Hey Lokicannon... we should totally get together for some pre-marital, same-gender, lubricated, under-aged, prostituted, blood-ritual, anal sex sometime.

Lol. Thanks, I feel better now, Loki.

I hate when I get reeled in like that and I start typing all fast. My poor poor keyboard can't take much more of this. Guh.

I'm gonna go have a smoke and take the lords name in vain a few times. That always cheers up us atheists.

Holy shit, dude. I'm not generalizing about anything except for human nature! POWER CORRUPTS PEOPLE.

I'm not generalizing about Christians as individuals. Almost my whole family is Christian and they're all very intellegent, wonderful, understanding people who accept me for who I am, regardless of my beliefs.

YOU are getting insanely defensive. You're also confusing when I say "The Church," I'm not talking about the actual building, or wherever you go to on Sundays. I'm talking about religion as an organization to control a populous.

Man, you are dense.

Again, I'm not prejudiced against Christians. I have absolutely NO problem with Christians or any religion. I don't share their believes, but there's nothing wrong with that: it's everyone's right to believe what they want to believe. I just BELIEVE that when you organize religion to the point where few/one has power over many, it plants the seed for corruption. History has proven this to be true.

I never said anything about Christians one way or the other. I was referring to the church, which I know from personal experience is corrupt. Yes, I'm an atheist who was raised in a Christian household until I grew up and started thinking for myself. You say you're an independant thinker, but you look down on me because I do the same thing? Believe what you want, Christianity (and all religion for that matter) is not a bad thing. It's the church that is totally messed up.

Well, let me clarify. "biting the priests hand," is obviously not literally correct. But it's striking back at those that try to control and manipulate you (prime example is the church.)

Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire – Vidalia Lyrics 12 years ago
The lyrics are totally wrong up here... but anyway. This song means, quite simply, "too much of a good thing, is no longer a good thing." There it is.

Here are the correct lyrics (as I hear them, anyway.)

There was a time when I enjoyed vidalia
there was no other fruit I dared my lips to touch
my grandad he prescribed vidalia
"for whatever ails ya" - heart disease, the grippe and such

But to yourself this medicine you'll properly expose
the benefits of health, wealth, and respect
Eat it like an apple of a deep-colored rose
sweet victory will be yours to delect

But how my palate grew tired
so sweet, so sweet, so sweet
no thanks I'll take defeat

I remember a dark and smoky den
Cheeks of roast beef bloody rare
Oh, whiskey-aged faces of barrel-chested men
And I'm feelin' small, weak and scared

I remember that nook, the way I shook
pain hurts innocence be damned
red with shame and red with pain
we all sit down to eat our leg of lamb
our leg of lamb...
we all sit down to eat our leg of lamb

The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics 12 years ago
OK - just going to interject here!

WHY IS EVERYONE SO PREOCCUPIED WITH WHETHER THE CHARACTERS ARE MALE OR FEMALE??

THAT
IS
NOT
THE
POINT
OF
THE
SONG.

Alright - yes, the song is obviously about two youths (My first impression was that they were male, but again, it really doesnt matter,) who run away from home and learn how to live on the streets by turning tricks (aka prostitution.)

However, that's just the surface.

There are more subtle points to this song - such lovely things. Like how the two have a bond between them... They're in it together, there is love there (whether that goes onto romantic/sexual love DOESNT MATTER EITHER.) It's the partnership, the companion ship - they are all eachother has in the entire world! "...we huddled close... in the bus stop enclosure enfolding.... our hands tightly holding..."
That's the most important part of the song. The two of them turn tricks and do whatever they can to survive.. then at that moment they realize that all they really have is eachother. It's beautiful.

The song is nonsense. They just randomly strung words together to sound deep - but obviously, whoever this artist is, they know they're audience is just barely above illiterate. (See comments above.) If you don't know what stupefied means, anything will sound deep and profound.

I disagree. It was done right the first time - it shouldn't be tampered with. Here's the thing wrong with MOST covers, one of two things happen:
1. The song sounds EXACTLY the same as the original, in which case, there was no point to covering it.
2. The idiots covering tries to make the song their own, and FAILS, in which case, they've ruined the song that they love so much.

Either way, it usually ends in disappointment. It's impossible not to compare a cover to an original.

In my opinion, then only good covers ever of PF were Les Claypools - I'm pretty sure he did the entire ANIMALS album - and it was awesome. He was loyal, but just put his own spin on it (and as you know, a Les Claypool Spin is just longer, more embellished bass solos. And what's wrong with that? He's Les Claypool and he can do what he wants.)

Anyway, my point is... shit... I don't know, I got off track there for a second.

This is a great song. I heard it before I actually saw the movie - so I didn't know what it was about - and as I'm watching the movie, I'm like "holy crap." Seriously, you guys.

ANYWAY - If you like this song, and haven't seen the movie yet, I can tell you this: this song is the only thing that makes the movie interesting... to find all the lyrics, I mean.

