I think it's about finding a better way to tell someone just how passionate you are about them. Not just that you love them, but that you want nothing more than to be with them, to hold them, for the world to shrink down just to you and your special someone. It's more than just "I love you"; it's passion. It's wanting to, well, forget the world and be with them. When you're crazy in love with someone, just being with them makes you happy, and you want to make them happy. I don't think it's a breakup song at all. I think it's a song about passionate love. |

Though this song sounds whimsical and reverent, further research has proven it is anything but. This song is, in fact, about Doctor Who, specifically the Weeping Angels. Of course, there are some hopeful lines, but not many. "Wake me if you're out there!" A constant plea for the Doctor to come and save him from the clutches of the Angels. "Through the glass in my bedroom window In the bushes far below I thought I saw an unfamiliar shadow Among the ones I so clearly know." Since the Angel was concealed by the darkness, it was free to move, then froze as the singer, obviously terrified, noticed the movement. "I've been sleeping with the nightlight unplugged With a note on the rocking chair That says I'm dreaming of the life I once loved So wake me if you're out there." The angels grow stronger by feeding on energy so he's taking away that source of energy, while again pleading that somehow the Doctor can come and save him. "Living close to the ground Is seventh heaven cause there are angels all around." This line is sarcastic and ironic, basically calling this horror of existence wonderful. "Among my frivolous thoughts I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts So wake me if you're out there!" A reference to the Doctor again, daydreaming about a world away from his home. He probably wishes he could travel with the Doctor. "In the dust on my cellar staircase A pair of footprints followed me I saw a flicker in the fake fireplace Blinked again but there was nothing to see." More about how the angels plague him. "I've been leaving all the windows unlocked With a basket by the oak tree Cause I'll be picking up the acorns that fall off If you'll be climbing up to meet me." Now the singer busies himself by preparing for when the Doctor comes, setting up a way to see if the TARDIS disturbed anything outside. "I keep my knees black and blue cause they often hit the hardwood floor And I believe so I'm not praying to the ceiling anymore." Even though he's quickly losing faith, he still hopes and dreams that somehow the Doctor can hear his pleas for help. "The indications reveal That few of us realize life is quite surreal." Nobody really believes in the Doctor but him, and most people think he's crazy for all his precautions against the Weeping Angels. "So if you're dying to see, I guarantee there are angels around your vicinity." Now he asks them to just notice the abundance of angel statues, pointing out that there's something wrong with them. Congratz if you made it all the way down here! I commend you for your ability to learn the dark truth behind this beautiful song. |

This makes me think of my late great-grandmother...she had Alzheimer's disease. I was too young to really understand at the time...but because of recent events I can now shed the tears she deserves. The lyrics where there seems to be dialogue remind me of the times when she was particularly lost in a memory, talking to people that weren't there. She used to tell us about her high school dances...when she first had my grandmother...her first day of freshman year... I wonder if she ever remembered her husband. I never knew him. |

As we all know, Adam is very introverted. I think that this song is a reflection of that. It’s also written for any of his fans to relate to easily. “Well I’ve been huddled up alone By the fire even though I’m not exactly feeling cold” The song opens on Adam sitting by the fire, deep in reflection on himself, not because he needs physical warmth, but rather something in his life just feels missing. “And I’ve been bundled up for days Too confused to be amazed At all the icy water in my veins” Here, this represents all the internal turmoil. He’s living in a world full of extroverts, and it confuses him so much that he’s not shocked at how cold he can be to people. “Why do I feel so alone?” Why doesn’t he fit in? “Yeah I’ve been moving in and out Of this old split-level house And I’d just as soon burn the whole place down” Now it’s getting personal for him. This is his “past life”, back when he worked at a Coke factory and lived a dull life. He hated that job so much, he’s said it himself. “‘Cause I quit working lumberyards To build a mansion out of cards But I feel thin behind these paper walls” He quit his old job for a life making music, but something feels missing. For Adam, it’s his music. These are the “paper tigers”. Interestingly enough, a paper tiger is a metaphor for something that appears tough on the outside but is actually quite weak. Maybe he feels like the songs are a way to communicate with the world, but they aren’t exactly representing him anymore. “‘Cause come tomorrow afternoon I’ll fill a helium balloon And set them free into the baby blue sky So they won’t have to be alone” The helium balloon is how he shares his music with the world. Adam has always felt that music is something to be shared, and it shouldn’t be kept to just one person. “But when I close these heavy lids after dark Each sweet dream is a target And all my shots are so consistently wide of the mark” Again, he feels like this life he has among extroverts just isn’t quite what he had hoped for. | How does this not have any comments? Oh, well, this is my new favorite song. It's a song that perfectly describes that feeling when you're trying to get away from a broken heart, but you just can't. Almost everyone can identify with it somehow, and the lyrics have that special touch to them that marks Owl City. The music, it's so perfect. I love the curtain sound effects in the beginning and end, and the way the simple piano slowly progresses into a full arrangement, yet still manages to remain quiet, is genius. No, I'm not a Christian, in fact I'm an atheist, but yes, Adam is an extremely talented man. Whether or not his fans can agree on if that gift was given or natural is besides the point. His music has changed me at a crucial point in my life. I'll never stop loving Vanilla Twilight, or Plant Life, or I'll Meet You There. His deeper songs carry me away into another world I can take refuge in and escape the dark, bitter world too many of us are stuck in today. His quirky songs like Dental Care and Rugs From Me to You bring a smile to my face and brighten up my day. We can only hope, or pray if you're like that, that some of Adam's old style snuck in to The Midsummer Station. These are mad times we live in, and I've been scared of my light going out like so many worn-out lightning bugs. I will check those songs out, thank you. |

@BringOntheMusic2012 Nobody ever has really had the ability to truly turn the other cheek, except for a few rare ones. You didn't, and I'm certainly not. But my parents tell me to do that ALL THE TIME. It's simply not part of our nature, especially with teens. I recently read an article on the teen brain, and basically it said this is the stage where the child brain becomes more developed and mature. Also, it said that our brains crave adrenaline.
