The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics 12 years ago
For me it means exactly what Richard Ashcroft says before he performs it in concert. Life is like a symphony, but bittersweet in that you have rules and regulations imposed on it and that people are just governed by money and will only be as successful as the amount of it they have. As the man wrote the song, I will go along with his assessment.

you're wrong actually. Andrew Oldham's version was an orchestral adaptation of the Stones song "The Last Time." In fact, when you listen to the Stones version AND Bittersweet Symphony they sound very similar in how they are sung. Any linear notes you look at give songwriting credits of Bittersweet Symphony to Jagger and Richards. It's because they wrote The Last Time. Andrew Oldham's Orchestra basically just covered it.

Allen Klein, who holds a majority of the Stones Catalog (much like Michael Jackson had the Beatles catalog), basically gave the Verve permission to use the orchestral loop in the song. But when he heard the manner in which it was sung he believed that the Verve used more than he agreed to allow them to use. The Rolling Stones were icons, the Verve were a young band known to be drug users. What did anyone think the Judge in that case was going to rule : )

If you listen to the Rolling Stones studio recording of "The Last Time" it does sound very similar in how Bittersweet Symphony was sung. Just listen : "Told you once, I told you twice" then listen to "Well it's a Bittersweet Symphony, this life." You'll hear how similar the songs are and will understand why Allen Klein sued. Why it was shameful is that Allen Klein did not sue until AFTER the song became a mega-hit worldwide, despite having granted prior permission and knowing full well how they were borrowing from the Stones.
