i love the song from first time i heard it in london!!!it reminds me to my life there!...finally a woman who speaks out modern day issues in people's language, ...visas in my name, clocking that game, ... does pirate skulls and bones stand for an immigrant mafia or just in general? women power!! 3rd world democracy!!now! its not like some posters said a woman trying to sound like gangster, ...she's making fun of the system and state of being, and talks in same time of normal daily survival (especially for immigrant young ones, political people, worker's, ...): it's very realistic! and in same time very positive and cheerful! being cheerful in a song doesnt mean it has to deal with light issues only! mia is immigrant from political background, educated, designer, involved in human rights, ... nowadays .. youre confronted with all these issues anyway, you dont have to be a gangster! especially if you try to be independent, to grasp whats going on, and have social responsiblity, ... and live true to yourself. just open your eyes! |

the term karma police- i think its about that nowadays police operate like a karma police, especially once youve been caught, u have to think with them all the time, you have to act morally ok, but this puts u in constraints again, also having to think with the police makes u go crazy and lonely, its like a viscious circle, then u tend to make mistakes again, ... till u get a chance to get rid of them, discuss it, etc. .... to become like a buddha or go the path of liberation in general we have to make ourselves free from karma, actio and reactio, try to break the wheel, or minimize it, have as much self determination as possible, ... not make people or characters our problem, but the system, capitalism, ... nowadays the police does not come after young ones, activists, rebels, because of some minor "crimes", but sort of observes their "karma" longterm, ...so its that it becomes more difficult to blame them, ... its part of a global change towards psychological warfare. mind games. |

You can tell from the lines on her face/You can see that she\'s been there/Probably been moved on from every place/\'Cos she didn\'t fit in there" ... what do others think means "shes been there"? shes seen paradise, or does it mean she was put away by the police, cause she didnt fit in./ she's seen the difficulties of hard life. + a day for u and me in paradise... i think it means in the same time critisizing materialistic capitalist (western) people around her, going shopping, running to their jobs, running careless after futile life, ... or being homeless me and her, as the singer sympathizes with her, we are still in paradise, as the poor are blessed, a sort of anticapitalist paradise of the ones who tried hard not to fall into dependencies f.e. from abusive men, who were harassed by family, who police caused them troubles, or f.e. foreigners, fleeing from war, etc.... a very nice song i used to love as a child! |

its interesting how there are many meanings packed together: her boyfriend (turned 30, arrested nude on beach), detachment to material world, keeping the inner child, not trusting people over 30. some people suggested its also bout a retarded or autist boy (foam from his tongue, the old men called him insane, ...). but i dont think jefferson airplane would finger point retarded or socalled mentally ill....but rather mean the innocent, hippie way of life, ...which the old may call insane, but lather's a hero to the youth. some others suggested its contra vietnam war, (seargant ...commanding his tank, trashing air with his hand>>helicopter sound, ...), and about a veteran, which is also possible. its also bout drugs (snorting the best licks in town). then: why is the seargant called dow jones-like the stock index>is she making fun?(anticapitalist) another thing i noticed, since my mother tongue is not english, and its the first time i looked up the lyrics, after knowing the song for so many years, ... grace has a way to prolong and intonate the words, that i used to get the song a bit different (....may this be intended her being on drugs???)...like its a mind expansion when people can play with language, so you hear 2 meanings, ... i dont know if this is the case here, but would anyone agree?: 1- i always heard 13 instead of 30 due to the intonation (would make more sense) 2- leather chair (sounds like lather) 3- mountains that look like bumps (i heard bombs> reference to the war, atomic bomb) also i had this interpretation of his mother being very dominant, psychopathic (sending newspaper clippings, .... i always associated with the letters psychos write(like for ransome, etc.))- reminding me of my mother. i always thought of myself when i heard this song. a very delicate, freedomloving, fine, artistic soul this lather had, he didnt want to get messed up... in the last part of the song lather talks to grace as if shes the mother now, (is it true that im no longer young-"mommy?" from the off, i should have let him go, ...). but they want to spoil him, maybe some people even want to get him locked up. the line he hardly knows what game to play, which words to say... refers to the corrupted games of society, where you have to play a role, and say things right, etc.... its a song against establishment definetly. |

i would also say that song was written for me and all other women out there knowing the truth and struggling. the song as often songs can have more than one interpretation level, which is also intended, because its difficult to talk bout it openly...i would say this song is about knowledge of the game of life, of the lies, the corruption of politics, the state, also the game of men against women. will they let her grow old to bring about the truth, or will her enemies try to put her down, maybe even to kill her,... will she be able to escape? its about a wise woman who has knowledge,(of earth, past, ...) wants to live in harmony, peace, etc....it's about a young one thats been set up in a conspiracy. knowing can also make very lonely. its a message to all women struggling because they know too much bout that political game, they've been hurt and tried to put down because of that....
