alt-J – Taro Lyrics 6 years ago
Some parts of the lyrics are some of the most beautiful I've heard.

As a lot of people mentioned earlier:
"Do not spray into eyes, I have sprayed you into my eyes"
is a wonderful allegory of both their work and their lives.

First, the warning "do not spray into eyes", meaning "you should not have your eyes opened straight to the danger", which is exactly what war photographers do. Moreover, their job is to take pictures so that people from the world can understand what's happening. Being an interface, giving us a way to "watch the spray" without any danger.

And finally, "I have sprayed you into my eyes" which takes the whole sentence to a poetic level. Bringing love into the party. Meaning that being attached to someone else is both a wonderful feeling and a dangerous one. This second part means to me that by loving her he accepted the risk coming along, especially with their profession. Obviously a perfect allegory that, at the time of his dead, he certainly had a lot of images of her in mind, "in his eyes" metaphorically.

But this is not the only jewel hidden in the song. I personnally really love the:
"him five yards from his leg, From you Taro"
I especially like the abrupt change of perspective.
Before that, the story is told to the third person, and in an abrupt twist, it all comes to the 1st perso. "From you Taro" is spelled upper case, just as it was a sentence by Capa himself. And this is a perfect transition to the following sentence, being told by Capa.

And then : "All colours and cares glaze to grey, shrivelled and stricken to dots" which is another beautiful metaphor of a photograph, especially the war photographs at this time.
From the reality they saw through the lens, to a picture, black & white, shrivelled on paper, the dots representing the grain of the picture.

This song is really a beautiful piece of poetry.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Burning Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree with Andromeda's comment. This song is not "self explanatory".

I talked with a psychologist friend of mine about some stuff and he described exactly what this song is about imho.

He calls it the "Only child syndrom". Lacking brothers & sisters makes you lack references and leans you to "go with the flow" with never knowing whether what you're doing is right or wrong.

I like to think this song is about this state of mind. Everyone in his life meets a lot of people, builds his own life in regard of what people tell him, show him, where people lead him. And one day, you just wake up realizing a lot of people have influenced your life in a way or another.

"So many people telling me one way"
"So many people telling me to stay"
is about these people influencing, not necesserily consciously your life by giving you advises or just being a ideal (model) for you.

"Never had time to have my mind made up" is about this feeling when you wake in your thirties, forties, and looking back at your life with the idea of "Wow, so many time passed, so many things I have done and I don't even know if it was a choice I did consciously or just a model I reproduced unconsciously."

"Caught in a motion that I don't wanna stop" here's the perfect analysis. You've been caught in this motion, going with the flow w/o even thinking about what you're doing in your own way.

Your interpretation is really good indeed.

Something we often forget is the tone, the rythm, the mood of the song when we read the lyrics.

This song is pretty strong. The drums knocking as a puch in your face the whole song increase the feeling of the lyrics. The pace too. From "the mourning was complete" pretty slow, almost peaceful in regard of the ending helps me picture the scene in my mind.

A very long fight in a car four hours (or weeks, he doesn't even know) he feels as bad as if someone (their relationship in fact) died this day.

It's also interesting that the pace increases as he travels back in the past. When the song begins, it's the end of the fight, she leaves, he tries to help her by forcing a smile and waving goodbye. As the son goes on we travel back in their fight and discover how and why it happened "curiosity becomes a heavy load" "stop asking questions". And then the rhythm speeds up and strengthens and you feel buried into their fight.

You almost got it the exact way I feel about this song.

Just one tiny thing about your analysis.

Think about the song and one word that clings in your mind. What is this word you recall when thinking about the song ?
In my mind it's the word "Maybe", and I think the way he sings it is the most important thing in the song and the only tiny little thing missing in your comment.

The emphasis he puts on "Maybe" in regard to the next verse with "And after all" can't be innocent.

The important thing about the way he feels is not that his crush saves him. No, what's the most important is that he THINKS that MAYBE she COULD save him.

Like : "Maybe, maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me from my loneliness and despair, maybe you could bring me joy and we could live together, maybe we could start a real relation and be happy together for the rest of our lives, but what's important after all, is that now, today, at the present time, you're my little wonder wall, my little piece of heaven that makes me feel good and happy. No matter what's next, no matter if it's over in one week, one year or ten years, no matter if you say no today or if we get married one day, the important thing is the way I feel today by singing this song, telling you these words, thinking about you all the time, these little butterflies I have in my stomach when I think about you".

To me, what transpires behind that "Maybe / And after all" is that she already cured him. He's afraid to tell her, because just like you said in your comment, he has strong feelings for her and maybe could hurt her or scare her, but by feeling this way he's already cured from his loneliness and that's what matters.

Just like survivors from a crash or something like that, they often survive by themselves, help themselves survive. The only thing they need to survive is not someone helping them but having hope that someone CAN save them.

Perfect analysis imo.

The situation everyone has lived once in his life : "Ask anyone they'll tell you that". This endless face to face ending to a break-up. Both of you fight, cry, feel guilty. The last seconds, minutes, hours of the relationship : "The beginning of the end", always painful to live especially when you know it's unavoidable and maybe better for both of you.
The rythm / pace of the song fits the lyrics perfectly. Slow when she walked away from the car, as it always looks to your eyes as a slow motion movie, when you hope she's gonna turn back and change her mind. Violent and "angry" at the end when he thinks back at what she said and what have prefered she told him "fuck off" and break like that.
