Tom Petty – The Best Of Everything Lyrics 13 years ago
First comment?

Everyone is missing out on a great song.

Yeah and it's over before you know it
It all goes by so fast
Yeah the bad nights take forever
And the good nights don't ever seem to last
And man, we never had the real thing
But sometimes we used to kiss
Back when we didn't understand
What we were caught up in

Some of Toms best lyrics IMO

I may be the only one with this view of the song, but I think it is about abortion. (I may be totally wrong, but this is just my interpretation.)

In an interview I saw from the early 90's, Eddie was talking about the album 10 and all the different song meanings. He said there was a song about an abused child (jeremy), homeless (evenflow), and abortion. I've wondered which song was about abortion and I believe it is this song although it is not perfectly clear.

I think the song is from the viewpoint of a man in a relationship with a women. She becomes pregnant and they decide not to have the baby. Once they have the abortion, their relationship is changed completely. She is not the same.

"She don't wander in here...don't wander in here...

The direction of the eye, so misleading
The defection of the soul, nauseously quick
I don't question, our existence
I just question, our modern needs"

She doesnt look at him the same, "the direction of the eye." she doesnt wander in here meaning she is not in his heart like she once was.

"After all is done, and we're still alone
I won't be taken, yet I'll go...with my hands bound
I will walk...with my face blood
I will walk...with my shadow flag
Into your garden, garden of stone"

After all is done, meaning the abortion is done and they are back to where they were before, except now they feel more alone. Walking with his hands bound, and his face blood, and his shadow flag, meaning he has to live with his decision to have an abortion and the effect it has had on his relationship.

And, lastly I think "into your garden." is a reference to her whom.

This is just I have interpreted this song after listening to it countless times. Not saying I'm right, its just how I hear it.

An argument against my view is that Eddie is very liberal and pro abortion. So my view sounds a little anti-abortion.
