...and BTW, the name Crazy Horse that Neil Young used for the band name was not about a crazy horse. It was the name of the Indian chief of the Oglala Lakota Indians, Chief Crazy Horse, who among other things, led the Lakota people against Custer at Little Bighorn June, 1876. |

Down by the river is not about a horse, not about drugs, not about sex. Its about a jilted lover in Canada who caught his girlfriend with another man, could not live without her, met her down by the river and shot her. It moved Neil Young because of the depth of this guys torment. It was recorded on his 1969 album Crazy Horse, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and wrote this song and Cowgirl in the Sand almost simultaneously. |
