I think that "we went out in flames" in speaking about our old sinful nature alludes to God burning away our old nature leaving us pure in Him, "for our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29). "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
