Phish – Joy Lyrics 13 years ago
I sort of agree with tedellis2. I think that trey's sister may have been inspiration for the name of the song; but judging by the lyrics the song is definately not about someone who has died. I think that the song deals with the concept of isolation. There are 3 other songs in history where we can find a similar message:

Widespread Panic-Climb to Safety
Beatles-Dear Prudence
Pink Floyd-Hey You

This song "Joy" like the other three above is about someone who is suffering from a depression of some sort and has isolated herself from society. The Floyd song "Hey You" is especially relevant. In the story of the wall, the main character Pink, lives in isolation and suffers from insurmountable misery because he has become a brick the the builders(the machine, society) rejected. A social misfit. He feels all alone.

The character in this song "Joy" is likewise in a similar position. But rather than a wall as a symbol or metaphor for seperation, this song uses a puzzle.

"All of the places and people belong to the puzzle
but one of the pieces is gone.
And its YOU..."

"We want you to be happy
don't live inside the gloom
We want you to be happy
come step outside your room."

This song, just like the 3 above, is a calling out to the character that you won't experiencing happiness by severing every personal relationship(brick or puzzle piece). It's a warning to the character that happiness is only real when shared.

Pink Floyd – Welcome to the Machine Lyrics 13 years ago
YES! That is exactly what the song is trying to suggest. This is the only comment I've seen so far that puts the song into perspective based on the grand scheme of things. everyone is right about the music industry part. But thats only because the album is a story and the characters particular battle with the machine involves the music industry. But as all stories do, this one has an overall concept that it is trying to teach about life. That we're slaves to money, conformity and routine living. And we're all just a part of the machine and there's nothing we can really do about. Unless you decide to become a degenerate and disenfranchise the machine all together.

Led Zeppelin – Tangerine Lyrics 13 years ago
Funny you mention that. I've always thought that Sean Lennon's song "Parachute" would be a perfect song for that movie. This song would suffice as well though.

Dire Straits – So Far Away Lyrics 13 years ago
Perhaps the long distance is starting to make his imagination get to him? Or not? Drowning in tears, maybe he is starting to feel that all this time that he has been faithful to her and feeling all alone he is beggining to think that maybe she hasn't. That while he is secluded and constantly thinking about her, maybe she is out there living her life, embracing other people, and not even thinking twice about him. Thus, he feels like a fool.

"I get so tired when I have to explain
When you're so far away from me
See you've been in the sun and I've been in the rain"

But she's just so far he'll never know.

"So far I just can't see."
