Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
I also have given this song a lot of thought.

I interpreted the first verse of the song exactly as the lyrics describe. He is a young boy waiting for the 'daily races' or the bus to take him to school. He looks around and sees other children and perhaps some adults waiting to catch taxis or rides to work. They all look worn out and have 'no expressions' because they all follow the same daily routine. He sees the unemotional expressions of those around him and already feels the sorrow of repetitive life and wants to 'drown his sorrows' wanting to die young, therefore 'no tomorrow, no tomorrow.'

The next verse describes his wanting to tell his parents of his desire to die and his realization of how boring and aimless life is. He realizes that people are just running around in circles never going anywhere and wants to share his thoughts with others but does not want to disappoint them or ruin the meaning of life for them thus concluding the idea of a 'mad world.'

The following verse reflects upon a moment in his life where he feels true satisfaction and happiness, 'feeling the way that every child should' on one of his earlier birthdays. But reveals that the only thing is truly searching for is someone to 'sit and listen, sit and listen' and hear what he has to say. He describes going to school and facing the fear of rejection, another one of life's challenges. He hopes to tell his teacher of his thoughts of dying and tries to do so but she ultimately rejects him also by saying 'look right through me, look right through me.'

The last lines of the song is projected at the listener of the song, who is ultimately the only person to listen to what he has to say. He tells the listener to 'enlarge your world' meaning look beyond what you see in front of you and realize that there is no meaning to life.

i completely agree with 'loversdreamersandme' i think he intended it to have two interpretations in which one is a neglected childhood feeling of nostalgia and the other a smoking technique.
