I don't think it's an actual dysfunctional relationship. The fact that they're waiting for something to go wrong makes it seem like it's at least okay so far. If you take away the premonitions of repetition you get "I am waiting for something to go wrong Sometimes it seems that I don't have the skills to recollect The twists and turns of plots that took us from lovers to friends I'm thinking I should take that volume back up off the shelf And crack it's weary spine and read to help remind myself I am waiting for you to flee the scene As if you held in your hand the smoking gun And on the floor lay the one you said you loved. And it seems by the time that I have figured what it's worth The squeaking of our skin against the steel has gotten worse." It reads like someone that ends their relationships through the self fulfilling prophecy that the person will leave them. Another diet fed by crippling defeat = they feed their own negativity into their relationships And I am waiting for that sense of relief = that aspect of feeling like they're right when the person finally (and to them) inevitably leaves them Because of past bad relationships or their general cynicism, even when they know that their partner was their friend even before the relationship, they still think that they'll leave them, and are only just saying that they love them. |

Don't the middle two choruses change to "/so/ you can sharpen your knife" and "/my/ deathless death" It seems pretty clear on the album track at least but idk if the licensor will feel like editing the lyrics. |
