Belly (US) – Super-connected Lyrics 3 years ago
@[ragnar704:36991] I wonder if "spinning on a dime" refers to some sort of rapid change. Great analysis, btw!

KISS – Dirty Livin' Lyrics 5 years ago
The correct lyric is "Mainline outta China is due in tonight," not "Last night outta China is due in tonight," which also doesn't make any sense. It's a reference to the Kiss song "Mainline" sung by Peter Criss, similar to other Criss-sung song references throughout the song, like "Getaway" and "Waitin' for the darkness to blind the heat, I make my livin' out on the streets" allusion to "Black Diamond."

Damien Rice – The Blower's Daughter Lyrics 8 years ago
I've read through about 14 years' worth of interpretations.

Damien has denied the whole "clarinet teacher's daughter" idea.

The "telemarketer accidentally called a girl who was a student" interpretation seems to have merit.

Anyway, the one line and interpretation I haven't seen elsewhere is the double meaning of "the pupil in denial." Consider this: The following line is the repeated chorus "I can't take my eyes off you."

"Pupil" has a double meaning, in that it both refers to the young girl being a student and that his eyes have been sending him messages that are false and that he refuses to believe but knows he has to accept.

Denial is the first stage of recovery from grief, and as the song progresses, its narrator moves toward acceptance.
