Bright Eyes – Tereza and Tomas Lyrics 19 years ago
Definitely a kundera link...

But I've noticed quite a few book - conor oberst links:

generation x (douglas coupland) - whats new for fall (desparecidos)

for one.

err... can't remember any more now... but they're out there...

Bright Eyes – The Center of the World Lyrics 19 years ago
I think there are two linking themes mixed up here - the loss of a girl and wasting a life, which obviously link up as only realising you wasted yourlife after you lose the girl.

i think, maybe also, realising once someones gone that they weren't everything you help them up to be.

Over-analysing the first paragraph:

I think that 'the statue of a girl' and 'the centre of the world' refer to her opinion of herself/ how he viewed her, ie her being important to him or herself.

'the clumsy form' is obviously self-loathing
'scattered' refers to being dismissed/put down/ignored by her
the beach, the sand is like desert, barren and empty, and i agree with previous comments about the reference to time and millions of grains of sand, ie his being one of many

lalala, lots of funerals... whether its literal or metaphorical funerals is personal opinion, i'd go for metaphorical myself.

'job that makes you sleep' would be a reference to wasting your life, general loathing of dead end jobs.

'frame you put around her face' i think is a reference to thinking someone is flawless and perfect, 'any light that still remains' being whether you see any good in her.

'alarm clock going off... etc', apart from being one of the most moving bits of vocal i know, i think is more a reference to realizing at the end of a relationship what you've lost, rather than real death

love this song SO much...

incidentally, i reckon its hard to analyse this without going autobiographical... rather than spending loads on psychoanalysis, people could just try to decipher conor oberst and see what they come up with...

no, im serious. its like word association but on a higher level...

Bright Eyes – Padraic My Prince Lyrics 22 years ago
i think this song is about how anything you love can be lost if you don't pay attention to it.

babies turn blue when they are ignored like the sky on summer days
before you turn and walk away it has changed you

But exactly what the subject is is objective to the person hearing it. conor writes his songs for himself (i do not read the reviews, no i am not singing for you; Lets not shit ourselves, track 13, Lifted) so you have to find your own meaning in the songs.

i think what he himself was writing about is almost irrelevant since its covered by a thick metaphor, and if you can find a piece of yourslef in there then thats a good thing, but theres no more looking for something else.

as for me, when i look at this song, i see wasted chances lost from a lack of action.

Bright Eyes – Lover I Don't Have to Love Lyrics 22 years ago
Yeah, i have the uk version (cos im british) and they accidentally put the lyrics of waste of paint up twice...

of course, knowing conor (which i don't) he probably did it just to make people look harder.

Bright Eyes – Loose Leaves Lyrics 22 years ago
i got the no beginning... ep before the album, but knew what the album was going to be called, and assumed that the title (lifted _or_ the storys in the soil, keep your ear to the ground) came form the first line of this song and the ending of We Are Free Men, but then when i got the album, about half of the songs mentioned lifted - i think thats his theme of the new album, (just like the theme of the last one was reflection) - things are bad but could get better.

i also haven't seen a mention of keep your ear to the ground in lyrics - although it is close to the line after the story is in the soil, loose leaves cover the ground.

am i just trying to read to much into this now?

(also the ep title can be found in track two of the new album, method acting... im definetely overdoing this now...)

Bright Eyes – Messenger Bird's Song Lyrics 22 years ago
Freefallastronaut:

conor explained in an interview that the last song of fevers and mirrors would have linked the whole story together and explained a lot of things - unfortunately he decided it was too long and dull and took it off every version except the japanese rerlease. its called jetzabel removes the undesirables (or something) you may be able to find the lyrics on these pages (if not try i know for a fact they are on the unofficial bright eyes page which you can fing through the saddle creek website)

try reading that through a couple of times and everything makes a little more sense (a little, anyway)

can i also just say how pointless it is that people are dissing bright eyes and rerpeatedly putting up complaints about "hey man, he's shit" and whinging about someone cheating him into the most viewed pages - well by constantly looking at this page to see if someone else has slagged of your beloved new found glory (i have no idea who they are, im from england, so don't draw me into this), you are merely increasing the number of hits this pages gets - a self defeating plan, especially since most of the people on this page love conor and probnably aren't going to be put of by you're admittedly superbly thought out argument ("hey man, he sounds so depressing and shit, dude")

for those americanss who don't 'get' sarcasm, yes, i was being sarcastic when i described the argument as well thought out. i respect other opinions, and other forms of music - i like everything form indie to punk to metal to hiphop to cheese to blues to jazz to lo-fi - but slagging off someone elses opinion without testing the music first is NOT a real opinion.

my brother loves house music, and when i first played him bright eyes he hated it - but then he came to visit me, and he listened to the album all the way through a couple of tiomes and loved it - if you give it a chance its amazing, the lyrics and emotion overide any preconceptions you may have over your favourite form of music

"two pills just weren't enough, the alarm clocks going off, but you're not waking up, this isn't happening - happening- happening - it is."

now THAT is quality...

conor rules! rob.

sorry, very long post...

Bright Eyes – Something Vague Lyrics 22 years ago
This was the bright eyes song that really pulled me in, i think that listening to it when i was in a very bad emotional place really hit it home to me, i'd just had this girl... anyway, suffice to see i walked the streets all night contemplating the point of it all..., and this was the song that was running through my head the whole time

and it made me cry when i saw him live.
