainty and anxiety that "strangles the will". The music is haunting and beautifully performed. The shift in the music from the somber minor haunting feel to the uplifting exciting major key is brilliant. The music and lyric find hope and optimism in a climactic moment. JB is one of the greats!!

Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics 10 years ago
This song, to me, is about someone who is trying to live existentially while everyone else is living in their own world-"he knows that all his hopes and dreams begin and end there". He (the pretender) is the brave, lone observer, not allowing himself to give in to the narcissism which he sees all around him. But, finally he gives in as he is not strong enough to watch anymore, so he "surrenders". Similar to Doctor My Eyes-"was I unwise, to leave them open for so long?")

Bruce Springsteen – Highway 29 Lyrics 10 years ago
This is an incredible album for lyrics-some of his best. The events are hard to follow. I think it could be reminiscent of "The occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" in which the character has a hallucination as he's dying. Maybe, "I slept the sleep of the dead" means he died in the motel and what comes after is his experience as he is dying. Clearly, the end describes his death "I was runnin'.. then I was flyin'. The vision of bright light (snow and sky) could be like seeing the light. Just a thought. It is a fascinating lyric.

Bruce Springsteen – Highway 29 Lyrics 10 years ago
Lyrics are written to be communicated and pondered. The theme of the album is late 20th century and how the despair (particularly in the recession beaten California) conjures the ghost of Tom Joad.
