Actually Justin wasn't friends with Heath. But its kind of about Heath and his death. Heres a excerpt about the song:
The first thing I worked on, the riff and the beginning melodies, was the first song on the record, 'Perth,'" Vernon says. "That was back in early 2008. The reason I called it that right away, is because I was with a guy that I didn't know very well, but basically, it's a long story, but in the three days we were supposed to spend together – he's a music video maker – in those three days, his best friend [Heath Ledger] died. And his best friend was from Perth. It just sort of became the beginning of the record. And Perth has such a feeling of isolation, and also it rhymes with birth, and every song I ended up making after that just sort of drifted towards that theme, tying themselves to places and trying to explain what places are and what places aren't. |

Reading earlier comments about the video. Its never implied that the guy shes waiting for in the video is a boy she likes. Its left ambiguously. He could be a friend or a brother. So really depends how the viewer sees it if its romantic or not. I liked the video because you were always so sure she was waiting for her boyfriend but they hug rather than kiss in the end.
I always thought the song was reflecting on a relationship and realizing she should of come clean about why the relationship ended. |

Well from the music video I always got the impression that her boyfriends never listens to her, but she realizes that he does he just doesn't do anything about it. Notice how at the chorus, time always stops, but the last time she realizes his clock is ticking and actually he was listening the whole time just pretending like he didn't care.
She then realizes that he just doesn't care about her. Despite everything she does for him. |