The movie SUFFOCATES YOU WITH BOREDOM.
Sure, it was "brilliant" for it's time, but it's dated and tired now. Stop calling it a great movie, because it's not. It's trully not.

This song and this band, however, hell yes.

The White Stripes – I Can Learn Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm going to break this one down. This song is extremely complex.
Now, this is just my opinion, as with all songs, whoever is listening and whatever they're feeling at the time is what gives the song meaning.

"I wish we were stuck up a tree... then we'd know that it's nicer below."
--- The character is wishing that they had a different frame of reference. Kind of a "grass is always greener" thing. This opening line is so loaded and sets the tone for the rest of the song. In a nutshell, the character is feeling sorry for himself and wishes he could simply appreciates what he had instead of the discontent that is consuming him. The relationship HAS ENDED, and ended badly, and he's longing for the days when things were simpler and happy.

"Don't know any lullabies, I don't know how to make you mine, but I can learn..."
---- He's not sure how to make everything ok again. He doesn't know what his former lover wants, or what he can do to keep her, but he's willing to work at it, if given the chance.

"Drive you home, and then wait by the phone. For that call, for a walk in the fall..."
---- He's reminicing at this point. How everything was new, butterflies in the stomach, but these are mixed with feelings of loneliness... treasuring every moment they had together and aching for eachother when they were apart.

"No harm will come of this, one little midnight kiss... it will not burn..."
--- Remember how I said whoever is listening and what they're feeling is what gives the song meaning? Well, this is where it gets personal. I dated a guy for 4 years, at one point, we broke up, but it was awful for both of us. We knew it wasnt working, but we couldn't help second-guessing ourselves. We wanted eachother so badly. One night, we got together to catch up, and I drove him home. We sat there for a while in the car and talked... one thing led to another, tears were shed, and we ended up kissing. I remember it being the most painful experience of my life. I loved him then, but he was all wrong for me. The kiss was out of pain, not of love. This line is rationalizing that kind of indulgence. It still makes my heart hurt so many years later.

"Too many lonely days, I feel like a throw away. Well now it's my turn,"
When you've rejected a lover, or have been rejected by one, you want so badly to move forward and get on with your life. This is the turning point in the song where the character realizes that he's probably better off... even though it still hurts so bad.

"Falling down is no longer around, Feeling sun... alone on the run. Well isn't this fun?"
Falling down = falling in love. Feeling sun, alone on the run = he's finally turning around and reaching the point where he's ok with being alone. HOWEVER, you have this sarcastic ending of: "Well isn't this fun?" wherein we see that the character resents being alone.

This song means so much to me personally - and while I admit I have a biased opinion about it's meaning, I'm pretty sure I'm at least close. The lyrics (as with most of J. White's songs) are extremely complex and filled with imagery and deep emotion... so who really knows what he thinks it's about. But who cares? Why does it matter? It's different for everyone.

Man Man – Engrish Bwudd Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is about the oddessy of a man who eventually falls in love - the father of the woman hates him. It's assumeable that he's English - and the woman and father are French. It has nothing to do with anyone of Asian decent - back in the day, if something was foreign, it was dubbed "Turkish" or "Oriental." That's just the way it was, because the demand was high for imports from those countries. It's a time peice - it's just a fun little story.

Obviously the Chorus is from Jack and the Beanstalk, "I smell the blood of an Englishman. May he be alive or dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread." Who knows why the father hated him so much - perhaps just because he was foreign, or nomadic. But he hated him with a passion, enough to kill him.

I love how playful the song is. It's very unique for Man Man in a lot of respects.

Man Man – I, Manface Lyrics 12 years ago
This song couldnt be any sexier, any darker. I am just absolutely in love with it.
I love the female back vocals of the chorus. I don't think it's about a werewolf. I think that's a bit too literal. The werewolf imagry is (in my opinion) used as a metaphore to illustrate both the duality of man (righteousness vs. indulgence) and the animalistic way we act upon our urges toward the opposite sex. I love the theme of self-hatred.... ("your father warned you about temptation, and all the wicked women that it breeds, when you met her you knew life was over, her damnation is what your body needs") this man grew up as many people did - with the lie that sex was something evil. He's turning into a beast over the lust for a woman, and is willing to go to hell for it. He hates himself, but he can't help himself..... he will have her.... so sexy.

Man Man – Feathers Lyrics 12 years ago
It's not about a suicide, per se. It's more like, she doesnt know who she is anymore. The "stranger" that came "in the night," is what she's become. She opened her eyes one day and didn't know who she was or how she got there.

It could also be about betrayal. Someone broke her... not her heart (it's not a sappy love song...) but broke her spirit. Changed who she was. Someone she didnt like. To the point where it's hard to see the purpose of living.

.... At least that's what it means to me when I listen to it. With the exception of maybe "I, Manface" this is probably my favorite Man Man song. It's so simple and rythmic and dark. I just LOVE it.
