Niki & The Dove – Tomorrow Lyrics 12 years ago
The pearl merchant refers to a parable Jesus told his disciples about a pearl merchant who sold everything he owned to obtain the pearl of great price. In that story, Jesus means that his followers should stake everything on the worth of God's kingdom. In Niki's religion, she will stake everything on her lover.

Arcade Fire – Rococo Lyrics 12 years ago
The word Rococo refers to an art movement of the 1700s when the aristocracy began to gain power in Europe. The idle rich put their money and power into works of art that portrayed other idle rich people. Rococo art has been criticized for being frivolous and unserious. Search Fragonard's "The Swing" for an example. I think by making a comparison between the poor taste of today's upper middle class teens and the overly pampered kids of 1712.

Arcade Fire – Deep Blue Lyrics 13 years ago
I heard the song as just a generic "la la la la." This is the third time int he album they refer to living in the shadow of a song. My take is that the la la la represents music that is catchy but has no deeper meaning. Or possibly it represents how artistically we try to equal or surpass those who came before us and escape from their shadow but we never quite do.

On another note, I think it's interesting how yet again on the album, they claim that they can "begin" and yet they never quite do. Instead there's a constant waiting until it ends and then they start waiting again.

Arcade Fire – Wasted Hours Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it has a note of acceptance in it. The whole album is about how they're gonna "Start" but in the end it turns into kind of a hymn to the pleasure of waiting. Even though waiting has it's drawbacks it's not the end of the world. There are still some positives. It's a life we can live.
