Red Hot Chili Peppers – Monarchy of Roses Lyrics 12 years ago
Yeah - that's Pettibon. I think the reference refers to his violent, anti-authoritarian comic work (calicoes referes to colorfulness). Religion definitely brought good to the world, but it also spawned depictions of chaos and violence. The song expresses the darker consequences of religion, and possibly the negativity going on behind the scenes. As for the name Sherry, I'm torn between it referring simply to alcohol's effect on religion or some sort of vague reference to the Spanish Inquisition. Sherry is also a name of Hebrew roots - though my guess is that wasn't the reason for choosing it. Mary could refer to pureness and goodness, whereas Sherry could refer to debauchery and wildness.

This pretty little ditty is about rebirth and getting second chances in life.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Did I Let You Know Lyrics 12 years ago
This might be my favorite song on the album! It definitely seems like it's about a guy dancing with his girl and realizing just how clearly and madly in love with her he is.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie Lyrics 12 years ago
These are all very deep meanings. However, in my opinion, it's hard to argue against this song simply being about an aged rockstar having a 3-some with younger groupies, and one of the groupies helping the rockstar bring the other to orgasm. This old rockstar can still be a rockstar!

To me, if this song was really about the evolution of the Peppers, it would be a little more obvious and not deeply embedded between the lines of a song about sex. I also read that this song wasn't intended by the band to be released as a single, so why would they write it to be that?

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Goodbye Hooray Lyrics 12 years ago
I definitely agree with D7K, but I would add that it's the nice guy making fun of the "bad boys" trying too hard to be bad boys. The nice guy knows in the end he'll be on top.

My other theory is that it's a guy whose girl left him, and now he's showing her that he really doesn't need her.

To me it very obviously is about the Holy Rosary of Catholicism! Every lyric in this song (including the names)supports this theory. It also isn't the first time the Peppers touch on religion...(think Shallow Be Thy Game, Wet Sand, etc.)

Red Hot Chili Peppers – This Velvet Glove Lyrics 13 years ago
Continuing my last post...

The title probably references the graphic novel "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron" by Daniels Clowes. The trippy story about the protagonist finding himself living a life of debauchery and realizing that his true love is what he needs totally matches up with the theme of this song.

Not sure if a connection can be made with this, but Velvet Glove was also a name given to a Canadian style air missile. I'm leaning much more toward the graphic novel, though.

Beastie Boys – Shadrach Lyrics 13 years ago
Let's face it...the Beastie Boys were not the typical hip hop artists - and I don't mean just because they're white (ahem Vanilla Ice). They were party guys. They still are. They experimented with production, and they didn't give a flying f*ck what corporate said about they're music. They were rebel rappers by style, personality, and music. That's exactly what this song is about. They did their thing, despite what King Nebukadnezar (hip hop corporate) tried to force them to do. They are the Shadrach, Mesach, and Abednago of hip hop. Sick song, sick meaning...gotta love the Beasties!

And they said the Sh'ma!

Red Hot Chili Peppers – This Velvet Glove Lyrics 13 years ago
This song, to me, seems to be about someone who has realized they've hit rock bottom (probably with regard to drugs) and that love and spirituality are what they want and need to rehabilitate themselves. It's tough to tell if the individual falls in love with some sort of god or a woman/man, but that might be irrelevant. I see here a person accepting their devastating addiction and realizing they need saving.
